My cat Jaz was diagnosed 4 years ago at age 14. August I came close to losing her, she was confused, weak, and instead of her very loud vocal voice she sounded like a newborn kitten. Anyway when I got her to the vet it turns out she was seriously dehydrated; despite her drinking tons of water everyday she was not getting enough. After one subq of 100ml we came home and she ate almost 2 cans of food! I was thrilled; we take water for granted, but it is so important. Everyday she gets 100ml, and now her fur is so soft and thick, she is SO MUCH better.

anyone else have a beloved feline that has CRF? how about everyone post their stories and what they do to make their fur babies better.

I've lost 2 cats over the years to renal failure. In fact, DD adopted a kitty at the beginning of July and while we were filling out the paperwork the subject of the renal failure came up. The technician said they are seeing more and more of it in our area. The vets at that particular practice think it is something environmental in our area. We live in Mid Atlantic. Also, I was never given the option of during the subq fluids as a treatment. The vet just said there was no hope?? Do you do the subq fluid at home? I wish I was given that option since the two I lost were only 5 and 8 years old.

There is a wonderful group on Yahoo that is all about Feline CRF. They were real angels to me when we went thru this with our 18 y.o. baby for the last year of her life. I no longer have the link but I'm sure you can do a search within the Yahoo Groups pages. Good Luck to you.

Hi dmb, I am so sorry to hear about your predicament with your 19 year old cat but I have to say that I thought I was reading about my 18 year old female cat when reading your cat's symptoms. I am at the same place you are - what to do now? However I have gone one step further than you and thought this migh thelp you. I have been giving my cat the Sub Q fluids for her renal failure for the last 2 years now and she really rallied once I started to that. Also at the same time I have been giving her renal support probiotics (2 kinds) to support her kidneys and that plus the fluids gave her back a couple of years for sure. However about 2 weeks ago she started to bang into things and I realized she had gone blind and that my stupid Vet hadn't ever mentioned blood pressure taking especially if the cat has thyroid or kidney issues and my cat has both. She had the radioactive iodine treatment about 3 years ago so I was expecting the kidney issues but after I reached out to a different Vet they told me that her blood pressure probably caused the blindness together with the renal or the thyroid issues. Her thyroid might have gotten worse despite the iodine treatments. Sigh. The new Vet said that she probably had a stroke during the night that I didnt know of and that she was totally blind. I was so upset. Also she has gone totally deaf before this stroke so now she is deaf and blind and last week she took a step backwards and seemed to be acting confused like she did when she had the first stroke. She was starting to adapt to being blind and had figured out where to jump and where not to and I was so excited then she took a backslide. Another stroke? Who knows. I really think you should try the Sub Q and the 2 renal support powders that you just mix into your cats meals (wet is best in food for this) and you will notice a big difference in her health. However the deafness and blindness is another thing. I am trying to decide if her quality of life is worth keeping her going. Now she is so blind that she just seems to be giving up and laying down wherever she is and just goes back to sleep and this is so unlike her. Also she is getting grouchy (Himalyan) and never was like that before. Now she only responds to touch and when I touch her she knows it's either to put a needle behind her neck for the sub q fluids or to stick a pill down her throat for high blood pressure or to move her to the litter box so when I just pick her up to pat her she growls. I mean what kind of life is this now? I don't know. She has been the best cat ever, always gentle and loving and she appears okay in other ways. She is still grooming herself, eating well, pooping well etc but I know her kidneys won't last forever and with the blindness and with no hearing I just don't know. I am giving her a blood pressure med ever since a new med took her blood pressure 2 weeks ago but like I said since that she has slipped. I don't envy your situation because it's mine too but maybe try the sub q and renal support and the blood pressure meds and see what you think. The best of luck with whatever your decision is. I know you will make the decision with love and respect for the cat no matter what. My prayers are with you and your pet.

