Good News from eBay

They are so funny they always give you 5 cents worth of freebie's and then they stick it to you. Today I got an email announcing a freebie for a few days and then they said..

Also, because we know buyers take into consideration the total cost of an item, also starting April 19, to encourage sellers to keep shipping costs low, the Final Value Fee will be applied to the total amount of the sale?including shipping.

Now what does all this mean.they give you a freebie that will go away fast and then they stick it to you. I know there were people who did outrageous shipping charges as I myself got stuck one time, but most sellers just do the best they can to get a package to you as cheap as possible. Now the seller is going to have to stick it to the buyer in order to compensate for revenues lost..eBay has become such a w-hore......

I quit selling on EBay because shipping costs went up so much. And now I would be charged a fee on the shipping costs? No thanks.

Ebay has been sticking it to seller left and right for a long time, and that is why I quit listing. Unless you are selling big ticket items, with a very large markup, you are just wasting your time trying to make any kind of profit there anymore. With the fees they garner from the sellers, making and crafting quality items only amounts to slave wages, and my time is worth more than that.

Nice plants. My only question is about the Haworthia 'Lime Green'. Maybe because it is a small seedling, it doesn't look anything like H. 'Lime Green' which is an H. truncata variant that has "lime green" leaves rather than the darker green usually seen in this species. With age, it may develop the typical distichous leaves.

Yes, Green thumbs up for Ron from me too! He offers an excellent collection of hard to find butterfly nectar and host plants and also many nice plants for hummingbirds, along with lots of other healthy hard to find perennials, vines and woody plants. Delivery is fast, packing is good, communication is excellent, plants are well-priced and grow well. As you can tell I can't say enough good things about him.

I just bought (with great apprehension) a Bosch range on Ebay. The seller did have a very good rating. I actually saved $900.00. I was worried, but $900.00 is alot of money when you are building a home and have many extras that you weren't planning on. The range was really packed well. It was on a pallet and it had foam around it, plastic wrap and more plastic wrap. The seller had that it was only curb side dely. I was really afraid of that becoz being single, I really didnt' have anyone to help me bring it inside. Well, the driver actually automatically brought it into my garage. I then gave him $20.00 which he didnt' even want. before I signed for the range, I unwrapped it and it was totally dent free and seems fine. Maybe I just lucked out - I haven't had it installed yet, but so far it was a smooth transaction. Good luck in whatever you decide. As for the mfg. not honoring warranty if not bought from an authorized dealer, that's crap on their part ! It's thier product, they should honor the warranty no matter where you buy it. Why should it matter?????

Wow - you all are making me feel like I have a lot more Valentines this morning! Red hit the name on the head, I realized. I buy things 'within a certain parameter', and that is why they work. I can swap things out from room to room, and they take on a new light when they are moved. I guess it says that I have 'flow', since I am able to do that. :-) Cooperbailey, my mother jokingly calls me house 'the museum', as I do enjoy old things so much. anele has almost discovered my secret business name! My 3 dogs DO participate in the production of anything I sew. When I used to lay fabric on the floor in here, you could count on 3 dog butts quickly gathering and weighting it down while I tried to match patterns, etc. And that was the previous generation of my 3 other Brittanys. Now that I cut on the kitchen island, all these can do is lay on the fabric as it drapes onto the floor from my lap as I sew, and believe me, they do. Among friends and family, I said I'd call it 'Dog Bottom Decor'! My 3 Dogs Designs is a MUCH nicer image. Here is the front window this AM. I had to close the blinds to take a picture against the light outside. Since you all know that I am of the 'more is more' school, this is the front of my 10x25 living room, with my wonderful Romweber entertainment center purchased years ago on sale. I took a quick inventory this AM, and of all the 'stuff' in the room, that piece, 2 chairs and 3 lamps and 2 art pieces are the ONLY pieces not bought on CL, eBay or a local consignment shop. I can't resist showing you the sweet toddler picture of my late Dad, who passed away 3 years ago today. My mother gave it to me recently, and I looked around and set it on the Chinoiserie desk, never dreaming that I'd soon make drapery panels that would compliment his outfit!

