Tile entry way with Laminate?

Hi All! I posted this over on Flooring and haven't gotten much of a response there so I thought I'd try here because I know you all seem more active.

I'm just looking for some opinions and possibly pictures. We will soon be having our entire downstairs done with wood laminate, except for the bathrooms. Our floor guy suggested that we put tile in the front entry way. It's only about a 3' x 4' area so the cost wouldn't be much. I was thinking it may be a good idea since we live in Fl on a dirt road so there is a lot of sand. Has any one else done this and if so how does it look with just a small square of tile against wood laminate? I was thinking it may look nice with a small decorative border. Or would it just look better to keep it all the laminate. If anyone has opinions and/or pictures of their entry way that shows this I sure would appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

I don't know which way this will lead you - because my entryway is not terribly exciting - but we have a small marble tile landing that was there before we put in our floor - so we just kept it. My husband has not put the trim pieces down yet. It seems kind of natural to me to have an entry that is set apart from the rest of the floor. Hope this helps!

I would keep it all laminate and use a good entry rug with a very good pad underneath it. Two different materials at the entryway is too busy, imo. You also have problems with the point of contact between the tile and laminate... if it is not perfect, it's visible. I would opt for the cleaner, more seamless look afforded by using just one flooring material.

How about some elegant black iron scroll work? There are scads of varieties and they are often the perfect solution for a wall that needs that certain "something". (The photos are from my home.) I recommend choosing art that a) reflects your interests and b) makes you happy every time you see it. You said you can't your hang travel visas and martinis, but why not? You could frame your travel visas and arrange them under a large matte. For the martinis, you could either buy a painting or print of them or literally frame some martini classes in a shadow box. You might also consider vintage travel posters from places you love or that you've already been to. Your home is very nice!

Funny but none of your kitchens in you ide books have tile floor. IMO wood floor to match the rest is the best to do and I am totally confused with all the tile you show, what are all the ptterened tile . You are asking about floor so just show the tile you are choosing from for the floor. If some of the others are in your kitchen then show them separately. BTW 12 x24 tile is my go to for floor tile all the time.

Thank you @kempek01. That's kind of what I am thinking. My husband does like it, but I feel it's random. We will figure it out! Insurance will not pay for this, but it's a small area. We have been upgrading the house during this process and so far happy with the changes.

What color will compliment my very yellow warm tiles in entry way?

I love the white trim and wainscoting though as a bright white, it might be skewing the floors more yellow. But I might keep it because of the lovely contrast. The current wall paint is echoing the yellows in the floor, so a simper thing is to start pulling some paint chips like the more neutral buff and cream colors in the tile. At some point you’ll need larger samples but you need to start somewhere.

MCPS, that is almost exactly the same amount we are thinking about tiling so your picture helps give a good perspective. Thanks so much!

KSWL, I agree that it may look too busy with more than one material. To make matters worse, this area is also the landing to our carpeted stairs so it would be THREE materials meeting up there.

Hmmmmm, certainly gives me some things to ponder. If anyone else has input or pictures please don't hesitate. Thanks so much for the responses!

I would keep it all one and use the laminate throughout to maintain a smooth, seamless look as KSWL suggest... Also, when we put tile down we were told that there is nothing worse for tile than sand, so that's an added concern for you.

I agree with kswl. A rug that cooridinates nicely with the room will have a nice impact. Plus, you can probably wash it and easily replace the rug if it shows a lot of wear (whereas the flooring itself would be a major pain to replace when it shows the wear.
