Dust removal tips
Comments (12)For me, it has been vacuum, damp rag and swiffer duster depending on the item in question. Overall the damp rag is definitely the most versatile for me, and I find if the rag is microfiber it helps a bit ... maybe because it is less lint-y itself? I don't know. And I agree that it requires frequent rinsing of said rag. The dryer has helped a bit as well, for things that are fabric but not really washable. Just put all my son's plush toys around the "fluff" cycle about 8 times and they finally start to have less of the cement dust/drywall dust/renovation smell about them. But no matter what I do, it just seems to be a time consuming process that starts all over again when I finally feel like I've gotten somewhere. I have declared war on the layers of dust in my house, and so far I am not winning. But I intend to inflict as much damage as possible on the enemy with my micro fibre rag!...See MoreRemoving drywall from plaster without damaging plaster
Comments (22)Progress: And 1 inch of what may have been the original 1887 wallpaper. I like the green: I ended up using the circular saw to make grid cuts 12-18" apart. I used the multi tool to make cuts closer to the wall and corners where the circular saw couldn't clear. I tried different methods to pry the sections off; some were too narrow; some had too much flex. A 5" wide blade, hammered in and then pried down, did most of the work. Where the ceiling met the wall, I did a combination of breaking the paint and skim coat with a putty knife hammered upwards, and just cutting around with a multitool. There was only about a 1/8" thick bond to break through so it came away, thankfully, easily. I'd say it was altogether 10 hours in a 6 x 8 room to get this far--crazy! I definitely won't be doing the rest of the house. In most other rooms I plan to knock off the flecky balls and skim coat the ridged scallops, like Worthy suggests. In the double parlor, which has crown molding, I'll go through this routine. It's a great upper body workout! Some of the original ceiling is loose, so I'll be putting in some plaster washer anchors. You can also see where they poked holes to verify the location of studs. Those and the cracks will get fiberglass tape and patched. A little skimming, a little sanding, a little paint, and she'll be done. Of course, before all that, I'll do a thorough scrub down with tsp and water, then rinse, dry, and coat with benjamin moore calcimine recoater. Then plaster bonding agent to all the damaged places, and then fiberglass tape, patch/fill with durabond, knock down with a putty knife, then easy sand, then sanding, priming, and finally paint. What could be easier?!? Hope everybody else is having as much fun as I am this weekend! And yes, I'm saving a sample of the wallpaper for the house book....See MoreHow much dust from removal of tile floor?
Comments (10)Get a good respirator and wear it when you are removing the tile and grout! Recently, I removed the dried grout from a small tile sample board with a hand grout saw ( in order to try another color of grout), and then when I went inside to mix up the grout, I noticed these horrible warnings on the grout package about not breathing the silica dust in the grout and how it can cause deadly silicosis and lung cancer, etc! Afterwards, I ended up with such a terrible hacking cough that lasted for over a month from breathing even just that little bit of grout dust. I hope I didn't permanently damage my lungs. Hope this helps you!...See MoreGrout issue due to drywall dust on brand new floor.
Comments (79)Wow! Just came across this thread. We have Marazzi Chateau Reserve hickory grove and same happened with our grout. I chose a grout that would blend in with tile and also chose this tile bc I wanted a very thin grout line. I have tried everything- tile brush , steam mop. Our contractor didn’t care. I will Reread this thread and try some of the options mentioned. Our tile looks great but the grout drives me crazy. It just looks dirty since it’s a lighter color. Makes me angry when I see it bc I would have never picked such a light color. Luckily - it’s only in our master bath. It’s a shame some contractors are so unscrupulous. I know there are honest ones out there, too bad we didn’t hire one ....See Morespanky_md
