Update on my GSD's Stomach issues

Reference to my earlier thread, (see link below) I want to update as follow: The GSD still eliminates inside the create or on the foyer floor when I tie her outside.

Took to the Vet:

1) Intestinal parasites Test is NEGATIVE. The doctor gave Panacur liquid 7 CC for three days just in case if there are any nondeductible worms etc. I started the dose today

2)The VET said that the Dog does not have any symptom of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and said that TLI is not required. She said that since the stool is solid and not liquid, no need of TLI test. I tried to tell her that some times the dog has small amount of loose motion, but she ruled out TLI 100%

Stress: She has no stress at all. She plays very well with my other dog and with us. My other dog always tries to dominate the GSD when I let them out together for playing . She grabs the GSD by neck and chews her fur little bit. I asked the doctor if there is a possibility that GSD is scared of my other dog. The doctor felt that this is not a issue. ( I took both the dogs to the doctor). By the way, the dog is completely outside the create since my previous thread. I am taking her for an hour walk everyday.

Potty Training again?

Initially, couple of weeks ago when the GSD had an accident (She had loose motion) I did not use Enzyme cleaners in the create and I just hosed with Water. Also after reading the thread here, I started keeping the GSD in the Foyer in the night where again she eliminated two nights. Here again, I did not use Enzyme cleaner. So the doctor told me that the she started pooping in the create and in the foyer floor because I did not completely get rid of the smell and she thinks she can poop there as she could smell poop

The doctor says this is a training issue and that I need to start Create training her again.

So in a nutshell, seems like I lost 1 year of potty training her because I did not use Enzyme cleaner when she had an accident.

Your furbaby thanks you for letting her be out with her people all day!!

I'm glad you changed routines with her. It's difficult when we have to retrain something we thought we already had down pat - but it is doable.

Good to hear she checked out OK. If she keeps inappropriately eliminating despite the continued house training, I would get a second opinion.

So Hubby did indeed make it home (though late). We spent a good deal of yesterday cleaning and organizing but we still have a lot to do. With the chaos our life has been for the past several months cleaning (other than the basics) has been a very low priority. CT scan revealed that the mass in her shoulder is non-homogenous, there is definitely infection and the other parts could be abscess, live tumor and/or dead tumor cells. Plan is to do a CT-guided needle biopsy of all the different masses today. She should also get her stomach tube. The battles raging in her body have taken a toll on her in many ways. Probably the most difficult one right now is that she is easily confused and agitated and has no short-term memory. We have to explain to her multiple times where she is and why she's there and what is happening. They put her on oxygen last night (she has developed apnea and shallow breathing due in large part to the meds) and you could see it was really helping her but she kept wanting to take the cannula off. Hubby is at the hospital now hoping to catch up with the oncologist. I suspect he's going to be gone all day. We're still nowhere near ready. Adding to the stress, we came home some time after 11 pm (having spent the evening at the hospital) to discover the newly-vacuumed living room full of garbage and three very dirty and guily chihuahuas. My fault - I had left the (nearly full) garbage can where they could get at it. With a ham bone and other tasties in there it was just too tempting. So we spent our evening scrubbing floors and puppies. At least we hadn't shampooed the carpet yet.

I won't go so far as to say you are abusing your dog - but surely if you work from home, your dog could be tethered to you? If she is a chewer, it will NEVER go away if she is locked up a good chunk of the day. Dogs destroy because they are bored and under stimulated. Also, how can you correct the problem, if you're unable to correct her in the act? Your dog won't just snap out of it and become a well mannered doggy citizen without the opportunities to mess up and learn from you. My beagle was a chewer - I was home with her all day, too. If she couldn't be beside me, she was in her crate, but never for more than a half hour, unless we were out. Your dog should be with you as often as possible, inside and out, all day every day. I am saying this from experience, not to criticize. The more time she spent in the crate, the more destructive she would be once she was let out and we turned around. Dogs need tons of social interactions inside and out. The less social they're allowed to be, particularly if they're locked up - the more likely they are to become shy and agressive. You WILL end up with an agressive, destructive dog if this dog isn't given more time with it's family. Are you outside with the dogs when you put them out for an hour, or inside? IF you're not with them, then the only time GSD is getting social interaction with the family for any length of time, is when your sons take her, correct? Also, I'm glad you're getting her checked out, something is obviously wrong. You might have work ahead of you, even if the problem is solved, because your dog may have learned popping in the crate, gets her let out.

