If paint finish is your most important criteria

Hey y'all. I am not new to GW, but new to your wonderful board. I'm usually over on the garden boards! We are about to embark on a kitchen project. We have a small 1923 bungalow with a tiny kitchen (barely 9 x 9 ft). It will be a little jewel of a kitchen- we are doing lots of "hidden" appliances with panels etc. and smaller appliances to make the best us use of the space. Right now I am trying to decide on a cabinet company. I want to be respectful of and reflective of the age and character of the house. I want a warm white (not white, not cream) painted finish. I don't want it to be shiny or slick. I know there are many reputable, wonderful companies used by you guys. I've seen great kitchens on here from Crown Point, Crystal, Medallion, P&F etc. But I guess I would say that the paint finish will be the major deciding criteria for me. I've poured over the archives here and will be visiting some showrooms next week. Are there lines I should be sure to see? Does anyone do an especially nice matte sheen or a brushed on finish in a mid to mid-upper level line? (semi custom or custom) Thanks and looking forward to getting to know you all as we move along with this project!

Many cabinet lines are regional, and most custom makers are very local indeed. If you included your location, you might get more suggestions for specific makers in your area. You've hit many of the national higher end makers, but many of them spray rather than brush their finishes. If you are looking for a brushed finish with brush marks in it, then local custom would be the first route to explore.

Take a look at Medallion cabinets, (they go by the Schuler brand name at Lowe's). I highly recommend them. They are semi-custom cabinets with a beautiful matte painted finish. I used them (Schuler) for my kitchen and I am very pleased with the quality of the finish and construction. I know that they have a few different "whites" that you can choose from. 1. DISEASE RESISTANCE in a humid warm southeastern US climate. And a subset here for many areas of the yard: shade tolerance. We don't use inorganic sprays. This is a deal breaker if a rose doesn't have it. 2. FEW THORNS or at least nothing like a rugosa. A deal breaker for most locations. 3. ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE ENTIRE PLANT. I want to like it when it's not in bloom too--much as I feel about rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias in the yard when they're not in bloom (which is most of the time). A few roses here in zone 7 are evergreen (teas, especially) and that quality is a huge plus. A deal breaker criteria if I really don't like the looks of the whole plant much at all. (Most non-climbing hybrid teas would probably fall into this deal-breaker category, though not all.) 4. REPEAT BLOOMING. Not a deal breaker for some locations here, but for most locations, a once-bloomer is a deal breaker. By growing roses, we're looking for summer and fall color that isn't provided by the other plants we have in the yard. (We do have some once-bloomers that I couldn't resist, though.) 5. SCENT. Not a deal breaker, but the thing that helps to decide in the end between two highly desirable roses that roughly meet other criteria. Most of the roses I've ordered have some scent. 6. VARIETY. This is usually easy to satisfy, since it opens up possibilities more than closing them down: A. Good variety in bloom forms--all the way from singles to high-centered or cabbagy doubles--but overall I'd like more roses that are semi-doubles with wavy petals and if I had to have just one form, this would be it. Those are much harder to find, though, so mostly we have doubles with a couple of singles. I like blousy doubles quite well too, but many of the doubles are tighter--like General Schablikine that we're also both crazy about. B. Good variety in bloom size, attached to plants of different heights and spreads. Most blooms are intermediate in size, but the eye's sweeping view of the roses, either in a vase or in the landscape, is enhanced by some tiny rose blooms and some huge ones, on plants with differing growth habits. C. Good variety in colors within the yard as a whole, but tied to particular color intentions for the particular spot I'm thinking about placing it. For any one spot, I usually have in mind a particular color for combining with some other roses or other plants. Or for a longer sweep, I often have in mind some repetition of color and/or form even if not using the same variety to accomplish that. (Example: for standing out against a soft pink and yellow overall background, General Schablikine will work to approximately repeat Cinco De Mayo's bloom color--though not its form or leaf colors.) D. Good variety in overall plant size and habit. We like a layered look from front to back and are not into straight rows of roses or other plants in any location. Hoovb, you are right. No water, no roses. Everything else comes second. More water = better roses. In this dry place you have to be willing to shovel mulch. Lots of it. And with all that water and mulch, you have to be willing to prune...unless you have the gift of a very large garden and you have the plants very far apart. It's pretty easy to get fast rose satisfaction around here as long as you water and mulch and weed. No one near me grows the truly large rose plants and so weeding is required. I saw a fair number of well planted rose beds fall to weeds and then get abandoned or removed. The major cause of rose disaster here is not disease but the lack of water, improper pruning due to crews and weed takeover. Patience really helps. I was sure I got something else instead of Lion's rose. The little bitty nothing special flowers and small size bush. Then after it had some root growth for a few years, up came the robust canes and sprays of huge delicate hued blossoms fading gently to white. I just love this rose now. I was so very discouraged when it was a young plant. It's a wonderbush as a large plant. I learned to be realistic about what would do well here and let go of the ones that wanted to be in a different climate from mine. I learned to reduce the number of plants to what I could care for. A few years ago, I passed that point and I was feeling overwhelmed. I had many annual beds and too many potted fussy plants and those that needed water twice a day ( the big collection of potted azaleas, hydrangeas and blueberries with their never ending thirst) . It looked great but I was getting tired out keeping it all looking good. Now it's mostly roses and Camellias with some other things like epies and orchids and one or two azaleas and hydrangeas but not the massive diverse collection I used to have. It was getting to be too expensive to water and repot them all the time. Now that's it mainly roses, I feel like I have time to enjoy them again.

