I think a strand of clear Christmas lights, hung over/around/near your bed would really add to the feel of the room....

I agree with using the tiny clear light strands, especially wrapped in gauze or some other sheer fabric. You could drape this over the head of your bed with ribbon attached to a nail in the wall.

For a bedroom I like the idea of doing an "ethereal style girly decor" altho you could also go in a "woodland fairy theme direction." Search the pics for whatever appeals. Dollar stores are great places to source products with which to create decor. Tissue paper can be made into wreaths or garlands and there are inexpensive crystals which can be used in many ways.

For more ideas and possible products have a look at "saveoncrafts." This link to their various crystal trees might inspire. You could easily make a small tree with dry branches painted white and hung with crystals or small lights. Support it in an urn or container with florist foam.

I've never done a fairy theme indoors altho did make a fairy garden outdoors.

I love your concept! When I was a teen, I would have loved a faerie themed room. (Who am I kidding? I would probably enjoy one today as well.)

I also was thinking string lights would add to the vibe/ambiance, though I was thinking maybe dragonfly light strings.

I love this purple bedding from Anthropologie. Though it's only available in a twin now and the price isn't fantastic.

West Elm has several pintuck duvet covers.

You could even use some sheer white fabric to make a bed canopy suspended from the ceiling.

Woodsy, ethereal decor would help add to the vibe too.

I would also suggest putting some plants in your rooms. Blooming plants that have a woods-y, enchanted feel.

For art, you could either paint or have a friend paint some faerie or woods scenes. Or find some faerie posters or art to have framed. Or for a less expansive option, maybe you could color scan and print art from story books to hang on your wall.

I love the idea too.. and immediately thought of the dragonfly lights! I'd definitely bring in the twinkle!

Loved all of prickly's suggestions -- especially that rich, gorgeous anthropologie purple bedding! You may want to try Urban Outfitters too-- or check out ebay. Sometimes people sell things that didnt work out for them at much cheaper prices.

I think I'd try to DIY the mirror.. I am picturing something that might be ornate (bordering on gawdy) in wood or metal-- but then paint it a deep, dark mysterious purple.

Also agree on bringing in plants-- and while you don't want girly, I'd bring in some unexpected sparkle. A mirrored table or mercury glass lamps.

I'd haunt the clearance sections at Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and even WestElm for some fun and quirky accents.

For color scheme inspiration, I would look at fantasy book covers aimed at young adults (just Google under images). Some of my favorites are Melissa Marr, Holly Black, Gail Carson Levine, Diana Wynne Jones, and Herbie Brennan (and the books are great too). A few where I liked the covers but haven't read the books are Wondrous Strange by Lesley Livingston and I Was a Teenage Fairy by Francesca Lia Block.

Fantasy is my all-time favorite genre, so I loooooove the idea of a moody, nighttime faerie themed room. If it were just to suit myself, I would have the dark blue ceiling have a splash of purple in it (like a sunset), and then have a deep purple on the walls that leaned blue. That way, any royal purples, blues and greens would blend in well, but still have their own character. Please note that the aubergine and eggplant purples that are popular right now are much more muted than book cover colors, so to a certain extent, you will have to decide how strong/clean you want the colors in your room to be vs muted/dirty. Personally, when I'm going deep, dark colors on walls, I like them to have more kick so the place doesn't just look dark. My bedroom right now is a red that's been blackened just enough so that I don't get a headache, but my mum can't take it for more than a few minutes. It all depends on your lighting and personal color tolerances.

Also, keep in mind that when it's in the middle of the day in summer, you might be craving accents that are lighter and/or brighter, so if you have a favorite pillow/sweater/fill-in-the-blank-item that the color of consistently makes you happy, integrating that color or colors might be a good way to lighten/brighten things up seasonally, so make sure the paint colors look good with it/them.

If you do go the stronger/cleaner route, to keep it from looking childish, one option would be to incorporate natural textures while keeping the uber-sparkly bits to a minimum (1-2 mirrors, 1-2 sparklies). Another is to go glam with mirrors and metals (new hardware for bedroom furniture, perhaps?). There are other ways too, but those are the easiest to pull off.

Oh, and with that much dark color going on, you probably should take it easy on the black. Unless you're into the goth look, which, while there's nothing wrong with that, doesn't exactly say "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

I also have to caution you about the glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling; a friend of mine did that, and apparently whatever was used on the backing wrecked the ceiling (her folks were NOT pleased). So if you're sold on the idea, just be 100% sure it's going to be easy to remove.

