This is a debate forum. Therefore I thought posting this link may be beneficial to those who choose to read it!

Why don't you take this over to the Hot Topics forum on the Garden Web. They are probably better suited to your interests. This is a forum about issues concerning pets.

Drew, if it helps, my mom is going to be 91 and is enjoying the new fruit trees we are adding. Even if it is just a couple of fruits that we leave on. Yes I forget that really the journey is the prize, It really doesn't matter if they bear or not! 4. lots and lots of parasitic organisms like apples. Oldryder, that reminds me that this was the real reason i wanted to wait on apples. It's tough to get them without problems. The worst is I'm moving in 3 or 4 years so I feel like I'm frozen in amber. I can't do anything and time is going by. I decided to concentrate on herbs and vegetables and learn how to grow them. Tomatoes and peppers are very rewarding to grow. I'm keeping five pepper plants. 4 I'm turning into Bonsai plants. One I want to turn into a tree! Here is the cultivar Manzano Pepper, Orange - (Capsicum pubescens ) Extremely hot, orange colored pepper looking much like the habanero. This pepper is a rocoto tree pepper relative and is noted for its cold hardiness, as it naturally grows on Andean mountain slopes, this pepper will survive several degrees below freezing. Plants grow to 2-6ft, can live for many years. I like the unusual, also i discovered if you boil the peppers in salt water about 4 times, it removes the heat, and are great stuffed. They look like small oranges! Well not really but look cool.The tree is doing fine, 3 feet tall the first year. Hope to get it to 6 feet. 2 weeks inside so far under lights. No leaf loss. Here is the fruit Being a rare Capsicum pubescens species pepper, it's not like your normal peppers. The seeds are black. Anyway stuff like this is keeping me occupied and extents the growing season to indoors. I want to grow more plants indoors to keep me busy. Here is a cross section of the pepper. A thick walled pepper great for stuffing. Can be used in the Rocoto Relleno dish.

Although I really don't have great credentials or special taste buds, consider this for your citrus craving/growing............Thomasville Citrangequat- I have 2 trees that are 10+ years old. I don't use the green fruit, but the mature yellow/orange fruit are pleasant to eat freah. They are a lot milder than grapefuit, not leaving the sour aftertaste. They are mildly sweet with enough acid. I think of them like eating a semi-sweet, orange-flavored lemon. Nothing like clarity. The trees are productive ,grow in clay, are nourished by mulch only, and have stiff 2" thorns that are a terror. I clip them off. The mature fruit will eventually become dehydrated if they hang around too many weeks. If you eat grapefruit, these won't be a challenge to eat. There is no funky component to the flavor.Because they produce a lot of fruit that don't get eaten, I grafted Brown Select satsuma and Hamlin orange buds/scions to several of the branches at a height of about 7 feet in 2009. I heard a local speaker declare that there is a theory that grafting high on a citrus trunk can provide a greater cold tolerance to the grafted branches. Well, these 8 month old new shoots were exposed to a January 2010 short-lived low temp of 14 degrees....and neither tree had any windbreak, plastic, mulch/dirt mound, gloves, or long johns. Results? One of 5 Brown Select branches died, and both Hamlin branches survived. That is plenty cold hardy enough for me to believe the 'theory'.(Side note: I also topworked 2 old sour orange tree branches at about 7 ft with BC2 satsuma and Brown Select satsuma in 2009.....all 10 Brown s. survived and 7 of 10 BC2 survived.)I imagine that with your protection strategy that the T.C. could be a survivor/producer. Maybe it would serve as a r/s also......If you enjoy lemons, then maybe a Sunquat could be considered. My 4 year old Sunquat has lemon-like fruit that average 2" to 2-1/2" diameter, and mulch is the only source of nutrients. It is in a mound of sandy soil and got no protection in that 14 degree thing. It defoliated about 15% of the leaves, and several thin newer twigs died, but that was all. Importantly, it produced a full load of fruit following the freeze. It is mild enough to eat as a lemon, and it doesn't have a funky taste component. The peel is edible, but not as tasty as kumquat peel to me. It is about 6 ft tall and wide. I saw one that was about 12 feet tall and full of fruit, but this one tends to do more branch-flopping than growing upright. There are 3 Meiwa kumquats here that are 10 years old, and they had 10% defoliation only.They produced a lot after. There is a 10+ year old Calamondin also, and it dropped 30%.It produced a lot after. The 10+ year old Armstrong satsuma lost 10%, as well as a few twigs.It had 60% fewer fruit after. The 3- 10+ year old Bloomsweet grapefruit lost 20% to 40% of the leaves, depending on which tree, and still fruited big time.If you have not eaten a Sunquat before, I would mail a couple to you. It tastes a lot like the Meyer 50% parent, but slightly better..........For those with the climate, etc. to grow the superior fruit, these may not be praiseworthy, but...they do have their place.Although not to be confused with ribeye steak,....they are a LOT better than canned Vienna sausage

