In-Counter Knife Storage -- Love it!

Look what I came home to tonight! I'm so thrilled- it's better than I imagined it. The contractor did a great job fulfilling my request to put a knife slot into my lowered walnut butcherblock counter.

And it's right next to the stove!

I guess you could call my storage for curling iron, hair dryer, etc an appliance garage of sorts. I have a "linen tower" on either end of the vanity with an upper and a lower door. There is an outlet inside each one for all the plug-in stuff which is stored on the shelf just under the outlet at counter height. I also keep my clean bath linens, makeup/toiletries, extra soap, shampoo & tp in there. Then we have a bank of 3 - 7" drawers & 1 - 10" drawer. Hairbrushes are in 1 drawer, dental care in another, my pretty soap/bath salt stash in the 3rd one & the bottom one holds various sunscreens and aloe gel (I burn so easy--I need to buy stock in sunscreen and aloe--LOL!). Our linen towers are 18" wide, but we definitely could have gone with a 15" and been just fine. 12" would be pushing it IMO, but it could be done if you just didn't have the extra 3" of space. You didn't say if you kids were girls or boys. Girls will obviously have more "stuff" in their baths. Boys, on the other hand, not so much. For our boys, we did 36" vanities with small 9" tall drawers on either side of the sink and a cabinet below. They put their hairbrush and shaving stuff in one drawer and dental care items in the other. Extra towels, soap, & shampoo are kept in the cabinet underneath. Extra tp would fit under there too, but I couldn't bring myself to install a tp holder on the side of the beautiful vanity, so I bought them tp stands that hold up to 3 extra rolls in addition to the one that is in use. I was thinking of the hutch idea as well. Put a pantry height at the opposite end from the oven and use the space between like a hutch. If you're into wine you could make this a wine bar or coffee area. As I thought about my own kitchen I realized I designed it with a landing area next to the oven and we NEVER use it like that LOL. We always open the oven and carry the hot stuff over to next to the sink or set on the cooktop for some reason. I guess it's just the natural traffic flow of the kitchen. So now the section next to my wall ovens is the beverage area when we have gatherings. I also like the idea someone mentioned for a laptop or charging area. You could hide some outlets up under the upper cabinets or do a couple of those pop up electrical outlets. This post was edited by bocron on Wed, Feb 5, 14 at 13:02

granite counter-top seams ... are we being too picky?

These are my pics of my countertops placed Friday June 22, 2018. I cried looking at these seams. It looks so cheap. Fabricator explains that's the way it comes. I explained that I shouldn't be able to see the seams so clearly. It looks so unprofessional. They ended up taking them back to their warehouse. In hopes they say if it is quality control will try and fix it just to make it look better. Otherwise I will have to pay an additional fee for them to come out again to install. I just don't know what to do and if still looks the same. This is the first time I've replaced my counters in 24 years. I don't and can't live with it. looking at this for another 24 years. It looks so cheap and it really was not it's a lot of money to me. I hope fingers crossed that they will fix this problem. They never told me that there would be such seams. I thought the edges were done by a machine and it would be all one piece. I have read up on this and now understand there are seams. But now I do know that they should not look like this. If they are good fabricator you shouldn't be able to see them so clearly. I will find out next week what happens.

We have a friend who has a walk-all-around work surface (hate to call it an island, more like sawhorses with curtains underneath) made of two old large butcherblock countertops so there's a seam at back, parallel to long sides. His knives are kept in slit at the seam area--not sure if he routed it out or not. No special slot for any single knife, just dump them in the long groove. He loves to roast large cuts of meat Renaissance style, so that surface is his butchershop as well as his slicing and serving spot. That product featured above with the bamboo sticks is very interesting, but would have same problem as other knife blocks--the distance to pull up before moving laterally with the knife. My problem is the desire to locate the knives deep to back of countertop, under the uppers. I have two well-used blocks, but have to pull them to front of counter before lifting knives upward. Angled blocks suck up too much precious space.

I envy your dinners, Trailrunner! Someday I'll take some kitchen in action shots, now that we're up and running (tho far from finished!)

I have an image in my head of a deranged cook reaching for the knives whilst saying, "But didn't you know-- I am EVILBUNNIE!" (now Psycho music plays).

That is so cool! What a nice functional touch to have in your kitchen. Looks like you are getting close to done. And I hope that everyone is really nice to you because it looks like you could grab those knives in a heartbeat.

Writersblock, the black walnut is from the nice people on ebay that I mentioned in a previous post. They were much faster, more responsive and CHEAPER than the local John Boos distributors. You can find them on ebay as seller elaineart1901, they advertise cutting boards but will do custom counters up to four feet long. Perfect for me.

And yes morton5, I can now threaten anyone in my kitchen with grievous bodily harm in a split second.

Did you know mayhem literally means cutting the limbs off a person? Just sayin'.

And while the bulk of the kitchen is done, I learned the hard way that it's virtually impossible to design cabinets for a space that hasn't been built yet, so I'll be coming to the boards seeking advice for redesigning certain cabinet areas, like around my fridge, and in a blank spot where I thought I wanted negative space, and now I think just looks -- unfinished or something.
