HELP! Don't know what paint color to choose

Hi all!

I need help! We are getting ready to paint the inside of our custum home. I have bought samples and samples of paint. It is a very open floor plan (kitch, living, and dining). Our pride is our Madura Gold granite that will be in the kitchen. Does anyone have any color suggestions? I am leaning towards Lowes-Eddie Bauer Pecan. Any suggestions or pics would be greatly appriciated!

Well it is hard to give color advice over the internet. But choosing color is understandably a difficult thing to do. Especially when all you have is that little chip of color and who wants to keep buying quarts?

I suggest, get creative put samples up and see what works best in your room, lighting! SW has sample jars of paint, $5 each, which are helpful. If your kitchen cabinets are cherry, consider green. Green looks awesome with cherry (SW Svelte Sage, Clary Sage, Bamboo Shoot, e.g.). Check out SW Ivoire or Blonde for gold tones. They are very popular kitchen colors.

Before you commit, paint a large swatch on the wall and examine it in different light or paint the color on posterboard.

Hi Plllog! "That is, I know it's possible, but might not be in your budget." See, there's the crux of it. This little beverage center idea of mine was not in the original budget. (Nor, alas, were new drywall in the livingroom and halls, the gorgeous walnut top on my used cabinet island, the matching gorgeous top that will soon be on the new media cabinet and the near full gut of the bathroom.) And we're still determined to get through remodeling our ugly duckling without taking out a loan or dipping into savings. Conventional wisdom says: Wait until the coffers are full again but that's so hard to do. First off, I'm a cheapskate. Even if the goose who laid the golden egg waddled up onto my deck and built a nest, I'm not sure I would willingly pay someone to mess up the walls I just paid to fix. Second, I'm not quite cheap enough. My new kitchen is starting to look pretty good but, gosh, it would look so much better if the microwave and coffee maker didn't take up so much room on that one counter. I'm willing to spend a little bit more to change that, especially since I'm going to have a piece of countertop leftover that should be just the right size. Still, it's nice to know that it's possible. Maybe when the coffers ARE full again I'll put a tile counter outside on my deck to shade the golden goose should she happen to wander by ;) Thanks for your help!

It's easier to get a paint to match or coordinate or contrast with a whole room than it is to pick accessories to work with the painted walls, so I'd add a rug, window treatments, pillows, & pictures before I painted the walls. Since the sofa is such a large block of a strong gray color, & the floor is a big expanse of solid wood-brown color, you can use some really bright accessories: Something like aqua (or turquoise or teal)/apple green (or mint or lime)/orange (or tangerine or peach)/yellow(sunflower/lemon) & throw in a little pale gray to tie it together. Maybe a bright,geometric patterned rug in the stronger colors, with pillows in a mix of solids & patterns, & curtains or drapes in an abstract floral or leaf pattern on a white background because windows are about light. Hang some pictures, & then figure out those walls. I'll bet a pale pale gray will be beautiful.

Since one of the givens is the white tile, then leave the doors and trim white even if you go SW Cream for the rest. It is too bad, as Jennifer Hogan says, that your aunt didn't want to make global decisions at the outset. Usually the most harmonious palette in an open plan is to take the very lightest shade from the granite for the walls while harmonizing with the floors, then the furnishings--not easy. Fortunately, the rug is well chosen, so the different whites will work. To repeat, get very large posterboard for your samples and put them against every single element, first the givens: cabinet, granite, floors, white tile, then the rug and furnishings. Test them under daylight and nightlight and on different walls. This is what color consultants do--take it all in together. Good luck!

Thank you both! I have spent so much at SW :) I am going with Kilim Beige. They should start painting this week-I will post pictures :)

Kilim Beige is a GREAT choice! I have Latte, on the same strip but darker, in our den. I love it. The caramel tones are so pleasing. I also have Divine White, the lightest color on the strip, in the guest bathroom, accented with light turquoise towels and shower curtain.

When I paint the dining room next year, it's going to be Nomadic Desert, one shade darker that the Kilim Beige.

It's a great strip - one you could base a whole house of rooms on.

I'm sure you will be pleased.

With an open floor plan, I'd bite and pay for a color consultant, because I know I'd screw it up. lol.

My son has an open floor plan, and the kitchen/breakfast nook is painted a reddish color. The wall right next to it is painted a very light light yellow. Of course professional painters did that and it looks great!

But it makes the open floor plan give each room their own color, which is very pretty.

Man, paintpro -- that's worth it just for the DK-to-Aura and F&B-to-Aura formulas! (have you seen some of those, btw? Do you know how they accurate they are? I tend to think they can't be all that accurate, because of the different nature of the basic tones in the DK and Aura colorants, if nothing else...)

The match to DKC and F&B are excellent matches. Some of the best in the industry. If you are trying to buy paint for touch ups...You will never be happy. The over all match is very good, also hey supply the formula they used to make the color. So if you like the DrySamples you just have to have your local paint store follow the formula provided.
