Zone5ers':

Look out again, National weather service has issued a rare severe weather outbreak alert. Forcast models show the same pattern as June 8th 1974 when 39 tornados ripped across the southern Plains.

Already the outbreak of tornadoes is occurring along the KS ,NB border moving eastward. Central Kansas near Wichita has reported 4 tornados and baseball size hail.

I tied all the tomatoes to thier stakes and even supported the bigger branches by gently tying them up around the stalk. I really don't think trying to block the wind with anything will help as anything the wind can get a hold of could be detrimental. Short of covering the entire plot under straw, I can't think of anything else.

Others may have ideas, please post, this will be from KS ,NB, IA, MO,and I am sure into IL, IN, and WI. We have till about 9:oopm before it lights up around here.

Don't get caught out there when the hail starts tho, softball size hail in Manhatten KS killed a youngster Wend.

Nature will do what she pleases.

If you have lived in the midwest for any time at all you learn to be serious about these alerts.

Keep an eye to the sky and prepare a safe spot in your dwelling with flashlights and battery powered radio. Good Luck, and God Bless

Yep, a small town, Ceresco, was hit about 13 miles from my home. Here in Lincoln we had heavy rains and high winds. Power was out in parts of the city and some flooding has happened. Saturday looks bad. John

I'll be planting Swiss chard & beets, although I usually put them in earlier. August 1st is my target date for Fall peas. Sugar snaps actually seem to do better if they ripen in the fall... much sweeter. The short-vined variety "Sugar Lace" matures quickly, and has better germination if planted now than it does if Spring planted. You can plant carrots now, and I intend to. They won't fully size up, though, unless we have a late Fall (which is certainly possible this year). Late planting seems to avoid most splitting. Carrots can take quite a bit of frost, and really sweeten up when the weather turns cold. Kohlrabi has done well for me direct seeded just about now, since they too will take some frost. Ditto for turnips; but it's hard to keep the bugs off them in this weather. I planted rutabagas a couple weeks ago, and bugs destroyed them shortly after they germinated. I recommend covering any brassica with floating row cover, as an alternative to spraying. This is also the time I dig up & divide my walking onions, since they are in their brief period of dormancy. You can replant them immediately, but I usually let the ground bulbs cure for a month or so, until they begin to sprout.

My roses made it through our mild winter with very little dieback. My problem was deciding how much to prune, since they didn't really need to be pruned. And I did not provide any winter protection this year. Rosenut, I have bushes that the rabbits ate almost to the ground, but I'm not giving up on them. I had two Betty Boops last year that I almost dug up because the rabbits ate them up. I kept them and they were just fine. Charlie, my mom has two fairy roses that have never bloomed and they are going on their fourth year. I'm hoping she will let me get rid of them, but she keeps hoping they will bloom.

when i suggest dormancy .. that is my attempt to reach for 100% success .... obviously ... it can be done otherwise.. though your odds start to go down as the heat of summer approaches ... who are you getting them from in OH??? send me an email thru my members page ... on some plants .. ID is requisite by the seller ... so they delay .... i mean if you had 10,000 pots of JMap's.. they do all look the same w/o leaves .... lol .. and what trees.. specifically are we talking about.. and are you contemplating full sun???? posting this in the tree forum and only discussing trees is very general.. do you have a specific tree in mind ... because conifers are a included in your general question.. and i know you are working with those .... since conifers are trees .. there is no reason all your learning about conifers.. should not translate directly to trees in general .... there really arent a different set of rules for each.. and in theory.. a vast majority of conifers do come with leaves .... why are you thinking differently about trees ???? if the seller is providing a full warranty ... and the seller wishes to delay .. then it is left to relying on the seller .... at some level ... in our zone 5 .. MOST SPRINGS .. mid may .. though a bit late .. should still give you 6 weeks.. before the real heat of summer ... and you should be able to succeed ... its just that sometimes the heat hits early ... blah.. blah ... and at that point.. if in full sun.. you might want to rig up some shade .... and of course.. there is a big difference between a one foot tree in a one gal ... and a 4 foot tree in one gal ... the bigger the tree.. the bigger the stresses.. and the worse the odds get ... heck a one footer can go in a rose cone [or a cardboard box open at the top all summer .. to provide shade] .. and you cant fail ... so your generalized question is leading to frustration because i am not sure what you want to know ... just understand that thru shipping.. planting.. perhaps root surgery .. that the impaired root system MUST be able to provide the requisite water to maintain the leaves on the tree.. and if.. for whatever reason.. the delay in the root system ability to provide the water.. to hold the leaves.. fails.. then the leaves will fail ... though many plants.. but for the transplant .... can releaf .... it would be no different.. but for the transplant.. than if a hard frost or freeze .. hit a tree after leaf out.. and damaged all the leaves ... ken

Four of my five did survive the winter but all died back to the ground. I thought they were dead, but patience paid off and they sent up new growth from the roots. Now with some rain and heat they are catching up and are all between 3-4'. They normally get to be 6-8' by the end of the season when I cut them back to 1-2' in the spring (when the woody part didn't die back.) Don't know the variety since I started them from seed . They all have that light lavender colored flowers. I think they will bloom fine with the rate they are growing now. Store bought butterfly bush never lasted more than a year or two for me, but the seed grown ones are still going strong. The winter sure was hard on things though. My trumpet creeper that normally completely covers and drapes down from our our large willow tree snag that is 15-20' tall has died all the way back the ground. There is just a few feet of growth at the base and it looks pretty sad.

we're in greenwood - half way between lincoln and omaha.

we had a few waves of storm go through every time there was a tornado/severe thunderstorm watch/warning in the area. had hail from ~ 1" to about 3" across (just a few) out on the patio when i looked out in the middle of one.

we had nothing as severe as ceresco. poor people.

the garden has some hail damange. not nearly as much as from the damned RABBITS!

i'd been using blood meal, hot pepper, and garlic. they thumbed their cute, wiggly little noses at me and continued to crop off plants here and there. today we broke down and put chicken wire around the entire garden.

should one make it over the wire and still be in there when i check the garden tomorrow morning, it will be hunting practice for my border terriers.

yea-- my heart out to all the people this weekend across the northcentral. I wish a quick recovery to the flooded portions and tornado hit areas.
Unusually active weather patterns this spring.
We are in yet another severe line of storms training up from the southwest.
I've had to sit here waiting for reboots, due to lightning strikes and up to 70 mile per hour gusts. Downpours are torrential.
I'll check any damage tommorrow morning, hopefully just a few broken branches.
I tied all of them to the wire panels I erected inside of the varmit dome, so I hope all of the whipping wind had a limited effect.
As for your munchers, A three foot fence of poultry netting should deter them. They only seem to bother mine when they are very small and tender stems. As they get bigger chipmunks and squirrels and whatever other varmits around are the threat.

Good providence to all tonight with safety from exterme weather.

over the weekend omaha had tornado activity. fortunately, no deaths involved.

we usually have a lot of severe thunderstorms this time of year. it is unusual to have so many tornadoes so close together.

i hope this doesn't continue throughout all the hot months.

No damage to the maters !!!!! Lots of deadfall out of the trees and minor flooding,... still draining this pm.

Whewww,...... Hope all are fairing well after last eve.

God bless the volunteers helping out in the flooded, and storm ravaged areas of zone 5 and the other affected areas of the country.
