Rita, the only thing I can tell you is that left-side pain is very common (I know this from looking it up because I experience it myself from time to time), and many of the causes are quite temporary and benign.

Has the vomiting and diarrhea stopped? That would certainly be a good sign.

Google can be your best friend...or your worst enemy! I'm sending Prayers that way that it's nothing serious (and something that can be fixed)!

I know it's very common, Susan, and that brings me GREAT comfort! He's probably just a gassy old fart. :-)

The vomiting only lasted the first 18 or so hours. The diarrhea has been hit/miss since. He'll do pretty good for a few days, then something he eats just moves through in a few hours.

His doctor mentioned a colonoscopy but I guess he is leaving it to the other doc to determine what is needed (if anything).

Again, I'm really hoping this turns out to be nothing...DH doesn't verbalize it but he is quite concerned, partly (I think) because he lost a sister to cancer before her 50th birthday.

Rita, I'm sorry to hear your husband is ill. Of course you both will be in my prayers and I'll be thinking about you.

At times like these I fall back on my what I refer to as my "Scarlett O'Hara routine." When there's nothing you can do to alter a situation and all you can do is worry - I just refuse to think about. It may sound naive but I keeps me somewhat sane. I try to stay busy and when those worrisome thoughts creep back to my consciousness I purposely think about something else.

The important thing is that he is seeing a doctor...It is true that left side pain is common enough but there are also several really serious issues that can cause the pain and if at his/our age, we have a pain that we don't recognize, it is time to seek help.

Sending good thoughts but also encourage you to make sure that he gets to the doctor as planned.

Ruth is exactly right! If my husband had gone to the doctor, instead of the chiropractor, (as I suggested)he would still be alive. Don't let him take a 'ho-hum' attitude - you will need to make sure he follows through with a doctor's plans. If one doctor doesn't 'fix it', get a referral to another, until he no longer has symptoms.

Thank you all for your encouragement. I just keep thinking, "This is nothing!" But when DH is concerned enough to see the doctor, it IS something... Are all men that hard-headed? :-)

A friend of ours married a gal who lost her first husband to pancreatic cancer when he was about 35. She told me about the months and months that he was sick. Multiple trips to doctors and the emergency room with severe stomach pain -- and he was finally diagnosed about three weeks before he died. So YES, we will follow up until this either quits hurting or someone can say definitively what it is.

Sending special thoughts and prayers and yes, most men are that stubborn. Mine is, he lost the vision in his left eye because he refused to go see the eye doctor until he finished hay season and by that time the optic nerve had died. He has arthritis in his eyes.

Sorry to hear your DH has been sick. Did they test him for Crohn's?

I am hoping for his sake it is just a bug he had.

Pancreatic pain is very intense and is felt mostly through the back - 3 of my relatives have died of pancreatic cancer including my Mom.

I have had intermittent left side pain for years - sometimes severe but at the time the ultrasounds showed nothing and my Doctor wasn't too much concerned. I need to get it checked again because I think it is a hernia and only bothers me now and then. I try to keep a diary of whenever my side bothers me.

I hope your DH feels better soon.

DD was sick New Years Eve and spent the night and the next day or so throwing up and with the runs. The runs stayed days after she was done with the vomiting. Almost a week later she had very bad stomach pains. Bad enough that I brought her to the ER. They couldn't find anything wrong but thought it might be a UTI/Bladder infection so gave us antibiotics.

Two days later we were back again with sever pains. Again they found nothing and said the last culter came back negative so we could stop the antibiotics.

I was scared to death. These pains were SEVERE. She would be literally writhing in pain, pale, cold sweats, the works. She hasn't had them since (thank goodness!).

Then I found out that one of the bugs that is going around causes an intense bought of vomiting and diarrhea, then just diarrhea for a few days (and of course feeling like you are going to die in general). Then intense abdominal pains. I wish somebody had told us this. I would have still brought her in but I wouldn't have been in a panic that she was going to die and spent those sleepless nights worrying that it was appendecitis or a blockage or something.

Maybe the bug that your DH had is causing this, even still. Crossing my fingers that it is something UN-serious!

Diverticulitis comes to mind when I hear about abdominal pain on the left side. Anyway, I'm thinking I'm right about it being left Rita. I need to Google. I know it's very painful condition and can make you extremely sick if the diverticuli get inflamed or infected. A colonoscopy would be the test for that condtion. I hope it's just a nasty bug that's dragging it's feet getting on it's way. So glad he's going to the doc to see about it. Good man! Most men want to argue about it and suffer longer than they have to.

I was right, diverticulitis does usually cause pain on the left side: A diverticulum can become infected with bacteria and ruptures, causing diverticulitis. Fever, and pain and tenderness of the lower left abdomen are common symptoms.

Not sure the symptoms match up with Burlie's, you'd have to take a look at that condition. But, no need guessing, I'm sure the Internist will locate the problem and hopefully get your young man back on his feet and pain free soon!

I would get those exact same symptoms about once a year. I thought it was food poisoning. I would throw up the first night and then for about ten days have severe diarrhea and horrible pains in my stomach. I never went to the doctor because the pains were so bad I couldn't walk. Finally I went for a colonoscopy, (routine only), and afterwards had the same symptoms. After 4 days the doctor made me come in for testing. They put me through a lot of very expensive tests and he diagnosed me with Crohn's disease. The problem is that with Crohn's the doctor cannot be sure that is what you have. They just eliminate other illnesses. At first he thought it was kidney stones. That was 3 years ago and I haven't had an attack since. I did read a lot about Crohn's and you can have attacks that come many years apart from each other. It's an autoimmune disease.

My DH had this a long time ago.....they thought it was Diverticulitis, but tunred out to be a very bad infection in his stomach. Treated it with antibiotics and he got better within a few days. BUT it took so long to find the problem....very scary I know! Hope you hubby gets well real soon.

Personally I think he's a gassy old fart and the doctor will give him a roll of tums and send him home but you are wise to get him to a doctor.

Diverculitis is a good guess and can be controlled with diet. The course of antibiotics will have been a good start on controlling the (if there is any) infection and a more fibrous diet will take care of the inflammation.

I'm not ruling anything in or out, but you may be onto something, Lori. Since this started, DH has found that he tolerates salad better than almost anything.

I'm anxious to see what the doctor says Tuesday morning. DH is OK with me going because if doctors say anything more than two syllables long, he just tunes it out. And really -- do doctors know any words less than two syllables long? LOL! When DH saw his regular doc about this, he had the doc look at a growth on his temple. Doc sliced it off and sent it for biopsy. He called DH later and told him it wasn't cancer but it was "something else with a real long name" (according to DH). He told DH he could get "something with a real long name" to put on it. *sigh*

Well, I'm really late but I'm hoping it's nothing more than residual flu symptoms, Rita! I hope B feels better really soon and that you can stop worrying.

I'm hoping he's better soon. Take a small notepad with you to write down anything you want to discuss or that he says... this way you'll have it for later to review.