Donnnakay- what a lovely thread... The kitchen I remember most fondly was my grandmother's where I lived as a child while my father was in the service and off and on until the early 60s. My grandparents built the house in 1922. It had a pantry with wood and zinc counters, a big soapstone sink, an ice box (for refrigeration) , upper and lower sage green painted cabinets (uppers with glass panes) and a long circular dish towel that hung on a wooden dowel. The kitchen was a large rectangular room: one long wall had two windows and a large porcelain sink with drain boards on each side that was in a painted wood cabinet. The other long wall had lower cabinets with open shelves above where she displayed old Quimper pottery. At one end there was a white painted brick alcove that housed a wonderful old but working gas stove that was probably converted from wood or coal. The other end opened into a small dining area with a pine table and chairs and a large dry and canned goods cupboard. In the middle of the kitchen was a long wood table that served as the only prep area and had 2 stools that we used to "visit" on. On the walls were hung things like the coffee grinder, a school like clock and various kitchen tools - like the wooden paddles with ridges on one side that I was allowed to use to make the butter balls. The kitchen had red and white checked curtains, the walls and cabinets were white and the floors were a dark wood. The most important element in this kitchen were the delicious scents and smells that floated through the air into the rest of the house....I can still smell them when I close my eyes.... Alas this wonderful home was torn down to make way for a Trophy Home (read McMansion)....with none of the charm and warmth of the original...Had I lived closer I would have tied myself to the wrecking ball to save some of those treasures: the stove, the cabinets, the sinks and oh so much more...these are the very elements I have seen in many kitchens here...that porcelain sink with the drainboards was on another thread...being used in a garden!! Now we are talking about sustainable products!! Thank you again for bringing us this thread...I have had a lovely time reliving my childhood in that warm and inviting kitchen where yummy goodies and memorable meals were produced in a slower and gentler time.... Frankly, I think some people in this forum could stand to read the article in question. This is an "Animal Debates" forum, not a "forum about issues concerning pets" (I think you're thinking of the Pets forum). Too many people here don't even know what a debate is, and seem to think it means sharing your feelings and opinions only with no rebuttal. God forbid that you ever disagree with someone else's stance -- that means you're judging or criticizing them! Too many people here don't know how to use logic or rational debate methods. I applaud the_adams for trying to point people towards proper debate methods...not that it'll actually do anything.

rivkadr - Thanks for posting, atleast someone saw what I was trying to do! Someone posted on another thread on this forum "May i suggest you join a good collage debate team and learn the rules."

Apparently their is someone else out their who thinks that formal debate rules should be followed. I had already posted this link it hopes of helping others learn rules.

the_adams, I like you and hope you don't get upset. I read the Truth Tree and it was interesting,in fact amusing. It's been a long time since i've read so many contradictions in an article.
I especially loved the paragraph on evidence. Why don't you start a debate on Schrodingers Cat, using only the rules listed under evidence. That is a good debate item for animal debates.

I noticed there was a lot of latin(sp) quoted.The Romans were very good debaters,yet i beleive they were defeated from within and hordes of half civilized germanic tribes.

I'm really looking forward to a debate on a cat in a box.LOL

Oaklief - That is certainly a bizzarre debate! The person apparently wasn't making a racist comment - just posing a stupid question.

I usually do not look under general or miss. in that forum. And even under the other topics I choose my debates wisely. Freedom of Speech will inevitably lead to uninformed/unintelligent people saying things that reflect just that! :-)

Hey, no need to apologize to me, I didn't post or respond to it! :-) The title does sound bad and the post really is stupid. The post is the OP's attempt to make a genralization based on their own experience. Basic sociology will teach you that genralizations made on ones own experiences are generally inaccurate.

I certainly wouldn't respond to the post, not really worth my time.

I like the Volconvo site for their Philosophy, Breaking News, Politics, Society, and Science forums. I have found sites with such a broad spectrum of debate forums can attract some really, uh, uneducated people. That is why I choose my battles wisely! :-)

Here is another debate forum I enjoy, although this one may not appeal to everyone because it is more genre specific. Earlier my reply was to Quirky who showed interest in debate forums.

BTW... On this forum, under the "Health & Medicine" section, there is a post that is of paticular interest to me that is entitled "A Hot Cure for Diabetes", with a link to an article in "The National Review of Medicine" entitled " Canadian team cracks type I diabetes code." (My DH has Type 1)

Are you speaking of The Lancet Medical Journal? If so, that's obviously a Yes! I don't have a subscription but I frequent their website.