P.S. I've included a picture that I've always loved the moody quality of, but I have no idea where I got it.

The other is the film of Midsummer Night's Dream with Rupert Everett as Oberon and Michelle Pfeiffer as Titania.

Both have wonderful, elegant images of fairyland to inspire you.

I really like all of the suggestions! I wouldn't do glow in the dark star stickers.....my preschooler has them in his room. :-) Instead I would do little lights.

These LED lights (or something similar) in the wall vases like the ones pricklypear suggested would be pretty. Or even in hanging paper lanterns.

I would think about a vinyl wall decal of a bare winter tree, perhaps with a moon painted behind it... against the dark purple blue or green you are going to paint the walls. Something to give you this feel:

You can find these wall decals on amazon etc and they don't damage the wall so you can remove in the future if you change your mind.

Real dried interestingly shaped branches stuck in vases or stands from which you can hang lanterns, light strings etc.

Love geokid's lighting suggestions! I think I'd call them elegant whimsy .. and I think that's key to keeping a grown up look.

And while I love the texture of the purple ruffles for a faerie room, I looooove that purple bedspread for my own room :) I shop Urban Outfitters for my nieces but never for myself. I'm going to check them out!

I wasn't prepareed to like the ideas and opened the thread thinking I would say don't put a lot of money into it -- it will be short-lived, but summer nights and fireflies, Midsummer Night's Dream sort of thing -- love it.

If you do colored walls, a brushed silver mirror would be pretty. Silver accents will keep a lighter feel with the dark colors and would work if you go with a lighter palette (the Midsummer Night's Dream movie recommended above). You may want incorporate some woody and some silver.

I do want to suggest you stay away from the glow in the dark stickers. They are a more graphic star that suits a kid's (little boys's) room rather than a light and whimsical night room like you are talking about. They are also a sticky mess and pain in the neck when you want to remove them. I had to remove some other people put up years ago and have not forgiven them. ;-) I would look to lighting ideas and more sophisticated reflective ideas -- paint, tiny mirrors, etc.

I like the gauzy curtains around or over the bed, but another thing you could consider would be tree branches, painted silver and wrapped with tiny lights that could form a headboard or canopy.

If you like those smocked curtains, World Market has them in one size only (84 inch length) in white for $29. I thought it was a good price.

I did want to add some practical ideas to this list. You've probably already heard the saying "Paint is your friend!" It's true for wall of a room but it's also true for accessories. I don't know what your budget is, but you can quickly and easily paint most accessories. I totally agree with the suggestion to go with silver accessories where you can. They would look lovely with the colors and the theme of your room. But, by shopping places like Hobby Lobby, Michaels,local consignment shops and even Goodwill stores you may find any number of items that may be the wrong color or look shabby, but a quick coat of silver spray paint can turn them into "perfectly awesome". Acrylic craft paint can also be used for many projects. Stay away from the silver paint that will give you a high gloss aluminum-like finish, which will show up any small defects and can end up looking cheap. An old shabby bedside table can take on a glam look with the right silver paint. A mirror with a wood or plastic frame that looks ugly now, can look spot-on perfect with a coat of silver paint.

Someone here mentioned adding a tree branch painted white. I've made this kind of tree before to use as an Easter tree. If you like this idea, be sure that you have a place for it where you and your guests won't end bumping in to it. You can even hang it on a wall using a wall vase, painted whatever color you like. Speaking from experience, you first need to trim your branch so that it fits nicely wherever you want to use it., You can even wire 2 or 3 branches together to get the shape you want. You need to first use a spray sealant on it. And then spray it white or silver.

If you want the branch to be free standing like mine, I used a 2-cup empty yogurt container and filled with with plaster of paris. I found a 6" piece of plastic irrigation pipe at my local hardware store and, positioned it in the middle of the container with tape. I then poured the plaster around it. Once the plaster had dried, I slipped the end of my branch into it and it worked great. Just make sure that the branch you're using fits into the pipe first, though! You can pick up a small pail and paint it to hold the container.

That moon wall clock is wonderful.

I was in Home Goods yesterday and a woman was walking ariund with a giant silk flower. I mean giant - the bloom was about 18" across. Something loke that would be cool propped up somewhere. I'm sure you could find something like that on eBay or at a Home Goods type of store.
