Comments (22)funcolors, painting professionals may be good judges of if a paint that they have in hand covers well and looks good immediately after painting, but they wont know what looks good after 10 years because they rarely go back to look. I doubt that most paint pros that do only typical residential work could even comment even on short-term durability. Painters in institutional settings have an advantage. IIRC, CR used to test paint in the field by painting stuff and putting it out in a field. Unfortunately that kind of paint testing is probably not that useful anymore. The current marketplace that requires new and improved products all the time so by the time real-life testing is complete, the paint would no longer be available. Stuff gets reformulated constantly. That is why accelerated testing is more useful. Note that most of these are directed to interior paints. Fading resistance can be determined by exposure to UV light. (Painting a sunny room with plain windows?) Mildew resistance can be tested by putting painted surfaces in a humid chamber with some spores. (Painting a bathroom?) Abrasion resistance can be reproducibly tested with a machine. (How about a kids room here?) How well paints clean off can be assessed by applying standardized versions of common household soil materials and cleaning with another test machine. (Maybe a kitchen?) How well does it cover? (How many professional painters paint over a standard test pattern with 30 different paints?) You should nudge yourself out of your parochial world once in a while and consider what other kinds of information are available. Consider how my general MO that would be tailored to paint choice. I consult CR and evaluate their test procedure. I see 6 flat exterior paints. Appearance after 3, 6 and 9 years are equal. One is not very mildew resistant and I have a mildew problem so I am down to 5. One has been reformulated since the test so it will be buying a pig in a poke. That leaves 4. Another costs $20, but the nearest store is 15 miles away. A couple cost $23 and $25 at nearby stores. One I can walk to. The last is priced at $40 and it is at the top of the ratings. It is low VOC, but I dont care because it is outside and well-ventilated by definition. That is kind of pricy to me and not worth the insignificant increased performance. Oh, which to buy? I guess I will go for the one preferred by a painting professional, who has used one or two brands of paint over the last 10 years....See MoreBehr paint problem
Comments (17)Dwalls is EXACTLY correct on this... Since I directly tint a LOT of Reds/Magentas..."I know-eth of what I speak"! (wow...!) If you shake up a Neutral/Ultra-deep/Base-4/Deep tint-base WITHOUT COLORANT, the result is the same... THEY'RE ALMOST CLEAR WHEN DRY. Now...add fairly transparent colorants, like Magenta or shades of Red...the result doesn't get much better. Depending on the specific color, some formulas add a little White (Titanium-dioxide). This helps some with TRANSPARENCY, BUT...it can "mute" some reds-meaning it can lend a "pinkness", if enough is added back in. I've seen some horse-**it paintjobs done by "painters", union or not, who thought "they know it all". (Funny side-story----Last June, I painted DD's Bedroom to C2's Impeccable. A DeepGoldyBrown! Used a tinted primer, and good technique. Looks beeeeutiful! This fall, a "painter who's been painting for 25 yrs." was using this exact paint/color in a big Dental-Suite. Our other Paint Mgr. went over to look at it after they complained about the "streakiness". He said his jaw hit the floor! The "painter" was doing such a crappy job, that our guy had to SHOW HIM how to do this color. By then, a small crowd had developed around this!!! "The painter" was kinda ticked..."I've been painting for blah-blah-blah...". Welllll, he wasn't nearly as good as HE thought...!!!) As I stated, I've literally made that color b4, and I wouldn't have let them out the door without a GRAY primer, and advice about technique used on top of the primer. Comments (19)Chris is correct. I think many painters would LOVE to have the problem of figuring out how much of a BIG discount they can/should pass along to the customer! Unfortunately, most do not have that problem. I don't have a pro account at SW because he's absolutely correct that you can do better with pricing during the SW sales, at least twice per year maybe three, than a professional discount. If I had a pro account, they wouldn't let me buy the paint at the sales price even if I'm buying paint for my own home, I'd be locked into the pro discount all 12 months/365 per year. And to get a pro discount it's a matter of playing a volume sales game. Which, I admit, I do not understand all the details of how that works. Since it is based on volume of sales, it's difficult for painters (and other trades) who are not 100% dedicated to using just SW to get a discount worth the effort. That's true for any brand, actually. Painters/trades who are diversified across brands would have a hard time selling enough paint to get a level of discount that's worth the work it takes to sell that much of one brand, one palette. It's different for larger contractors with multiple crews, etc. A few things to remember: 1. SW is like every other brand. It has lesser grades and top-tier grades. It's unfair to lump SW under just one umbrella and conclusively across the board say it's not good paint. Prep factors into paint performance as well. 2. Paint formulations change. They've all changed at a rapid pace over the last 3 to 5 years. What you loved a few years ago might suck now. What you didn't love so much a few years ago might be fabulous today. There was a time when being a true believer, an evangelist for one brand/grade of paint meant something; in 2015 terms, it's not that meaningful. 3. Worrying about whether the painter is passing along a discount is peanuts in the grand scheme of things. A discount will amount to pennies per square foot. It's LABOR that is the largest % of any paint job. Cheap/expensive, top grade/contractor grade, sale or discount, the LABOR cost will be the biggest chunk of the bill....See MoreMy contractor switched my paint from regal to superhide & ultra spec
Comments (65)@Mary Elizabeth good point about the primer, etc. I know the painter said he would do 2 coats for existing walls, there will be some smaller areas that will be new drywall, so will check on that piece per @funcolors comments that you referenced. I do agree $250 is negligible in the overall cost to upgrade to Regal Select Matte. thank you both for the great advice @Faron79 appreciate the info on the PVS relative ratings. That certainly helps me understand the significant difference in durability. Sounds like the Aura Bath & Spa Matte would be a good selection for the entrance/hallway where we have had most of the issues. Since the hallway opens up into wide ”doorways” into other spaces painted with Ultra 500 flat, will it be noticeable that the type of paint changes are the corners? Sounds like should be of little consequence. thanks so much for all the info! @mxk3 z5b_MI thanks…the BM store is telling me that Ultra 500 only comes in flat currently. Don’t know if this is a recent change, but also they are no longer carrying it, but have reserved some paint for people that are part way thru a project and need to complete with the same paint. As it turns out when they removed the backsplash in one area of our remodel, they cut thru the drywall to the opposite site (there is only one sheet of drywall in this space since it backs up to a shelf area in the hall on the other side). So fortuneatley I can still get enough paint for that repair....See Moreandrelaplume2
