Freezer cleanup = Food Morph

I'm feeling so smug! LOL

Thursday we defrosted the big freezer which gave me a chance to do a reality check on what was in there.

3 small freezer bags of last years roasted red peppers plus some frozen homemade chicken broth morphed into 4 litres of Roasted Red Pepper Soup.

One smallish turkey morphed into dinner last night, enough leftovers for a couple of turkey pot pies, turkey soup and 6 litres of stock to put back in the freezer.

A pile of vintage beef bones, short ribs and some frozen chopped onions morphed into 8 litres of beef stock and a yet to be determined amount of brown sauce.

A slab of country style ribs and a container of homemade BBQ sauce ended up as a cheater version of BBQ pulled pork.

Still mulling over some of last years frozen rhubarb, I'm thinking sauce for ice cream. Also have to deal with a very big bag of blueberries. Might just have to do some baking and stick it all back in the freezer! LOL

Clive just laughs at my smugness. He says I just swapped one set of frozen stuff for another set...true but it beats tossing !

Way to go , Sharon ! Doc came home the other day with a small chest freezer for the 12 x 16 ft shed he just put up on the side lawn-- said it's for "venison"-- yeah well there's still some of last year's "kill" in the main freezer--along with lord knows what else--it got away from me this summer and I'm sure my "morph" is going to be a big trash can full of way too old packages( unlabeled-- he never labels stuff-- just vacumn packs & tosses in the freezer). Wish I had the ambition to do it all your way.

FOAS, I always admire your passion in the precision of mathematical exactitude, However, I do not feel that topics in food discussions necessarily lend themselves to constricted legal lawyerly approaches. I realized and did state and did apologize to the OP that I was not directly addressing her question, because I had a point to make that's related to the topic. I also feel that the issue of a FP for a single person was missed by many posters. That possibly will cause the OP to make the wrong choice. I am very puzzled that even for a family of four you have not that much use for a FP, and you feel it is wrong for me to suggest to the OP that there may be other options? After all, I never said not to get one, I am puzzled that you feel it is wrong to suggest to others to study options. I have not said a FP has no application for some single person who has physical limitations, or food preferences suitable for having a FP, such as for olychick, I have not said a FP cannot perform well chopping, slicing, shredding, mixing, ------ There is another whole aspect about the art of food preparation not using machinery, as in Japanese cooking, and the pleasure of tactile relationship with your food. but that is a little more off topic for this thread. To sum up the changes from a week ago, it's now "Light up one big counter" and "Make the drawers a.b.a.p." rosieo, no matter what you do, you have a handle on the big things. I don't know if you will be happier with the range here or there; it may be a minor thing compared to all the other things you have figured out. In your set of images, photos 1 to 5 show the kitchen is in a windowless corner of the house. With a mirror on the wall you will get more light into the kitchen, coming from another angle. This makes a difference. ((B.t.w. Photos 1 to 5 make me think the footprint of the house is still in flux: I saw a storage area behind the pantry.)) Knowing now what I now know about your house, I would go to ikea for wood counters, for the price (way less than stone) and quality. Nobody has ever said anything bad about them. With the money saved, you can buy more of other things. If you have the money, you could have two single dishdrawers. When open to full drawer extension (or partially), they take up less space than a 30"high dishwasher panel. And, you cannot hit your shin on them. If you are certain that dishes will often go first to the sink (+disposer) before going to the dishwasher, you could justify putting the sink closer to the end, and the dishwasher on the other side of the sink. 500mm drawers If you go with the layout now shown in photo #10, know this: Your dead space corner could be reduced in size, if your counters were only e.g. 23.5" on top of 21" cabinets. Ikea drawers only need 21" space from front to back. Ikea 500mm length drawer slides are identical to the current model of Blum 500mm length drawer slides, and the drawers are almost identical, with an Ikea soft close damper added. I have them. I also have some of the longest possible Blum drawers: they're more spacious, but not a way way great thing to have absolutely. (p.s. length in this paragraph is the length of the gliders = depth of cabinet = distance front to back). If you went with the range-at-end, and then traded the range for a smaller one, you would have an easier time getting in and out of the corner it blocks. Is exhaust venting in your kitchen plan?