First off, it is important to note that price is not an accurate determination of quality. The two have nothing to do with on another. I have had the misfortune of using subconbtractors with certification credentials that charged alot who performed low quality work. I have also have been blessed with un-certified subcontractors who did outstanding work at very reasonable rates in comparison. it is a bit presumptuous to make certified inspection of work a payment determination. Inspection, yes. Your inspection ... but certified expert flooring inspection? No way. It is a total waste of everyones time and money unless there are disagreements on a guarantee or product warranty claim after the install. It just isn't done, and if someone came into one of my stores with that attitude and criteria, it would be politely suggested to them that they would best be served finding their installed sales flooring solution elsewhere, because those types of consumers no one wants. You could do the most perfect job for them ever and they always seem to find something wrong. If not with the work, with the way they were treated. If not with the way they were treated, then they make up another excuse to comlain on the off chance that they might get a couple bucks shaved off their bills. ask for and verify references of previous similar projects. At least 3. check with your local Better Business Bureau for any unsatisfied consumer complaints against the person or company name. This is often one of the best informational tools for the consumer when confused about choosing a company. get at least 3 or more estimates for the work. Five would be even better. The more estimates you get, the more accurate the determination of average costs for your geographic location and what the companies charge on average. To make this mean anythiug they all have to be biddding on the exact same work, so ensure all work being performed and quoted is identical. ensure they are licensed (business or contractors license) to do business in your state and/or locality if it is a requirement in your area. Unlicensed contractors performing work in a state or locality requiring independent businesses to be licensed are corner cutters and is a huge red flag they they are corner cutters, so why chance them cutting other corners on your project. It is important to note that not all states and localities require licensing so check with your state and local government first. find out the guarantee period for the installation (usually a year but some states require two years by law so check with your state). Also ensure they will act as a conduit, your agent, between the you and the manufacturer in cases of factory defective products. most importantly discuss the job in detail with everyone. Get a comfort level and go with your gut feeling.

