What is Cranberry Jezebel? Sounds interesting!!

It is definitely on my "must have" list for Thanksgiving Linda..... I can get 2 different kinds of cranberries Ocean Spray and another brand. They are $1.29 per bag right now. I haven;t checked the fresh horseradish yet - that is a trip to the farmers market

Linda - You may remember that I made jezebel last year for the first time. On the 'net I saw it commonly spread over cream cheese as an app, so that's what I did. Everyone loved it. Raved crazy in fact. My question - IIRC at the time I asked about the horseradish and you told me to use prepared, just a fresh bottle. So that's what I did. But here it sounds like you're really using fresh horseradish? Today I bought fresh. Aside from grating it - outdoors with eye protection - anything I need to know?

Well...blessings on you...I guess. I meant "fresh" as in not been sitting int he refrig for a while. My jar of horse radish is at least 6 months old and has lost considerable oomph.
Grate the root and add salt and vinegar....and hold your breath the whole time!!

Something else to remember. The vinegar stabilizes the "hotness" in horseradish. So if you like it really hot let it sit three to five minutes before adding the vinegar.

I grate horseradish in the FP inside the house without any problem. I guess if you were processing lots you might need to take it outside. But just one root or enough for a jar or two , it really isn't necessary.

I love Cranberry Jezebel! I tried it with the family and they prefer canned jellied cranberries. Go figure!

My family will not change their Thanksgiving or Christmas meal in any way. They have to have green beans, deviled eggs, turkey, jellied cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and cornbread dressing with giblet gravy. You can bring any other dishes you want but they probably will not be touched.

As for desserts several members always thought they had to have Chocolate Cream Pie. Now one member has to have Red Velvet Cake. Me? I just want something good to eat, preferably something I haven't had for Thanksgiving for fifty years in a row.

I hope you can find one as nice as my last one was . . .

We just grated 3 roots (looked just like the above picture!) It made about a quart and a half. DH has to go to West Side Market and get more, as I want some for gifts. It was around $3-4/#.

I wish I could find fresh horseradish. Lately, none of the stores I usually shop at have any. Guess I'll have to head across town to the kosher grocer to get my holiday supply.

WHAT THE HECK?!

When I made this last year, I bought the "hot" version of horseradish. I made it per the recipe and found the jezebel had a nice bite. In fact, I was afraid that family would object to it being too hot. I just bought a fresh jar of hot horseradish and two bags of cranberries, figuring on a double batch. Added 6 T of horseradish and found it dull. Fast forward, I added the entire 6 oz jar plus the rest of a jar of "regular" horseradish that was in the fridge, and even my heat-wimp wife says it doesn't have any zing.

It can only be the horseradish, right? I'm debating between buying a root (never used the last one), making horseradish from scratch and starting over, or just giving up on it this year.

Either way, current batch is headed for the trash. At this point it tastes more like dull horseradish than cranberries.

That's a pity....should have quit when you found out it was wimpy horseradish. It would still be good but not a hot.
I have debated adding a bit of wasabi powder....
Maybe not for Thanksgiving...but just as an experiment.
