Sorry that you're feeling poorly, Patti. Those sore rib cages are no joke - and that darn cough just keeps continually making things worse!

Cough syrup with codeine is fairly powerful stuff - it should help hold the cough down some to let you get to sleep.

I hope that things are improving through today. Get to bed early - we lose an hour before Sunday morning.

Not to suggest that you may need your beauty sleep (any more than anyone else)!

It seems to me that the best way to treat a usual cold (not so sure about a cough alone) is to spend a lot of time in bed.

I hope that you're feeling better by/on the weekend.

Years ago I had whooping cough,and I actually cracked a rib from coughing so hard.
Dr gave me a cough syrup with codiene,and it was a blessing at the time...took it when I went to bed and it knocked me out enough to get a good nights rest.
I recovered much faster once my body was getting some much needed sleep.

I coughed so hard I thought I broke a rib and my DH insisted I go to the clinic. Turns out I had pneumonia and spent 20 days in the hospital, with surgery to remove some gunk on my lung. NOT FUN!! They never did discover the cause of the pneumonia, and I had to take a shotgun approach with the antibiotics. Think they wrote me up in a medical paper. Ha, my only claim to fame because I was sick :( Hope you get rid of your cough soon, it's no fun, I know.

Patti, you should go to the ER and get an x-ray of your lungs. You sound just like me, and I had pneumonia. Don't be waiting until Monday. My sister almost died about 6 weeks ago, waiting till Monday. Her DH took her to ER finally and they admitted her. Her blood pressure dropped to like 50/30.

If you have difficulty breathing and can hear 'rattling' when you breathe deeply, you should go to the ER - it could be pneumonia, which is a very dangerous virus.

Pneumonia is an inflammation or infection of the lungs most commonly caused by a bacteria or virus - please have a proper diagnosis, and proper treatment!

Yes I do hear rattling..but it is up high back in my throat...sometimes I can cough it up and out. I'll tell my doctor. I have that whispy rattle most of the time. I have terrible sinuses.

Anyway back to the cough syrup...Boy that was a Godsend...I took it at 12:30 last night before I went to bed. I woke up at 4:30 to go to the bathroom without waking to cough one single time. Got up at 6:30 and took some more then finished my sleep..
Denny called at 8:30 to see if I needed anything frome the store...and I was sound asleep. It felt wonderful.

Now to let these ribs quit hurting.

I BEG my doctor for cough syrup but he gives me pills.

The syrup delivers the expectorant and the suppressant MUCH faster and better than the pills do. The codeine doesn't hurt anything either, does it?

Sounds like a viral something or other has turned bacterial.
This is what happened to Custer last week.
He's feeling much better now though, after a round of high powered antibiotics.

I've had that broken rib feeling too.
It's not fun at all!

Gosh, I had to take that kind of Cough Syrup once. Gag! It was awful. Can't believe that "yuk" has a high "Street Value" among druggies.

One time many years ago I had to make an unexpected vist to where my Mom lived. I was sick, coughing, etc. Before I went to bed, my Mom told me to take my shirt off, she rubbed Vicks Vapor rub all over my back and made me wear a flannel top. When I woke up the next morning I was fine. No cough,no nothing. She always said the make sure you wash it all off before going out side. Growing up she was always putting that one of us kids. Sure wish I her back.

I am glad you are going to the doc on mon. and hope the cough med works....I know you are talking about the cough pills they gave Brian which work like a charm on him bu not me.........I am just taking the mucniex dm which has worked great on me til today and I have been coughing my head off course i Have been out since 8:30 this morning too.....Good wishes...Stacy

My DD has asthma and she got that same type of cough. The clinic on the college campus gave her the same thing and also told her to take musinex (sp?). She said that helped her during the day when she was walking around campus as it did not make her so sleepy. But this was one month ago and she still has it but not as bad. Hopefully, you will get better soon.

I hope you feel better soon Patti. My sister Marjorie and my friend Vicki have both broken their ribs from coughing so much.

Cough syrup with codeine was my Scottish Grandma's best friend. LOLOL She needed a "wee" bit of something while living with my Grandpa. She would say "I am just going to have a wee sip" when she would pull out the bottle of cough syrup from the back of the kitchen cupboard. LOL

She didn't drink alcohol - oh no - but she loved her "wee sip" My Grandpa was a mean drunk, who could blame her.
