I moved!! LONG

By choice I went into an assisted living facility in Minot and so far do like it. NO stairs, more people to visit etc. I have a 2 bedroom place, can choose to eat the three meals they serve, or cook myself. So far I haven't cooked. Meals very good and yes it is fun (for me) to visit. Found 2 friends from my town here, have my own car, and sure enjoy downsizing my junk. I still have my half of the duplex where I live, but oh so much closer to shops and other things. Get free transportation if I want--nurses on duty 24/7 and they are very nice. Very quiet area and everyone says HI when I walk up and down the halls. I had been thinking about this for a long time but DH would not even consider it. Have computer set up, finally, new phone, good cable (same as before, but I do get free basic and just pay for the extended. This is one of the larger places and places in Bismarck, Fargo, and several other place and not much above the rent I would have had to pay if I had gone into a apt. Good maintenance My kids live in the other half the duplex so no worry there. Questions? feel free to ask. Marie from ND

I once moved roses and other plants 840 miles from CA to WA. I had to dig them up in the middle of summer, which is a very bad thing to do in CA due to the heat and dryness, but it had to be done. I dug them ahead of time, and potted them up, and then sat them in a cool shady spot until moving day came. I wanted to see which ones were going to die immediately and toss them before packing up. Then the potted survivors went into the car for the overnight drive, and were put in a cool shady spot on arrival - plenty of those in WA even in summer. They were planted the next winter. If you're not driving and everything has to go in boxes, you can box potted roses too, but you'll have to trim them down severely. Root ball too. Nurseries shake off excess dirt from the root ball and then pack the root ball in a plastic bag, not a pot, to save weight. Then put the whole thing in a box and wedge it tightly with packing material so even if it gets turned upside down, it doesn't move and crush itself. Water well before packing, wait til the last minute, and unpack immediately on arrival. I found that the biggest problem I had moving roses long distance, was the difference in soil types between the old garden and the new one. Not one of those roses lived more than a few years, they all developed root rot because their roots were still encased in heavy adobe clay from the old garden, and now surrounded by a loose gravelly loam in the new garden with WA's famous heavy winter rains. The clay rootball was waterlogged all winter long. Growing in clay wasn't a problem when all the soil was clay, and heavy winter rains aren't a problem when all the soil is the same type, but combining the heavy rain with a ball of clay sitting in gravel was a disaster. It would have been better to bare root them completely that first winter, wash all the clay off even at the loss of most of the roots.

Moving roses - how long before I see growth

Ooh, I'm no expert, but I moved a bunch of roses in April, and planted a bunch of bare root roses at the same time. The ones that I moved grew leaves in 1-2 weeks, got buds in a month, and produced roses, on about the same schedule as the bare root roses. Right now, the "moved" roses are really looking just like the bare root roses - 2-3 feet tall, and producing roses pretty regularly. Nancy in NC

Years ago, at our market garden, I grew sugar baby watermelons very successfully south of you in Orange County, near Port Jervis. Then in recent years, before moving to Maine, I grew them in the Adirondacks, outside Saranac Lake. They were more of a challenge there, but I harvested some. If your 4 year old is like me (and a lot of 4 year olds are, I'm finding out!) he or she won't mind eating them at the tail end of the summer. Stax, I guess so (my current posting date says "last month")! However, I'm now adding a new thread asking for help/advice on my current move. As I said in my earlier post (5 posts up), my earlier move was done by myself using a rental truck. For my current move, in progress, I couldn't find a rental truck from any local rental companies (U-Haul, Penske, etc. My last one was Ryder, which no longer rents to individuals). So I decided to use a local moving company which advertises local and long distance moves. First mistake - I didn't read any reviews then and when I did yesterday, they were horrible! Anyway, like Dianne47, my move is fairly complex, from a house on Long Island to a new house in the wilderness of Northern NY. I wanted to avoid the movers reloading my stuff between trucks, so I specified a one-truck move, which they agreed to. I also have a piano which I am concerned about. They were very good on meeting their pickup time, but I was appalled that they came in a 24 foot Penske rental truck. There were three men, the driver (Ron) and two helpers. We had boxed most stuff into 24 boxes, mostly paintings (my wife is an artist). The first thing they loaded was the piano and, as they lifted it up, one leg fell off (not their fault). So they put the piano in the front of the truck, along with the leg. They carefully wrapped all the furniture and skillfully placed the pieces, along with the boxes in the truck and stabilized them with straps. The truck was 3/4 full. They said that they would deliver the next day. I agreed to pay them 1/2 then and the other 1/2 upon delivery. We drove up to our new house (a 6-hour drive), somewhat concerned that they would get there before we did, but that didn't happen. We waited the rest of the day and, so far, no show (yet - I am writing this the morning of the third day). When I called that afternoon, the company manager said they were in a meeting and would call me back. Several complications: 1. Google has my address mis-located, so I explained to the driver exactly where we lived and he said he understood. 2. For the final 30 miles of the trip, there is no cell service, except for in my town, where there is only Verizon, so I confirmed with the driver that he had Verizon, which he did. 3. They only accept payment via cash, certified check, or one of two phone payment apps which I don't use. So I paid the first half in cash and have enough for the final payment. 4. I have two entrances to my house, the piano and several other pieces of heavy furniture go into my basement - fortunately I have a walk-out basement with two rather large doors, reachable by a dirt driveway. The rest go on the main floor, which has a porch which can be driven up to via a different driveway. The paintings all go up to a loft, reachable by a ladder from the main floor. All of this was explained to the driver who said that it would be no problem. THIS IS WHY I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE SAME DRIVER (AND TRUCK) MADE IT ALL THE WAY! Since the piano was the first in, it would be the last out, so the first unloading should be to the main floor and loft and the second around the back of the house to the basement entrance. That's great Marie! I wish my sister was able to go into something like that instead of the crappy apartment building she is living in. If I can't stay in my house and feel I need help I will sell my two houses and move into one. This way I wouldn't have to decide who to leave the houses to and I would spend the money on a place like yours. My friend's Mom lived in an assisted living place in Windsor a few years ago and it was almost $4,000 a month and that wasn't even in the nicer ones we have now.that I am sure cost more.

