Painting master bedroom black?

I posted this on the home decorating forum, but thought I'd try here, as well. My good friend is adding on to her home, including a master bedroom suite, and is seriously considering black as the wall color. She is very talented and has a beautiful home, so it will probably work. If any of you have done the same, or have pics, I would love to hear from you! Thanks.

Sounds dramatic!

Sorry, I have no pics, but make her use a Gray primer wherever Black will be used!

Maybe she could install one of those "starfield" light projectors that will slowly rotate the heavens on her walls!!?!!?!?
(Gosh...that sounded romantic...;-)) !!

Maybe some of that "rope-lighting" shining up from behind cove-moldings for dramatic effect? Sort of a "soft halo" around the rooms' ceiling?!?

Hey!! That's got ME thinking now....

Many companies have pre-tinted blacks in different sheens. This may be a better way to go, since they're EXTREMELY black!

Hmmm....your friend may want to think twice about painting the room black, that is if she thinks she will ever change the color in the future. Painting over black is very difficult, seems to bleed thru even the best of paints or primers.

My neighbor's son painted his bedroom black and the next owners had a devil of a time covering up the black.

At first I thought you meant cool as in a cool color tone, now I think you mean cool looking....wayfair has some cool geometric patterns. Claire, I agree with you on this now and I have decided not to paint my wall. However, I will soon move my toddler/daughter to her own room and what do you think about painting the wall for a toddler’s room? I did keep in mind that children grow up fast and possibly no longer need a girly pink/lavender wall.

I am, also, of the opinion that a small room can be painted a darker color. What makes a light small room look smaller are the shadows in the corners. A dark color reflects less light blurring the edges of the room., By absorbing the light, "the walls of the room are less clearly marked and can give an illusion of more space." I would consider removing the crown molding, as it is one more thing defining the size of the room. Is there a light in the ceiling? Often a semi-flush up light gives the feeling of height.

Our new home has a modern farmhouse style. We are painting master bedroom in SW Sea Salt. Pictures are of the adjoining master bathroom. Currently painted SW agreeable gray. It feels a bit dull. Should we paint it also in Sea Salt or a complimentary spa like color?

I don't have pics but my mom painted her guest bath black and it looks WONDERFUL!! She did use a white shower curtain and the flooring is white tile...but it looks really great. My husband and I just moved into a house and I almost painted our master bedroom black. The only thing that stopped me is because I didn't want to change out our bedding and curtains right at that time. I WILL eventually do it!! Trust your friend...it's not near as dark as what you think it will be. It's very glam if done right.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. We spent the last few days with these same friends. We poured over the magazines (Domino Magazine has quite a few black/gray painted rooms featured and they look beautiful!) She's still not sure.

I made the suggestion if she was hesitant about doing the bedroom black, do her master bath black. It has skylights and windows, so it wouldn't be a "black hole." Black really can look glamorous, if done right.....I love people who think "outside the box." Our home is predominantly SW's Blonde. I love it, but not exactly the most unique color in the world.

I can't wait to see what she comes up with.
