My husband has done some DNA testing, Autosomal, which is where you match cousins and that is probably what he is asking you to do. The other hubs did was Y testing, trying to find males with the same surname. One thing you can do to have a little more control over the results is to 1) make sure you have the kit number and that you set up the password. I had ordered kits for two people and paid for them myself. This was so I could see the results but I also included their email addresses so they would get results and match notifications as well. Once I determined if hubs was related to them (one yes, one no), then I had them change the passwords so that I can no longer get into their kit information. Our situation is a little different than yours but again in our case, like yours, these were total strangers who agreed to help us out. ] Be aware that there are sites that the DNA information can be downloaded to sites like gedcom where people that have different companies that test can compare results. This person may then have your information out there for anyone to compare your DNA to theirs. Names are not listed, just your kit number and he would probably put his email address as the contact person. There is an option of not putting email address at all but then that limits possible matches from contacting him/you. These are questions you should discuss before you do the test. Know if he is having the results sent to him only, you only, or both. If you have them sent only to you, then you can request him sending his to you and you could be the one who sees if there is a match. The person who hubs did not match still appreciated receiving the information and we still keep in touch. The one who did match has helped confirmed our lines matching back to the GGGF in the late 1700's. The autosomal testing is not as definite. We get matches all the time but the probability is small. It has helped to find some relatives that we weren't sure of. Do you know the name of the company and type of test?

Rootsweb is one I have had some luck with: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ When I started searching on the web for sites, I also thought the word was geneology, but apparently it is spelled with an "a" -- genealogy. It is interesting to do family research, and you can learn some history. I found out that one great, great, great grandfather was on friendly terms with Benedict Arnold. Didn't expect that. I also found that some of my ancestors came from Holland, which I had not known. Hope your search is fruitful!

Izzie, you can also find many free resources on the web just by using Google. As an example, try Googling, (name picked at random just for example), substitute the name you are looking for exactly as below. Using the "quote" marks will help pare down the results to a more manageable amount. "james reed" "genealogy" "tulsa" Or you can use just a last name like this" "reed" "family" "oklahoma" Try many different combinations of words like family, genealogy, with your family names and locations and you will be surprised how much free information you can find on line. There are some Google genealogy search tips at the site below. Here is a link that might be useful: Google Genealogy searches

My friend who is really into genealogy says what ever sites you use, keep checking and doing internet searches over the long term, as there is always new stuff being added to the internet. I have found that to be true. Yes. More information does get put out there. I worked with the two sites I mentioned above. I had extensive information just from doing that. Even if you don't have an Ancestry membership, you can do searches on a person's name in Google. You'll find at least some partial Ancestry trees. I used those as clues and was able to use the other resources to do more research. From there, I found a couple of blogs that helped fill in some gaps. I just started with Ancestry on Christmas Eve. I've rather quickly have been able to put trees together based on previous research. There are a lot of pictures and stories. I've run into two adoption situations. One was a relative by marriage. She gave up her child. They found her biological relatives by dna testing. I made my tree and my relative is on there. I was contacted. I have a couple of pictures to share and just a little anecdotal information because I knew her. The other situation I came across just the other day. A lady was raised by another family after her mother died in a house fire when this lady was a toddler. She knows her parents names, but couldn't get back further on her mother's side of the family and the death occurred after the 1940 Census so information is still locked up under privacy laws. I am looking at the family through some other branches. I contacted them because they had some info that is different. The grandmother was a backup singer with more famous connections. I thought maybe they had listed her stage name. It's still a mystery, but they are looking at my trees. I've suggested dna testing.
