what if a recipe calls for 'whole breasts'?

In my mind when a recipe calls for a "whole breast" of chicken I understand that to mean the entire breast=both sides of the chicken's breast meat. Is this right or does it just mean a single breast including the bones? I'm making a recipe that calls for 4 whole breasts but if my way of thinking is correct (1 whole=both sides) that seems like way too much chicken for this casserole dish. What do y'all think?