A guy locked up in re-hab evaluates your personality & finds it wanting because you didn't play into his scenario & enable him to destroy his own life & everyone else's as well. A policeman (I helped him buy a house) once told me that it doesn't matter who you are or what your background, education, moral training... *nothing* matters to an alcoholic except alcohol, nothing matters to a drug addict except the drug. The person is no longer in control; the alcohol/drug is in control. "Alcoholic" & "drug addict" *become* the person's personality-manipulative, detached, cold. (ever notice how so many alkies & druggies seem like the same person? They are.) & it affects the personalities of their families, too. It gives the family no choice but to become "authoritarian" (or else get carried away in the alcoholic whirlpool-as you said, your only other choice would be to turn a blind eye to the presence of alcohol & drugs in your home, & it doesn't stop there). Don't get manipulated into trying to develop a healthy relationship when he's in rehab; he has time on his hands, & he's all into manipulation. If he can make you feel bad about yourself, he's got control. & if he doesn't like authoritarianism, he better stay away from jail...

Sounds like this is just a phase you have to live with for a while, not forever. Agree with the active (live) yogurt and the pro-biotic pills, and plenty of water. Mild exercise is also good -- even just a short walk around in the house. Foods that I could tolerate included plain white rice, and cooked carrots. Add some fiber to your diet as soon as you can -- I ate a bowl of fiber cereal with milk every morning. Avoid anything with too much sugar, cut way down on caffeine and chocolate. Keep a food diary so you can identify and track your own "safe" and "danger" foods. Also pay attention to time of day that you eat. If you have problems after eating late in the evening, you may be developing acid reflux. No idea if this applies to you, but for me the enforced diet was an opportunity to lose a few pounds and develop a some "good" eating habits. Hopefully you will only need to take such precautions for a few weeks. Good luck for a quick recovery :-)

The lack of diarrhea does not eliminate the possibility of EPI. There have been cases of low TLI in clinically normal patients. Some breeders are checking TLI as health screens prior to breeding, and eliminating carriers. Also some friends (both of whom are vets) adopted a very thin GSD several years ago. While she tested negative for EPI, she did much better on the Eukanuba diet for GSDs. Didn't have your dog's problem, but can't hurt.

Speaking of diet, can you please mention again what you are feeding her?

I think that even though being outside the crate will require increased diligence from you, that it will improve your dog's quality of life immensely. An hour walk every day is excellent.

Retraining is an excellent idea. Check out my own personal experience in the "stupid owner can't train smart Rottweiler" thread. Over the course of 2-3 weeks, retraining worked. I tethered her and the 2 times I caught her pooping in the house and picked up and took her outside, it made an impression. Literally picked her up and took her outside.

Other than cleaning the area (you might want to have the tile in the foyer sealed - it will be easier to clean and wont stain or hold the odor as much) I think you might need to spend some more time with this pup outside. Take advantage of a day off and spend as much time outside as possible, when your dog eliminates - pick a training word and in a nice playful voice give her a command to poop. You can use whatever word you choose as long as you are consistant. Then praise her as though she has just brought you a full bag of hundred dollar bills. You can also take her pile outside and as you walk by and she smells it give her the command again use a nice voice....she will get it. Some dogs have a harder time with potty training when they have limited access to outdoors. Be patient and keep up the good work. She might just need more outside time.

Seth, I'm happy it looks like your GSD does not need more than potty training. I'm also very happy to hear you let her out of her crate. I'm sorry I ever said you abused your GSD ...maybe you just didn't know :-)

Meghane has given some excellent advice. We have an EPI GSD-mix, and our vet said it was "impossible" that she had EPI because she didn't have the "classic" symptoms he was familiar with. I insisted on the cTLI test anyway, and she came back with a score so low, it was almost zero! (Anything lower than 2.5 is diagnositic for EPI.) Not to be disrespectful, but your vet cannot rule out EPI without the cTLI test. Many dogs have tested positive without the classic symptoms.

If you don't have success with your other approaches, or if your girl starts showing more of the symptoms on the EPI link below, you might consider requesting the cTLI test, just to be safe.
