Can you ID my (neighbor's) bamboo?

Steve, it's sneaking in--I didn't choose it! I was just wondering if I should recycle it. :) But I won't transplant the bit I dug up. I wonder why it took so long to get over here. Maybe it recently broke through a barrier. It's in a very tidy and well-maintained yard. We do have a nice Bambusa ventricosa and a B. multiplex and they are perfectly well behaved. I used to keep Fargesia spp. in zone 6--I like things to grow slowly so I can keep up. I'll look into some of the bigger species when we "do" the backyard. And I'll stick with the clumpers. I don't imagine this bamboo can be nearly as bad as English ivy or wild blackberries can it? Can I just stomp on it when it pops up? Can we eat it? Focus focus... It seems pretty shallow rooted. Would a narrow trench along the fence line keep it out? It's getting pretty close to a nectarine and a tamarisk and once it gets there I think it'll be impossible to remove. It's just a small incursion right now and I could probably dig it all out in 20 minutes. (Yes, the previous owners actually planted a nectarine next to a tamarisk and a fence. I think the tam could beat the aureus but the nectarine is a wimp.) I'm impressed with the strength of those culms. Wow do they not bend! I guess that's what the groove gets you. It's very pronounced. Thanks all!

Thanks Jule and Bern! Julie, first of all, it is great to hear from you! Yes, the golf course will be out of service for quite a while I'm sure, I just wish I could have gotten a picture of it when the deep water hit it, but that part of town was cut off and I would have had to drive miles around to get to that side, but I had things to do. I helped the 90 year old man that lives across from me about a mile away, the last two days, but I don't have a picture of his house to post, maybe later. The picture of the barn that Bern commented on is the next property over from this man and that was his house, he lived in that barndominium or whatever they call them now. I think that is great that people in Wisconsin, and people all over the USA, are sending donations and much needed items here. I guess there are still a whole lot of good people out there yet. :) The "Road May Flood" sign kind of says it all. The underpass is about a block long, and it was flooded on the other side all the way to the river bridge which is another 2 blocks away. Bern, that guy with the pole barn house already got flooded in the rains we had back in April. In fact, there was more damage from that rain in the rural areas than this hurricane rain. In that rain, I had water in my whole yard and under my entire house. Good thing my house is on blocks otherwise it would have been damaged by that high water. Anyway, that pole barn man had just finished building a levy or berm about ten days before the storm hit, to keep water away from his house, and then this happened to him. In April, the electric company was leasing his land to store trucks and old light poles, the 60 footers, on his property. There were about 60 of those huge long light poles that floated away never to be seen again, not to mention the ruined trucks and dozers and other equipment. The man had an RV, a school bus, and a tractor and frontend loader, which were all ruined. I have a few more pictures, but if you go on YouTube and type in La Grange Flood or Columbus Texas Flood, you will see aerial video clips of the massive water coverage. BTW, to whom it may concern, I'm having problems with my email account so I haven't been able to access it for about 2 weeks now, just saying... Thanks again everyone and I will see what other pics I have. Stay safe everyone.

Hey Liz, I was just thinking about you the other day and wondering where you were. Guess you were up in the "friendly skies" or burning something :0 Congratulations on being in the home stretch!! Then it'll be time to start over. (Kidding, of course.

Hi liz,

Good to hear that things are (more or less) "falling into place" for you folks.

My neighbour says that one needs to be careful what brands of paper that one uses - that some are much friendlier to septic tanks than others, that seem to clog rather than disintegrate.

When I saw a guy checking a case of TP through the checkout at the market the other day, I asked him whether such a quantity was the size indicated for folks who were full of it and, without missing a beat, he said that, yes, he thought that to be the situation.

Good wishes to you and yours.

Hi Liz.. I can relate to your re-do on your home.. I will bet it looks wonderful...

I am in the process myself now.. as I am pretty sure I will list this home next Spring and sell it. I don't need this much home, and this much yard to care for by myself.. but my first project will be selling off all of Bob's woodworking and carpenter tools down in the man cave.. Golly he sure had a fortune tied up in that stuff...

Enjoy your lovely newly done home Liz.

Hi Liz - I don't post much as I too have way too much going on - just like you! Just wanted to chime in on the septic issue. We had our tank pumped just fine 2 years ago - and then last year (one year after the pumping) we had "overflow" showing up in our yard - mid-August. Hot weather - can you say YUK!!! Turns out the distribution box "broke" - the previous owner somehow got away with installing a box that was not = to the size of the tank, or something like that. Plus we had no idea where the distribution box was and neither did the previous owner, or the company that put it in, or the local health department. We had backhoes & all other such stuff digging up our yard for most of August. We did some repair work last year and will finish this year. Thank GOD I can FLUSH!
