"Window must be at least 7/8"D for inside mount, 1-5/8"D for flush inside mount. " this is what's written in the description, it doesn't seem like they can be outside mounted, you'd see the side of the mechanism.

There must be a heading for the locking mechanism, they will definitely have to be screwed in to be operable, they are not on a rod,

Outside mounted roman shades have a side piece of fabric ...about 3 to 4" long and the width of the board which hides all the mechanism etc. (this is for custom made roman shades) sorry..I've never looked at one from JCP so don't know what they look like on the side exactly.

You would probably want to do the outside mount and you'd measure an inch or so past your trim to make sure it drapes nicely and covers the trim.

I would think that if you want to lower and raise the shade, a magnetic rod will not take the pressure of pulling and lowering the cords. I have the same doors leading to my patio room and we have wood blinds on them and did drill into the steel doors. It sounds pretty permanent to drill into steel, but you're always going to have something on those doors right? So whether it's a blind, a shade or a curtain, you can use the same drill holes forever.

If you want to use the magnetic rods, I think the only thing that would work well would be a sheer or curtain fabric that would you have on a rod at each end of the door. Can't think of what they're called off hand! I had them for a while on the skylights by my front door.

Mitch - I must have read that wrong last night. I was thinking you could mount them outside. Interesting. I'm pretty sure it's at least 7/8" D inside. Could I get away with using the 23"? Is there room for squish? I've never looked at roman shades up close.

As far as mouting them into the door, after thinking some more it's really no difference than putting holes in your wall etc. The door could always be patched later in life right? Odds are once we hang something up we'll always have something there. But now I don't believe I can use these if I were going to do that. . .

I like these too and they're outside mount. 27" wide is the shortest width though...

Just an FYI on the magnetic rod thing. We have steel doors too and I tried 2 different kinds of magnetic rods but neither kind would hold strongly enough even for a lightweight french door curtain. Every time I opened or closed the door, both sides would fall off. I eventually glued the top ones on. I don't really know why I thought good, sticky glue would be better than just drilling into the steel. I haven't tried to take them off for any reason yet but I imagine it will leave a mess when I do.

At any rate, before you spend alot on the window decor, you might want to try a magnetic rod and see if you have better luck than I did and maybe come up with a plan B.

Another option available is a clear panel with mini blinds attached that go right over your existing window. I think I saw them at Lowes.

I believe I'm going to go with an outside mount. The beads on the 1st one would probably be bad with the cats anyhow!

I am still curious about the squish thing with an inside mount.

Your valance looks great in your kitchen!!

Here is another option I have thought about for my kitchen doors......the cellular shades on the doors with a cute valance on top of the cellular shade stack. I love looking out of my windows during the day but like the option for privacy at night. You could do the same valance as above your sink on your doors - with the cheap cellulars underneath (I got some from Lowes).

I think the Olive Branch is going to look great in there!!

Scooby I just now saw this. I never thought of that. I'm assuming celluar shades are just pull and roll up type? Never had them. Do you mount them on the inside?

What color would you get? White?

I think I would tire of roman shades. I was thinking about a rod with curtains but I don't think I'd like that either. Not to mention my computer sits in the corner at the moment and needs to stay there for now. It would be in the way of the drapes. Plus I think they would get all wrinkly looking from being pulled back during the day.
