Did they take a good look at his colon in the ct scan? My dh ended up with abscessed diverticulitis with similar symptoms, though they came on more gradually. I'm so sorry that life has been very difficult for you lately; I feel badly for you. Is your dh having any luck getting interviews, if you don't mind my asking? I know it's extremely tough right now to do that. Also, I've been wondering how your mother is, again, if you don't mind my asking.

So glad to hear your DH is on the mend, and that his pain has gone away!

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts and words. I just had to get it off my chest. I didn't want to take it out on him. He couldn't help feeling the way he was feeling, but I am burnt out. I have nothing left. I keep wondering, where and when is all this going to end.

sjerin - Thanks for asking and I don't mind at all. DH has applied for everything out there that he is qualified for, but the problem is there isn't much out there. A lot of companies have hiring freezes or having layoffs or both. My Mom is hanging in there. She has some good days and some not so good days. She still is in the nursing home because she has a cast on her leg from her hip to her ankle so needs around the clock care. One good thing is they had her 91st birthday celebration and my two brothers that didn't make it to her 90th were there. One even came with his wife and grown kids. She had a good time. Wish I could have been there too.

What a bummer!! TRY to remember his job is looking as hard for him as he is for it. It really, really helped me stay sane-ER when I very badly needed one...I was the breadwinner because DH had big time heart problems.

Wow. So sorry to hear about DH's pain, but glad he's better now. I understand the need to get things off the chest, too.

A similar thing happened to my DH 10 years ago, and it WAS appendicitis, with a perforated appendix which caused him to be in the hospital for 4 days.

Bet you were in the same hospital - Dominican? I remember DH not getting much attention until his agonizing groans and hunched body on the floor disturbed everyone in the waiting room.

Idea for your DH: there's a program called Helping Hands run by the city or county that hooks up contractors and handymen or just talented, skilled labor to help with elderly, physically challenged, and low income people who need help with simple fixes like replacing a switch or lightbulbs, replacing stair rails and rotten wood, and other such home projects. Maybe DH could help others with his DIY skills. Low pay if any, but he'd get out of the house!

mtnwomanbc - Thanks I will tell him about Helping Hands. I hate ERs but especially Dominican Hospital ER. I went to it once when DS was little and you wait forever. That is why we went to one of those doctors that you don't need an appt. to but just walk in. DH's doctors are over the hill in Mt. View by work. And where can you get medical care at 8PM other then the ER. DH was hoping the doctor would say it was nothing, tell him to take some over the counter medicine and go home. But that doctor was trying to cover his butt in case it was an emergency. We should have gone straight to the ER. Sorry to hear about your DH's appendicitis. It could have been that so that is why we were there.

Boy when it rains it pours doesn't it? You certainly have a full plate.

I'm glad it wasn't appendicitis and hope your DH is feeling better soon. I had a mystery pain like that a few years back and the doctor said it might be something as simple as a grain of food caught in a pocket. (diverticulitis) Doubled over in pain for about 3 days I was.

The job market is horrible around here. DH has missed two layoff bullets in the last 4 months so far. Last time he was out of work was almost 6 years ago and it took him almost 15 months to get "real" work in his field. Over-qualified they call it meaning they want someone half the age to work for half the wage hired by a fresh off the campus kid that has no clue what the job entails.

Clare even in these tough times find a way to do something nice for yourself. Coffee or lunch with a friend,alone time or whatever floats your boat. Your mental well being is as important as anyone else's. Even more so since you have to be the rock during these times. Take care of yourself first so you will be more able to care for DS and DH.

wildchild - Sorry you have diverticulitis. DH's mother has that and I know it can be bad. Maybe he has it too and it is just showing up as we age. The docotor did mention that it could be that. What I need, in regards to myself, is a vacation from everything and everyone, but that isn't going to happen especially after we get that hospital bill :>(.

I went for about 2 years for periodic pain. It would last about a coupla' days and then go away. It was gall bladder and that is very painful. Subsequently, I had the gall blader removed and since then, no pain. Operation was a piece 'o cake with only a tiny scar.

Glad to hear your mom is hanging in there, Clare. Those old gals are tough, aren't they?? My mom is 88 and two years after open heart surgery, she is still on her own in the home I grew up in.

This is such a rude question, but do you have any brothers or sisters who are fairly well off and who might consider buying you a ticket to fly out to see your mom? Sure would do you a world of good right now, but I'm not sure how you could ask, unless you get another sibling to broach the subject. I don't know how close you all are-- it sounded like you might be from your previous posts.

We are so lucky that my dh found another job just before the big downturn, but are always holding our collective breath. Is your dh still driving you nuts or have you all settled into a routine? Because mine was still recovering from the surgery I mentioned before, he wasn't as agitated as he might have been and I learned to do errands out at certain times. I know the pickings are slim right now and we can only hope things will improve soon.

I hope you can get even a day away from home to rest and recharge. Now that the sunshine has reappeared, you can at least find a little solace in the garden!

Clare I don't know that I do have diverticulitis. The doctor only mentioned it as a possibility. Perhaps my next colonoscopy will tell. I'm due for a full wellness check-up.

Hope your DH is feeling better today and will soon find employment.