Carol, What I was trying to say is that there maybe different ways of 'centeralizing' the sink if that is a desired feature to make things look right for you. I gave three different ways just as examples. First one is to look at the sink and the two DWs as a whole, then the tendency is to put the sink in the middle and one DW on eitheir side. The backsplashed section reinforced this idea somewhat. Second one is to align the sink with the island. Aligning central line of sink with that of the island may not be feasible. But the option B has the sink right edge aligned with that of the island pretty well. Third one is to take that whole wall including the corner section as a reference (which I estimated to be about 9ft wide). Then I realized that the sink in option A is already at center position. To pursue that idea, you may need to consider how to place the high cabinets to make it look right. I think there may be a good opportunity there as there is a large window there. If you can expose the front side of the corner and tie it to the rest of the wall, i.e., the corner food storage cabinet opens downward, and there is no ceiling height high cabinet between the window and the food storage, it may work out OK. I am not very clear about the vertical arrangement of the cabinets and what is why I said 3D arrangement of the cabibnets to acheive the concept and 3D rendering to examine how it look like would be helpful if you like to see more in the line of ahieving Option A DWs side by side with sink still being at a central location. We too will be having a layout very close to yours (someday). I'm a stickler about symmetry too so I totally understand where you're coming from about the sink being in the middle. Having the entire kitchen in symmetry and only the sink off center seemed off. The more I thought about it though we finally moved it off-center like Taggie suggested with the DW on the end with the sink next to it. Your eye will naturally fall to the back wall with it's perfect symmetry of windows and vent hood. The sink is in a sense out of sight since it's on the flat surface and only takes up about 6 square feet of flat space. Your eye mostly goes to the vertical surfaces of the room (windows, cabinets, vent hoods) and secondary to the flat surfaces (cooktops, counters). The only thing that will be noticed much will be the skinny stem of the faucet. Even a goose neck is small in comparison to everything else that is going on in the kitchen. I will have almost a 10' wide island, with a 24" DW, 36" sink, 18" pull-out trash, and a 36" base drawers. I can't tell if you have a pull-out for your trash on either side but perhaps you do. Bottom line, I would move the sink and make sure I had a pull-out trash.

Hey Sharon, you have every right to feel smug in a job well done! Morphing is a necessity for me. Clive won't be laughing when he's eating some of your delicious Roasted Red Pepper Soup, and you can feel especially smug when you POOF it some busy night. I just updated my freezer inventory, and am getting reading to do one myself in preparation for the days leading up to Thanksgiving. I will think of you as my role model!

Sharon, I'm proud of you. I didn't do any freezer morphing this weekend, I just took 210 pounds of fresh grass fed beef and dumped it in on top of everything else. The lid wouldn't shut so I can to can a batch of beef stock, but that's the extent of the morphing.

I've had the flu and haven't been cooking or eating to speak of, but I told Elery the beef would be coming. So what did he do? He brought 10 pounds of fish and a whole turkey with him. I told him there was no freezer room, so he smoked it all and now it's in the fridge. I think it's going to "morph" into Amanda's freezer or her supper, one or the other....

My freezer desperately needs morphing!! But there is no room....all is chock full!!
So that bag of chicken parts will have to stay until I eat some of last summer's tomato sauce.
And those habaneros will have to stay unmorphed until I get some get up and go!
And I really need to morph my dried goods drawer...we have frijoles negro, lentils, split peas, pea beans all needing to morph into something taking up a lot more room!

I didnÂt morph anything but did straighten up my freezers without finding any surprises. The local VonÂs had 7 bone roasts on sale for .98 per pound so bought the limit twice. After trimming and grinding I ended up with almost 25 pounds all packaged up in 1 and 2 pound bags. I still have all the bones and trimming to make stock sometime this week.

We're getting 1/4 of a cow today, so I'll do a freezer inventory while moving stuff to make room for that.
I have got to start working on planning menus from what we already have in the freezer and pantry. We have more than enough food to feed us for at least a year, but I always seem to have a hankerin' for something for dinner that we don't have on hand!

Sigh. I have to do the same. I just cannot throw away the carcass of our roasted chickens....how many containers of stock do I have in the freezers? Ack....

Just yesterday (while I was reading this thread, actually) my dtr pulled out a bag of frozen carcasses and gasped, "MOM! What's THIS?" So last night we had a gigantic pot of chicken/turkey soup that was delicious. Made enough to feed us for days!

Every several months I pull out the odds and ends and make something I can never duplicate. It's like a game. Stuff is usually good, I just can't duplicate it.
