nautical blue/yellow theme for baby boy's room

I'm trying to choose paint colors for baby Harry's new bedroom (he'll be 5 months old when we move in). Here is my inspiration photo:

I love the nautical feel of the blue/yellow here and our house is coastal craftsman. Does anyone have a good color combo suggestion? I don't want the yellow to be too bright... more subtle and the blue to go with it. A friendly but peaceful environment. I'm also trying to figure out if I should paint all the walls yellow or maybe do the bottom half blue or ?? Ideas??

I have BM Pale Sea Mist in DS' room. It is also a nautical theme. The color is more of a pale greenish yellow depending on the lighting.

I have a captains bed similar to the bed in your inspiration room, it is currently in the garage waiting to be painted while 2 year old DS sleeps on a mattress on the floor.

And here is the same color when it was my daughter's nursery. She never actually even moved into the room, she wanted to sleep with her older sister. We moved here when she was 18 months.

I think it looks better in the lighting when it was a "girl room" because my camera was better.

I started on the map room! Since the I took the pics I am posting, we hung more art work, clock etc. I don't know what to do with the windows. What about dark blue curtains? We still need to get a desk and chest of drawers to match the bed he picked out. He blew me away with his selection. I thought he wanted a cute bunk bed but when he saw the black daybed - it was love a 1st sight - go figure. I really do not want to put too much black in there - any suggestions on that would be appreciated. We ran out of time to do the ceiling compass stencil but it is planned for my next visit. He totaly loves the mural and hanging airplane. We have another airplane in yellow coming for the other corner and inflatable globes for the other side of the room. We found this US map at a toy store and took it to Ben Franklin where they mounted it on a magnetic sheet and framed it. He and his friends really got into putting magnets on places he has been and places he wants to go. He loves that the map is laminated and he can draw on it with a grease pen. His Thomas the Train table fit nicely in the decor. We still have a lot to do but it is a start. Any suggestions?

Well I think it's really all a matter of what one defines as cute. I love the little soft knit clothes for infant to toddler with the little trucks, animals and duckies ,and sports themes. To me a baby is a baby for such a short time that I love seeing them dressed in soft knits and cutesy tones. When I see a baby dressed like an older child or adult it doesn't impress me. Kids clothes should be about comfort. Denim doesn't belong on an infant. When I see little girls still in diapers or barely out of them dressed in diva clothing I think of how they can't climb, run,jump and crawl around freely like I believe children of both genders should. Don't even want to think about the ritual of trying to go on the potty with all the paraphernalia. There is plenty of time for fashion later. Babies and toddlers should be s dressed for comfort.

Blue/Chocolate bedding for sure! Would love that with something like the airplane wall decoration in pic #1 Look around at your other stores for accessories that maybe aren't just "airplaney" Bringing a "pig" piggy bank in with mostly the same colors but maybe one "new" color will all some eclectic look. Check etsy to some wall decals that may give you an idea of what to put on the wall or other things that you may want to incorporate. You can order those or paint something like them...My mother suggested we paint a tree on an empty wall in my baby girls room, so I went on Etsy, and have a tree, some birds, squirrels, nuts, etc. that my parents painted based off the decal. For something else on the walls, I would love to see some basic frames with shapes or letters in a boyish colored plaid inside them. Or maybe check Target for some wall decor "words" in boyish prints/plaids...above my babies crib is "Dream, Dance, LAugh" in girl prints. I put one in the middle on the top row and the other 2 on the bottom row. I thought it would be a lot of words, but love it. I also got one of those book shelves that hang on the wall from Target, but have seen them at PB or landofnod. Pick some books to display in their that coordinate with your colors but don't have airplanes...this will give you a picture that isn't out of place but helps with the overly matchy. A basket of baby blankets or burp blankets will add more pattern and texture to the room. Don't forget Hobby Lobby!

I found a sailboat with navy sails at a consignment store near my home today. Also, I am attempting to paint a very abstract sailboat on canvas (I am no artist). We'll see how that goes!! I bought two small white lamps with red shades @ Target. They may turn out to be too small. I think I will get a couple of baskets or stg bins to put on shelf of night stands. Also thinking of buying one of those storage cube deals from Target and navy & red stg bins to put in them. Any thoughts?

Have you ever visited Brewster Home Fashions website? They have a ton of fine wallpaper as well as options for children's rooms. There's some really nice options there and it's an easy, cheap alternative to paint.

I can't help with paint, but my GS has those same colors in his room and you'll really like it! Very cheery.

Wait, I do have yellow in my kitchen, and it's very pale and doesn't scream "Yellow!" It's SW Tea light. I really do like it.

You might look at Ben Moore Windham Cream (HC-6) -It's one of my favorite colors and would be beautiful with navy and white....

Wow, this thread got revived on Friday the 13th!! I guess I should update.... So I ended up finding a wallpaper mural that I fell in love with so I switched direction and now I'm painting the walls Martha Stewart "Dolphin" and putting up the mural. The paint is already up and I love it! So peaceful.

That is one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE murals - forest animals, sea-life, birds, butterflys, plus other interests. You could play a "find-the-object" game with that mural. Let's see: Can you find the dress, girly shoes,music, party hat, bicycle, balloon, chandelier, goose, coffee, china, crown?? Yet at the same time, it doesn't say "theme" nor is it too busy. Saving that picture for my DD when she has a baby.
