Is a backsplash really necessary?
Comments (37)"Capital Culinarian or a Bluestar shouldn't be sitting in front of combustible drywall." Drywall is not considered combustible. Any gas appliance listed for home use will have required clearances to flammable surfaces in the installation instructions. Most are 'zero clearance' meaning the sides and back of the unit can be directly against flammable surfaces (like your wood cabinets on each side). Many of the larger stoves also have a requirement for cabinets on each side of the stove and above the top surface to be at least 18 inches above the top of the stove (not from the grates but from the top of the stove). A back-splash behind a stove (especially a larger one used top cook a lot) should be something easy to clean. Commercial kitchens often have tile walls, but they can use a garden hose to clean up with (and many do at the end of the day, with HOT water from the hose). The commercial stoves are not usually zero clearance (and handles and oven doors can get hot enough to burn you) and often have room on each side to make cleaning easier. The tile is not flammable, so the clearance rules are met (ceramic tile on even cement backer board is very heat resistant and a lousy conductor of heat also)....See MoreRepainting house's trim and other exterior wood ??
Comments (3)I looked in storage cabinet in one garage and found can of one trim color left from original painting--I think he can use it to color match what most of the trim is painted... I went to SW local store but they were out of most of the color strips and had two idiot boys running the front-- went by an Ace store that sells BM paint and got some color samples and we found a dark chocolate brown that works for the fence and garage doors... The gutters will need to be color matched I think--but will tell him to use a stock color that is closest-- The owners used a gray for the gutters because that is closest to the roof which has lot of gray tones in it-- Personally I don't care for the gray layered with dark and mid tone brown trim colors-- I would go with more a gray-brown greige but my husband didn't like any of the sample colors I had......See MoreSorting out 84 y.o. poorly-painted trim for repainting nicely
Comments (5)Okay okay, you're forcing me to tell the other kitchen story. Love that one about the Mercedes---best not to touch the leather or something?? Sometimes I feel like Indiana Jones in this house, making archeological discoveries and not so much un-remuddling. Thought I had a very very ugly wall and base cabinet combo with a cheapy formica countertop, so I decided to tear out the wall cab and have this new window installed there instead. South exposure is very important in Mpls. Was tearing out the cabinet prior to window guy arriving and realized, to my horror, that this was a built in that had been bastardized by someone's application of wood-grain plastic laminate. They'd removed the doors (sob), stuck dark wood laminate on all the surfaces, and installed MDF doors. No wonder it was so difficult to remove? Had I known, I probably would have kept it, but as it was chewed up by my removal efforts, I kept the base and am painfully taking down the glue goo and tossed the ugly doors, etc etc. These people apparently liked the *look* of wood, but preferred it in its plastic form. *sigh* Thanks again lads, appreciate it. Will be trying SoyGel first. We'll get her back to her full glory, poor thing....See MoreRepainting trim- Which white? Which gloss?
Comments (13)I think BM also has a brochure of Pottery Barn colors. BM has a brochure of their whites all together and it gives you a real idea of which whites are grayish, greenish or creamy. The Simply White in the brochure looks like a beautiful white-cream - it has a brightness to it. The decorator's white in comparison looks a little duller. The Dove White is a beautiful cream. I went with Semigloss for the trim with a passel of kids and a dog running around, I thought it might be a little easier to maintain than the satin....See MoreFaron79