i am so happy for you. Your own place within security. People your own age to talk to you, Activities to do if you want or not. Best part the cooking. My husband had moved his mother to one here in Georgia and she made so many friends. Had her own space but she always kept the door open so she could see who was in the hall. Staff was also wonderful. Enjoy. Glad you are back.

Thanks for letting us tag along with you on this new living adventure. My DH and I hope to continue a while longer in our house, but we are interested in investigating the pros and cons of assisted living. You can be our inside 'man'!

What is the name of the organization that owns and manages your place? Is it licensed and inspected by the state or city? What category of communal living is it? (Doesn't sound like it offers skilled nursing care, but maybe?)

I tend to have a lot of questions because I had a bad experience with the buy-in residence/skilled nursing care place my mother went into in the 1970's. The independent living portion was fine. The assisted living part was OK too.The skilled nursing part was a disgrace.

I always thought DH and I would just do a rental arrangement, then choose a skilled nursing facility we knew was good if the need arose.

I'm sure your family is happy for you, also. I know that I worry about my Mother living in her home alone and something happening. It sounds like a great place, good for you.

That's wonderful, I'm so happy for you. I've been trying to convince my mother at her doctors suggestion of the same for the last two years and somehow it just doesn't appeal to her. She's too crumbly to continue with the yard and heavier housework, resists help (86 and significant osteoporosis)

Please enjoy your new surroundings, and take advantage of that dining room! Bliss, someone to cook for you, or snacks/meals in your own suite if you wish. Do you have housekeeping services available as part of your services provided? What about laundry, your own in your apartment or shared laundry facility....

I'm really, truly glad to hear you are comfortable there. Are there other activities you can participate in on the premises if you want to socialize but you don't feel like going out that day?

This sounds like the perfect situation. You come and go as you choose, cook if you want to, be alone if you want to. But, when you don't feel like cooking or feel like company, it's right outside your front door.

You are in a good place to grow old in.
I like that this takes the stress off of your children. The decision was made in a logical and calm manner, not when it became dire.

My parents enjoy living in their Kisco facility here in California -- it sounds very much like your place. They have made many friends, and I know that they are safe when I'm not there.

My Mother lived in an assisted living place and it was very nice and the food was really good. Guests could eat for $5.00 each. She had a one bedroom place, her own kitchen and much the same as you have. That has been a few years ago and it was close to $4,000 a month back then. She did not get to live there too long as she started to need more care and had to go into the nursing home. I am glad you are happy there.

My mother moved to an Asst. Living facility after we lost my dad. It was a brand new facility and she loved it there. Several of her friends were living there too. She was always a very social person and enjoyed all of the events and trips available. She had her car and came and went whenever she wanted. I'm sure your new home will provide lots of fun times for you too.

Sounds like you found the perfect place! I can never understand why people are so against those places. Just the socializing alone would be worth it to me. Would I rather be lonely? Oh H*ll no!!!

My Stepdad insisted on staying in the family home after Mom's death, despite his increasing frailty. We were two hours away so it wasn't easy to check on him. He had some falls and we got him one of those alert pendants for our peace of mind as much as his, after I had to call the police to check on him after I had been unable to reach him by phone for two days. (Turned out he was on a pre-arranged stay in the hospital, which he didn't think to bother telling us about :-/.)
We suggested an assisted living place but he dug his heels in and resisted the idea until finally he went into hospital and his doctor told him he wouldn't be able to go home and live alone with no help. So we took him around to check out different places and moved him into one of his choosing.
He was as happy as a pig in mud! Much happier than he had been for years. No meals to cook, no cleaning to do, plenty of like-minded folks to socialise with. It was such a shame he hadn't made the move earlier, he would have been so much happier all those years.
