Backsplash started - too grey?

I was mildly stressed about my backsplash selection. I chose an arrabesceta (sp?) honed marble tile because it has a beige-y undertone that I hoped would tie in the warm tones of the floor and cabs with the cool tones of the s/s appliances.

I came home from work tonight to have the backsplash project underway. (BTW, it has been really fun to come home from work to discover works in progress or appliances having been installed. Or, my granite having been installed 2 days earlier than scheduled).

I'm thinking a beig-y, greyish taupe paint color should tie this all together, no?

The backsplash will also go here, up to the bottom of the bottom shelf (unless you tell me that's a horrible idea and I will then dither about that decision ;)):

It's great! Seriously. I wouldnt' have responded if I thought it was terrible. (or I would have found a diplomatic way to tell you "Yikes! That's bad!")

oh mayflowers forgot to say that I like the idea of adding cabinets to back of peninsula area but was also thinking of having two backless bar stools with black leather seats there as well. Will have to think about the wainscoating and now that I look closely the area could use an update and it is scuffed up. the more we look the more we see that needs help with this house Ugh thanks so much Here is the living room, my carpenter is fashioning a pine wood free floating mantle as we speak, it will have oil on it and natural tones. We have sofa facing the fireplace that's a thin cordoroy material in a light blue/green and plan to have an accent chair against the other wall (the staircase wall) with perhaps some type of server or china cabinet over there, dining area is too small for china cabinet but might be able to have a behind the sofa credenza (for more storage) we also plan to have an area rug in front of the sofa. I am looking for a gray one with texture if I can find one. what do you think of those ideas? Right now the dining area has a work table we're using till we find what we want lol

Hi Katie, Demo starts tomorrow, so no pics on progress yet, but I'll post when I have some. I'm working a little bit with a KD, and doing the rest myself with cabinetmaker. KD suggested open shelving like in the inspiration pic (but in stainless, specifically). I think it would stress me out though, lol! Having all of my bottles and stuff right out there (the range area is the focal point to basically my whole downstairs living area). My pantry rarely looks fabulous, and I'd be moving the pantry out into the open. So, I think we'll be making the vertical column things on either side of the mantel style range area into pull-out shelves for sheet pans, spices, small bottles, etc. I considered the open shelving with a pretty display of white bowls and dishes, but then I'd lose the storage space for the stuff I really need at my fingertips. Feel free to email me, too, if you want to exchange more ideas. It's a fun process!

If your choice were only between to 2 you originally posted, I'd choose the one on the right--the cream one. From the photos it looks like it works very well with your quartzite. The gray one is "off" just enough not to look pleasing. However, as many have noted, either one is more difficult to clean than a smooth surface. What sort of cook are you--very neat or more devil-may-care? If you are very neat and do not splash much when you cook, then you may get away with the split-faced marble, but if you are a more exuberant cook, you may find it a challenge to clean. The mother of pearl is very formal and quite busy, so it's going to compete with the counter tops as well. Personally, I would use a smooth crackle tile in a tan/beige tone to work with your quartzite. Simple is always good.

they sound interesting enough to me, being crackled and having variation. larger size might work..what size you consider? Gray is already considered dated lol. Makes no sense to me personally as all this dated thing is a new concept I'm still struggling with-how a color can be dated? but in terms of what happens in trends etc-it's on its way out, yes. they move into warmer tones. they're still into greiges for now to bridge between things a bit. white is becoming big as a neutral. wood stains are making a big comeback. this update on trends can go on and on but i'm sure you can find thousand threads here discussing it so i'll make it short. if you're really worried-it might be you're simply are not attached to a color enough. which is okay, really. then pick off-white. off white is pretty. Even very much so. I like both off whites and grays(I do have preference for much warmer grays though) so I have off whites and warm grays. And many other colors too since I love them too. I commit by choosing something of course,-but it's fine since commitment, paradoxically, is a road to freedom:) But I admit I was also worrying when choosing..well choosing everything except for stuff like toilets etc. Of course one worries, it's a hassle and an expense and you want to love it in the end. So. Try to worry less. If you can remove "dated" from the equation- great. Go with your heart's desire. If no-then ok, take it into equation and don't do gray. Worry less. You did a great job on everything else, so no reason to think your backsplash won't turn out well either. It will.

I love the backsplash tile. I tried for some combos of golden tan and gray myself. Have you chosen a grout color? Maybe that will help tie them better, too. I don't know if it will be right with yours, but Oyster Gray is actually a beigish color grout that we used with some tiles we have in our master bath that have both gray and beige.

Yup, it goes - but you had me worried with your description.

I think rhome is right and make sure you spend time choosing your grout colour carefully.

I agree with regard to the grout, go warm, in the creamy beige family and I think it should be great.

I think it is gorgeous! Grout will make a big difference too. Here's a good suggestion for you. Go buy several bags of grout in different color. They only cost around $10 each. Lay out pieces of scrap tile on a scrap of drywall or plywood and then grout them with your various colors. It makes settling on a final grout color SO much easier!

Thanks so much for your feedback and suggestions. I picked out a grout color about 2 months ago when I first picked this tile. I can't remember what it was. I did talk to my GC this AM and he told me that he's picked up the grout and it's in my kitchen (I'm at work); so, I'm going to take a look at it tonight and if I don't think it's creamy/warm enough, he'll go pick up another color tomorrow AM.

I'll keep you posted.

Hmmm. . . having gotten home and taken a look the color on the picture of the grout mix, which by the way, is tec standard white, I'm not sure it's warm and beige enough. I've taken a picture of the bag, but I'm not sure you'll be able to see it. I'm going to post an SOS post, calling all grout experts . . .

How about also trying out a few accessories and whatever kitchen items you may plan to have out to get a more true look at it? I recently found a small serving platter in an antique store with a dark brown design on an aged white background that I think would look wonderful on your backsplash. I think all those harmonious but subtly different hues are going to come together to give your kitchen design a depth and sophistication that strict matchiness just can't.

I think your tile looks great. It never dawned on me how important the color of the grout is until you posted this question. I think I learn something everyday on this forum.
Also, can you tell me what your floor tile is--I love it.

Thanks, everyone. I'm taking a "mental health day" from work tomorrow and I'm going to head to the tile store in the search of a more beigy grout.

Maureen - thanks! My floor tile is travertine. I'll look up the name and re-post, but I believe it was called Crema something.