I have hesitated to join this discussion, as I have shovel pruned so many. I shamefacedly realise just how many, when I come across (often) photos of roses in other's gardens that I used to have. Last year I cut back an enormous Mme Isaac Pereire to a stump, and poisoned it. The blooms were way more sparse than they were, she has every disease known to man and she takes up a lot of real estate. And I get cut to pieces trying to get at other plants. I must be a bad poisoner, as nearly all I have poisoned regrow. Come Spring, so did MIP. But as there were buds, I thought I'd just enjoy them before I had a second go. She started to grow like topsy, and I thought I'll enjoy a few more blooms before I have another go at her. Big mistake. She never had another bloom, but has, in one year, reached her former monstrous size, and I now face the whole prospect again. I'm still thinking I'll wait and see if there's a Spring flush!

If you happen to want frameless cabinets, I know Bellmont 1900 series has an Heirloom finish, which is painted with brushstrokes. It comes in 3 colors. Their painted sample doors looked very nice, but I was going for stained from the start.

Thanks! For some reason I feel really intimidated approaching a custom cabinet maker (and at a loss about how to find someone who can make & paint a great cabinet!) I am meeting with a KD who reps Medallion so we'll see what happens. I am in a small place and the kitchen showrooms are all "appointment only." Since the finish & color is really important to me I don't want to take up someone's valuable time if the lines they carry won't work.

Medallion's Divinity is a softer white than Medallion's White Icing. Ours are on order. Medallion offers many upgrades and decorative trim. Once you start really looking you'll see how that makes a huge difference too. Most of the painted white on maple cabinets will be authentic looking and not too shiny. Good luck!

Brookhaven/Wood-Mode, Dura Supreme, QCCI are generally considered to do paint well. Showplace Wood Products recently added a matte finish at no charge (nice at the price point). All the others also offer matte.

Each of these also have versions of brushed "look" paint. The same is true for most of the brands you listed in the op.
All of the above will match some paint mfg colors at a modest charge.

Price low to high SWP, BH, Dura, WM, QCCI.

jackuvall, would you comment on Starmark cabinetry paint finish? Glossy or matte? I think most, but not all, do opaque conversion varnish, known for its durability but not easy fixability. thanks.

I don't have experience with Starmark so can't say.
Yes factory paint is more durable and more difficult for the average person to repair well. Serious repairs are best done by a pro. Often the dealer can (should) handle those.

I wanted to report back guys. I am on a quest for the perfect warm white paint finish and this might be helpful for others who search the board. Today I met with a really nice KD who reps Crystal. She also had a Shiloh display in the showroom. I was surprisingly impressed with Shiloh- it was a heavily glazed and distressed paint finish so I couldn't really judge color, but the construction and overall finish felt really solid. I studied it and looked for things like seam lines and I was impressed with the paint application. I liked the Crystal too- it was an inset, simple shaker display in a matte white. Crystal seems to have a larger number of whites from which to choose though the Shiloh Soft White seemed nice... and Shiloh has some nice colors. I am considering doing a hutch type piece in a contrasting color. Both, though, felt very "modern" to me. Living in a nearly 100 year old house full of English farmhouse type antiques, I think I am just having trouble getting used to modern paint finishes. I know they are more durable but I think I am just going to have to wrap my head around the idea.

I would prefer inset-I love the look- but I worry (or rather my DH worries) that it will be more challenging to install in our 'nothing is even, nothing is level' house and the KD did mention that it might be more prone to environmental expansion issues in an old house with more temperature swings than in modern houses. Decisions, decisions...

Belle,I highly recommend spending a full day gathering samples from several manufacturers. Bring them home in your light, compare them, and you'll see what you like. When I held Schuler next to Kraftmaid, the Schuler finish looked matte and more high end. We almost went with a local KD who used an Amish cabinet maker. He brought a sample that was a higher % sheen and if he had brought the matte version I may have been swayed. Definitely check out the different whites in your home, with your lighting. It's amazing how different whites can look! Good luck :-)

Island- I haven't made any decisions. I started this process wanting to make all my decisions like... you know... yesterday. It took so long to get DH to say yes that once he did, I wanted to go, go, go. Now I am slowing down and thinking everything through. (Though hopefully not for too long!) By the time it is all done, I'll probably be able to write a novel on different whites, different cabinets, appliances for tiny spaces...
