left-over speghetti sauce--how can I...

How can I use it up? I always have some left over--not enough for another meal for two, but too much for one, and I hate to just throw it out or feed it to the dogs!

Anyone have any suggestions? I load it up with ground beef, so that needs to work, too.

Make some garlic bread toast and use the sauce for dipping. Yummmy!

Usually I just spoon it into a ziplock bag and freeze it to use later - either the next time I make spaghetti, chili or baked ziti. I frequently have little bags of leftover tomato sauce or chicken broth that I freeze.

Next to our place is a vacant acre lot where the house was removed about 10 years ago. The garlic from their garden kept spreading over those years. There was a patch about 30x70 feet and other clumps here and there. A neighbor who was related to those people told me that the garlic was German Red. I spent some time investigating. There were 9 inch or so balls of bulbs mixed in with rounds. The bulbs were small, maybe an inch in diameter. I planted some of the cloves and got bulbs as large as 3 inches in diameter the first year. I would guess that these wilded plants will tend to grow for many years without problem because the spreading is accomplished by the bulblets bending the scapes over so that the plant can move a foot or two each year. Garlic plants grown from bulbils grow plants that are said to clear any plant diseases that would continue in plants grown from cloves. The 30x70 foot clump was mostly to the north of a huge shade tree, with a 3 foot in diameter trunk. In the spring into early summer the only thing growing there was the garlic but then the weeds would crowd out the garlic. When the scapes were on the plants the clump was still mainly weed free. I'm guessing that the shade helped the garlic overcome weed pressure.

Thanks- I'll try it out, it's not hardened, just seems a bit goopier than it should be. I might try the floetrol, just to see if it makes painting a bit easier. I was worried that it could not be used with waterbornes, not sure why though.

Freezing is the choice for preserving left-overs, not canning, for several reasons. First because the the additional processing would often render the food into mush. Foods containing meats require 75-90 of processing time in the pressure canner. A food that has already been fully cooked won't usually hold up that long under pressure. Second because you have no way of knowing the pH or the density so the processing time required would just be a guess at best. But if you chose to do it anyway and take the risks then yes it would have to be pressure canned - the gravy too - as both are low acid foods and both contain fats. Only high acid foods may be canned using boiling water bath canning. Sorry. Freeze the leftovers for safety sake and better quality. Dave

I can appreciate what you were trying to accomplish with this. :-) Part of the problem -- at least for me -- is that the bricks aren't stacked in a natural/logical orientation. If they were laid horizontally, so that they gave the appearance of being structural, I think my brain would have an easier time understanding the column (it would appear solid and less like a veneer). The corners/edges would also have been easier to integrate.

I would freeze it also. I use spaghetti sauce when I make Spanish rice, Goulash and Shepard pie, instead of tomato sauce. Dottie

Here's another vote for freezing cuz...

I freeze each time there is some leftover...then add it all together for anogther day...

I sure wish we were closer...I'd love to see you again.

Did just this last night
Use it for chicken parmagana.
Lightly bread and fry some skinless chicken breats.

Take a baking casserole...
Spoon just enough of the sauce into the casserole to keep chicken from sticking to the pan
Put chicken on the sauce.
Spoon sauce on top of the chicken.
Pizza cheese on top.

Bake at 375 for until cheese is melted.

Lots of great ideas, folks. So far, I like the Spanish Rice idea best--I like my spanish rice meaty.

Saving and freezing's a great idea - if - I could cram anything else in my freezer...

Hey, cuzzie, good to hear from you. I'm afraid I don't get very far from home these days. We've had the coldest darn winter here this year. I coulda stayed in Iowa and been warmer!

I toss a handful or so of frozen meatballs in, heat real good and it morphs into meatball subs. We love them.

I keep the little boxes of pizza dough mix on hand and use leftover sauce to make pizzas.
Spread sauce on a flour tortilla,top with cheese.Place on a cookie sheet and put them in a 350 oven for a few minutes until cheese is melted.
Cook some wide egg noodles or elbow macaroni and mix in the sauce.Place it in a casserole dish,top with cheese and bake 25-30 minutes to heat through and melt the cheese.
Open a can of biscuits(or make your own,just as easy).Place biscuits in a cupcake pan and press up the sides of the pans.Fill each hole with the sauce,top with cheese and bake until biscuit is done and cheese is bubbly.My kids use to love these.You can also just flatten out the biscuit on a cookie sheet,top with the sauce and cheese and bake.Good either way.

you could make quickie pizzas too, by using a bagel (onion is my favorite) or english muffins.
lightly toast the bagle, add the sauce and cheese and any other toppings you can squeeze on and put in the oven for a few minutes.
Or add to sausage sandwich, cheese steak or as angelaid said...meatballs.

Use it for Pizza sauce or you can make some tiny English muffin pizzas. If you have never done that use the muffin as the dough then top them off as a usual pizza then bake till bubbly.

Used to do this for my DS when he was a youngster.

Use your imagination.

Grilled Cheese Pizza Sandwich
1 tablespoon butter, softened
2 slices bread
2 slices mozzarella cheese **I used regular cheese slices
4 slices pepperoni (sandwich size, sliced ultra thin)I used balogna
3 tablespoons pizza sauce *use your spaghetti sauce

***I spread the sauce with the cheese and meat on the bread before grilling

Directions
Butter one side of each slice of bread.
Place one slice in a heated skillet, butter side down. Top with cheese, pepperoni, and another slice of cheese. Cover with second bread slice, butter side up.
Cook over medium heat until golden brown, turning once.
Let sit for a couple minutes. Cut into 4 long slices and serve with pizza or marinara sauce for dipping.

... in other words ... only about half there.

I do something similar to Joann. Pizza burgers. Use hamberger buns spoon 2-3 tablespoons of sauce and top with cheese and bake for 15 minutes, open faced sandwich.

Like Angela I use spaghetti sauce for meatball subs.

Curse you Angela! Now I want one. Have to have mozzarella on them though.