I love to buy on eBay, but listening to you as Sellers, it sounds like there may be less to choose from. Is there another site you would recommend for me to shop from?

I do hate all the changes they've made lately, but I think the fees will work out to be about the same as they are now since the initial listing will now be free.

There are still a LOT of people charging outrageous shipping (to avoid paying fees).. so I think this could be a good thing.

I hate change, but I understand what Lydia is saying! The other night I was looking for a remote helicopter for a friend. Found one for $.99...but the shipping/handling was $69.99! How crazy is that?

They already ding you twice by taking part of you selling price AND by charging you for using paypal which, unless you are equipped to take credit cards, you have no choice but to use. So now, they'll be dinging you a third time for shipping. Great.

Yes, as a seller, I have no choice but to include all those fees as part of my price. How else can I make any profit?

That person just wanted to make their money back without having to pay a final value fee. Ya do what ya gotta do to make it work.
Final value fees don't include shipping charges.

They didn't used to include shipping charges in the Final Value Fee, but as of April 19 they will!!!!

They giveth and then taketh away. Such is life I guess.

I think it sounds very fair and resonable. Allowing people to charge whatever shipping they wanted and NOT counting it against the final value fee was a mistake to begin with. Doing it this way I think will even out things and be to the "honest" people's advantage in the long run.

As an eBay buyer (I've never sold anything on eBay or any other site), it ticks me off to pay $12.50 for shipping a few skeins of yarn, only to have the yarn delivered in one of the US Postal Service flat rate boxes - for $4.95.

From a buyer's perspective, it certainly has seemed for many years that some buyers charge excessively high shipping fees so they can pad their profit. It only takes a few bad apples to spoil the entire barrel.

I have to agree that as a buyer only, this sounds better to me....but then again, I liked EBay better in the days when it was more like an old fashioned rummage sale and people just sold stuff they didn't want/use anymore. Now everyone has an EBay "store" it seems. Haven't even browsed there in a couple of years.

I agree with Carla.

Too many sellers try to game the system by charging high shipping selling things for as little as a penny. Those sellers hurt the honest ones.

Sellers have to list items a fair price that includes their costs.

Buyers have to be willing to pay a fair price and not expect something for nothing.

eBay has always left it up to the buyer and the seller to decide what the market will bear.

I always have to laugh at people who consider eBay to be greedy. They are just trying to make a profit for their investors just like all companies do. No different from the seller trying to make a profit on their widget.

If people don't like it they can buy and sell elsewhere.

Regardless of how ebay charges their fees, the seller has to make a profit. And the buyer always knows, BEFORE buying, what the shipping will cost. IOW, the buyer can decide, based on total price including shipping, if they want to pay that much or not.

I don't give a hoot if the seller charges a penny for the item and $10 for shipping or $10 for the item and a penny for shipping. Either way, my bottom line is $10.01.

Now, the only difference is what the seller owes ebay. And as a buyer, again, I don't give a hoot. I'm either willing to pay $10.01 or I'm not. I don't go into a store and ask what their markup is. I decide if I want to pay the price or not - whether that item is worth that amount to me. The seller's costs are immaterial to me.

Believe me, whatever those costs are, they get passed on to the buyer. Whatever ebay charges, be it listing fees, final value fees, paypal fees, shipping fees, or whatever else they can come up with, in the end, the buyer pays it. The seller has no choice but to add it on to their price. And whether they add it to shipping or price really makes no difference. It will somehow get to that bottom line.

So yeah. I don't see ebay as an evil empire. They're looking to make a profit, same as any other business. But make no mistake. The profit they make has to come from SOMEwhere. And as a seller, I'm going to have to make sure it comes from my buyer. I've got to make my profit too!
