Rats, I didn't clip your responses on wallpapering

About, oh two years ago, I got the grand idea to wallpaper a couple of walls in our dining area. And finally we're actually going to do it. At that time I posted a question asking for your hints, received MANY excellent responses and don't you know, I didn't clip them and they've fallen off the list.

Would you mind doing it again? We've never wallpapered before and want to decrease potential insanity over the task. Here's what I bought: http://www.swdecorating.com/default.asp?fm=/easychange.asp: described as pre-pasted and it's an "easychange" wallpaper.

Just everything of course!

There are tips on the Sherwin Williams page about hanging wallpaper but I want to hear things from the forum because to me it's more "real." Out of sheer laziness I don't even know if there's a special paste to use to adhere it to the wall. What tools do we need? I seem to recall from my childhood that some kind of a stick/bar is used to smooth it once up. Since we're only doing two walls we only have one corner--any suggestions? Best part, the house is over 150 years old, not level or plumb so that adds another challenge--or not; but what do I know?

just get a cheap air gun with decent power, meaning FPS (feet per second). have fun shooting just don't shoot into neighbors yards or anything. and only shoot at rats. I love squirrels but rats do alot of damage. They've damaged my bird feeders by chewing threw the plastic and even found them inside my outdoor grill. YUCK! need to get rid of these dang rats, and i need a new grill. I've had a couple rats come out in broad daylight on my pool deck looking for bird seed. Man it's disgusting. I don't mind squirrels and birds, but rats....let me put it this way, they drag their tails in their own urine. lol so remember folks, don't ever grab a rat by the tail. in fact, don't touch any rat with your bare hands.

Tame, That's wild! I'm guessing that although your husband refuses to go for 'family counseling' you are probably the one who has the most responsibility for this child as far as parenting goes. You need to give your husband an ultimatum, either he goes to family couseling with you or the child goes back to her mother or into a foster home. You should not have to parent this child without help. If it was me I'd put him AND his daughter out the door! Good Luck!

My ex-boyfriend was a hoarder, and so was his mom. He said his mom didn't have many toys growing up, so she bought them for herself as an adult. My ex wanted for nothing, so I am guessing his hoarding was learned behavior. I knew I could not live with that (we were "serious" and dated for 5 years). It was one of the reasons we broke up. I have heard that his now-wife was able to help him get rid of things . . .he'll probably always have too much for my taste, but I figure she was the absolute right person for him if she was able to get him to let things go. I couldn't even get him to get rid of a ticket stub! My parents both grew up in the time of the depression (one born '26 and one born in '32) and neither one of them were hoarders, though I do remember my dad liking a well-stocked kitchen. I have a strong reaction to clutter and mess . . .always have. When I was younger (under 12) I could not stand to study in my room when it was messy. I have such a sense of peace when things are clean. BUT, I am not always organized or efficient enough to keep things that way. I wrote about this on another thread, that it is the logistics of actually getting rid of things that is a problem vs. my not wanting to get rid of things. I also sometimes don't know "what" to get rid of. For example, we keep getting rid of children's baby clothes thinking we are done, but then we have another child . . .last week DH and I decided we are going to just get rid of what we have because much of it has been past back/forth with my sister for the last 10 years. This baby is going to get new things, and we will have less to store. One of my biggest issues is other people's things. I got rid of 99% of my knicknacks (much to my mom's dismay-- she tried to stop me from it) and other items. But, my husband's and children's items are different story. I never know what I can/should not get rid of.

Lydia, thank you for letting us know. I'm glad you enjoyed your reread of GWTW. It's a helluva a story, in my opinion, in so many respects. My apologies for not responding to your post just previous to the last one. I didn't finish Bridget Jones's Diary. I couldn't stand her whinging -- what was it, ten years ago? -- so I doubt I would tolerate her any better now. I have no idea if future readers will think she's "so 1990s/2000s", or whatever dismissive phrase they invent. But I think you're right in noting the similarities between Bridget and her ilk and the snarkiness of the characters in Georgy Girl. Whatever is trendy in a contemporary novel is bound to be old hat to successive generations of readers -- even when they like vintage styles. Something you, or someone, said above (or elsethread) struck me: (paraphrasing, since I can't locate it to quote directly) readers like historical novels written in their own times better than preceding generations' contemporary novels because the sensibilities have been redone to suit what the writers and readers want those times and the characters to have been.The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that's right. Let me guess about Summer of '42: Are the readers nowadays hostile about the young boy losing his virginity to the older woman? I can see how that would be a 'modern' take. It sure didn't seem to be awful to Raucher's character in 1942...Hermie, I think was his name. And I don't think it was considered obscene back in the early 1970s when the book came out, but we have become sensitized to the 'issue' of cougars since. (Even the term cougar is ugh-worthy!)

Read the directions that came with the wallpaper to determine which wallcovering primer to use and which paste. The primer is the most important thing because it makes hanging easier and removal later easier as well.

There are no apparent directions that came with the wallpaper. I ordered it via telephone from the local store after having received a sample at home months ago and it was shipped to my house. There were no separate directions in the packaging. I haven't opened a roll yet, could there be directions on the under-side of the label?

Usually, there is a sheet of directions inside the wallpaper roll. If not, perhaps you can look for manufacturers directions online on their website. If not, I believe that Shieldz is a good general purpose wallcovering primer. It is made by Zinnser.

I was papering a bath for a friend after he had tried doing it himself. As he watched me carefully work around the built in vanity, he said: "So the trick is to be really patient"! That would be my most important suggestion. Make small cuts and clips as you are trying to fit the paper around various obstacles like windows, doors, fireplaces, bathtubs, etc. Hope that helps.

Goggle it, there are many sites that give you and idea. Take my word, it is NOT as easy as it looks( to do properly) I did this for a living for 20 years. Here is a site to get you started( disregard the hideous paper selection)

Thank you all for the input; I've bookmarked the site christophern. We do appreciate the difficulty of the task--hence the questions. The only obstacle, other than ourselves and the crookedness of the house, is the thermostat to go around and that's coming off the wall for the papering so it doesn't require rafor's skill! Other than that it's just the two interior walls.
