Need some help on a school assignment

I am trying to figure out which activities go best with various age groups. I have created a Survey Monkey list and was hoping that some of you could help me. The like is below.

***DDR = Dance, Dance, Revolution***

****DDR and active gaming are video games that make you get up and move, similar to many of the Wii games****

I have to ask where you can possibly live where you are not within a few miles of a feed store? Most cities grew up around the feed stores that used to be way out of town. Now would be a good time to supplement your Gardenweb profile with information about your location so we don't have to ask in the future. If you look at the ingredients in organic fertilizer, you will find those same ingredients in Ol' Roy dog food at Wal-Mart. Dog food works but you can do what you want. Scott's organic should be as good as the next organic. Here is the basic, 123 of lawn care. 1. Water deeply and infrequently. This is your biggest tool against weeds. Weed seeds need nearly continual moisture, just like grass seed. If you water a little bit every day, the result is a moist surface - perfect for starting seeds (weeds). If you water once a week (during the hottest part of summer) and let the surface dry out, the weed seed cannot sprout. 2. Mow at your mower's highest setting. This is the second most important thing you can do to prevent weeds. Tall grass puts too much shade on the surface so that any seed that does sprout will not get enough sunlight to take root. If you mulch mow you will return all the nitrogen in the grass back to the soil to be recycled. Tall grass does not grow any faster than short grass. Tall grass provides cooler soil underneath which leads to reduced evaporation. 3. Regularly fertilize with whatever fertilizer you like. Organic is easier because it is so hard to make a mistake. The type of fertilizer you use has less than 10% effect on weeds. It is good for color and organic will really help the soil microbes. You can fertilize with organics anytime the soil temp is above 50 degrees F. If you live south of Dallas, any day is good. For weeds I suggest a Weed Hound if they have a tap root. If you have grassy weeds, they might disappear when you start letting the grass get taller. If you have broadleafed weeds, St Aug cannot compete with them. You will have to pluck them out. If you have to spray with something organic, start with household vinegar as a foliar spray, not a soil drench. Try to keep it off the leaves of the St Aug. Most St Aug weeds pull out very easily. If you decide to use a chemical weed killer, the best way to coexist with an organic program is to use something like a Weed-b-Gone spray on each weed rather than applying granules to the entire lawn. I could tell you that corn gluten meal works as a preemergent but I don't believe it. In fact I don't believe any preemergent works. Even if you wanted to use CGM, I think it is too late in your area (wherever your area is).

Starting school greenhouse... help needed

Ernie, I'm a newbie to greenhouse gardening, and not all that experienced with veggies yet, so will leave it to the experts ... though, offhand, I would think cool weather crops like lettuces and peas would do well. Also, I would try to find plants that meet the following criteria: 1. not too fussy about growing conditions 2. disease & pest resistant (you'll probably want to keep pesticide applications to a minimum) 3. are generally familiar to and/or liked by the students (are you really going to get "into" growing brussels sprouts if you hate em?) 4. fun to grow - colors, aromas, textures ... uses (like gourds, for example ... which could lead to another whole project) If there is a strong desire by one or more students to try something particularly challenging, I'd say OK, in a separate area, as long as it doesn't compromise the curriculum or safety of the greenhouse occupants (both plant and human). That emotional connection is such a powerful tool. I've said a lot more than I intended, but I'm so thrilled to hear about your project and enthused for you and your students ... 11 years on a board of education will do that. Please be sure to document your project and its impact in writing and in pictures. It's a wonderful keepsake, another way to involve the students ... and you just may decide to apply for a grant or submit your project for recognition on a local or county level, or higher. Many County and State School Boards Associations have annual competitions, and I know the National School Boards Association does. There may be an opportunity to exhibit at the State level or higher - a real boost for the students, school and the community as a whole. Hey, my Minnesota hands still get cold when it's in the 40's! Besides I'm a native Floridan so that's my excuse. ;-) They were really THIN gloves. Right before the workshop, central Florida was having a pretty good cold snap, it got down in the 20's on the morning I arrived. On the boat we started out early and it could get a bit chilly, especially when we were moving. The secret to hand holding is really just common sense - hold the lens up only as long as you need to. Sounds like you're already doing that. ;-)

I don't have time to do the whole survey. So just glanced at it..
They use a WII in our school district with 4 DDR heavy duty pads per PE teacher at each Elementary. Then dots on the floor behind each one to use as their "base" then the take turns rotating through the rows so each child gets atleast one time on the pads.
I was in the gym on Tuesday doing photos..and she did that with 3-5 grade. The 1-2 grades had gymnastic ribbons and were twirling, writing their names and numbers in the air and dancing about with them.

Any way sorry I can't fill out your survey right now..maybe later..

I'm not understanding this survey. I only looked at the first page and it asks respondents to try to guess what different people at different ages would like to do. Why not just ask those who are in that particular age group what they would like to do and calculate the results? Of what good would it be for someone such as myself ( middle aged old lady) to take a guess at what teens like to do, or preschoolers these days like, or even what other adults like. For instance, I am an adult but I hate sports. I know other adults who love sports. What would/should I check off on the survey box where it is asked to rate activities that I feel adults would like?

Dilly_Dally- I will be asking the actual groups but I have to develop the survey first and many of the people at the KT have kids in the various age groups.

I don't have immediate access to a wide range of people except here so I am asking for those who are interested to offer suggestions.

Terri, If I had a PE class like the one you visited, I might have had more fun!

I found the questions too broad. For example the definition of dancing is far different for a pre-schooler and an adult though both might enjoy it.

Most of the activities listed are not up to a pre-schooler's or even some kindergartener's skill levels to truly enjoy and some are counter-productive to learning.

Crafts are another one. Young children like to make things to show off (something to take home to mommy or daddy), a teen girl would like a craft that can be used and a boy might enjoy model making. An adult may enjoy crafting for either alone time or for socializing.

Does reading mean reading for oneself, being read to or reading to someone else? Again the answers to the original list would reflect the answers to these questions.

I would love to answer your survey but I'm afraid I'm too analytical.

:-) Wildchild... I know exactly what you mean. The reason a person might enjoy the activity isn't important to me- just knowing that people in their age bracket typically enjoy the activity is enough.

Most surveys only focus on a very small age/development range because it can be so hard to look across the age ranges. The problem with different surveys for different groups is that you have low reliability and validity for assessing them as parts of a family group. If I can develop a survey that is of the same design and essentially the same questions, I might be able to overcome this hurdle.

(or at least i can make it through the dissertation process!).

thanks to all of you who have completed and/or offered suggestions here. Five people have completed the survey so far. I will share the scores after the weekend.
