High Gloss Paint for front door

Does anyone know how to duplicate the high gloss look that you can see on the front doors of old buildings in Paris? when I "inspect" the paint, it is very thick, probably because of the many layers, but it has a gloss that I have not seen here in the US. Thank you for your help.

Ahhh you are talking about Fine Paints of Europe for sure. Yes, nothing we make here in the US can duplicate that finish. I haven't used it for years but I think what you want is Hollandac Brilliant which is high gloss. Look out though....it is oil based and about $95 for a eurogallon, if that is a word. A eurogallon is less than an americangallon.

Oh yes, you have got to try the Brilliant. You will love it!! It is thick, mirror shiny & goes on like silk! People just want to touch it! *LOL* Another expensive but worth it product! Hubby rolled his eyes at the price but once he saw the amazing results he keeps saying "Can we use it on this or this?" :)

NOTHING will look as good as FPE Hollandlac Brilliant. I've used some of their stuff. (I have a thread on this forum about painting the interior wood trim of our entry-door side-lites. I used their Brushing-Putty, Oil primer, and the ECO-series Brilliant White.) I'm a proud USA fan like anyone. BUT...there's nothing like that stuff here! Trust me...if you prep it right, and use good tools/techniques, you'll be dumbstruck!! Faron

I would recommend one of Fine Paints of Europe's paints for the front door. I used their high gloss paint for our front door and I absolutely love it. They have three reds in their nominal door collection although they do have loads of other colors too. Their basic european color chart is at this link. The kicker is picking the color you like - in absolute terms, I think I liked their Rembrandt Red or their Wine Red quite a lot. In actuality, I must say that with your brick red facade, I'd be tempted to use their high gloss black - check out their links - I thought the gloss black looked amazing. In my house, I used the Coach green - which is a really dark dark dark green - black until the light catches one of the angles in the door and then you see that there is a dark green in there. I love this paint, by the way. I've been looking around our house to see if there is other stuff I can paint with FPE's high gloss paints.

Someone else could probably answer this better than me, but I'm sure that spraying the lower gloss is another option. It's just not one of the options that was initially presented. Hopefully I'll know more when I receive the samples on Wednesday!

High gloss is not for me. Not because I don't think it can look good in certain applications, but because I would freak out at the first scratch. I learned my lesson (for me only) long ago on furniture and cabinets. In my first home I bought very expensive solid cherry coffee and end tables with a nice beautiful shiny finish. The cat went skidding over the coffee table and left a scratch about ten inches long. There was no way to hide it, buff it out, cover it. I'm better with painted or natural wood finishes that are more forgiving. If you don't have kids, dogs, cats or a spouse, it's probably fine. I remember my nephew once tried to figure out if a piece of jewelry was a real diamond by scratching the glass face of a vintage clock. Yeehaw, it wasn't a diamond but it did scratch the glass...

All my doors are now done with the Brilliant. I started with screen doors which look like new after 2 years. This summer I redid the front door with it and the entire front porch (which had 2 y.o. paint & looked terrible) and front trim. We'll redo the trim in back next year.

I am told it's expected to hold up for 8 years.

The paint also comes in pints. One pint of the blue did all the trim on 2 screen doors and 2 coats of my front door with some left over.

It is excellent to work with and has excellent results. If you want the Euro door look (I love the English doors as well) this is the way to go.

Have you ever tried getting your door spray painted high gloss black from a car spray shop . The results are amazing .