I'm glad I'm not the only one particular about vets ;) The best vets are not insulted by being presented with information from outside sources or questioned regarding treatment because they're confident in their abilities and open-minded enough to know they can't do it all. In fact, a vet who is willing to admit "this is over my head," gets high marks from me. I often see young vets (sorry Meghane) just out of school that get hung up with a superior attitude and it troubles me. I may not be a vet, but I do know an awful lot about breed-specific health issues and more than anyone about my personal dogs. A vet may be book smart, but not have the real-life experience that makes a vet truly knowing. To me, it's all about being a team. It's taken me years (and an out-of-state move LOL) to finally find a great vet who is smart, down-to-earth and very experienced with my breed. But a trusting relationship is a two-way street and it's my responsibility to give her accurate and detailed information as well. I imagine most of the posters here would be considered dream clients for any vet LOL. My friends and I have had too many personal experiences with vets over the years that ended in disaster or something close to it to blindly place our trust in any one vet. But many owners do - they never question anything because they either hold their vet in a god-like status or just don't want to know. Meghane mentioned that a poster's vet must not have explained a treatment well enough, but I think some of that responsbility has to fall on the client. It's a two-way street. It amazes me when owners aren't proactive, like someone mentioned above. I did it once too, years ago with a highly-respected board-certified opthalmologist who made a misdiagnosis and then tried to cover it up instead of being honest. I called him on it and he wasn't used to that. I get second opinions for anything out-of-the-ordinary and especially like dealing with teaching hospitals like Penn Vet.

1) No, it doesn't matter at all. In fact, I typically aim the needle tip so that the fluids run down over one shoulder or the other. They seem to flow more readily when aimed downward. The only consideration here is that you don't want to admin more than 100 ml in one spot during one admin (it's a rare circumstance that would necessitate more than 100ml to be administered during a single session, anyway). If the fluid pocket becomes too large, the cat will become uncomfortable and likely uncooperative. I have also, on occasion, placed a needle in a spot that is clearly uncomfortable for the cat. When that happens, I just remove the needle, reposition it slightly, and try again. It's important to note that a needle will dull significantly after the first stick, so it's generally better to use a fresh needle if you have to re-stick. 2) The rule of thumb is to use a spot within the "saddle" area (meaning the area where a saddle would be placed if the animal was a horse). That said, most cats become a LOT more sensitive and tender the further behind the shoulders you stick them, so it's best to stay at or slightly behind the shoulder area. 3) B12 supplementation is often helpful for cats receiving fluids, because B vits are excreted in urine. HOWEVER, it is NOT a good idea to mix B12 into the fluid bag itself. B12 degrades quickly when exposed to light and/or heat. Also, anything mixed into the fluids holds the potential to contaminate the fluids with impurities that may conceivably cause abscesses or other problems at the injection sites. Instead of mixing B12 into the fluid bag, you should request a prescription for injectible B12 to keep at home in your own refrigerator. Then once a week, you can admin B12 with subQ fluids by injecting the dose directly into the injection port in the LINE (not the bag). That way, you don't have to stick your cat with another needle, AND the B12 won't enter the fluid bag itself. Of course, you'll need to buy lines with an injection port (in case the lines you're using now don't have an injection port). This is how I give my kidney cats their weekly B12 with subQ's. After the first 25-50ml of fluids have gone in, I inject the B12 into the line. That way, there is enough of a fluid pocket already present to help warm and dilute the B12 as it enters the body, making it virtually undetectable to the cat. AND there is enough fluid continuing through the line to push the B12 through and clear the line. The most popular needle for use in administering subQ fluids to cats by caretakers is the Terumo 20 ga x 1" Ultra Thin Wall needle available here: Terumo needles Here's a link to the IV sets (with injection port) I buy from the same source: IV lines I have never found a local source for buying a single bag or two of fluids at a time (other than my vet). I always buy by the case and get substantial savings that way. It is important, however, to call around to ALL local pharmacies and obtain prices on cases (and make sure you are pricing the name number of bags per case, since that varies by manufacturer and fluid type). Here's my experience: I had 3 cats, two yellow males and a yellow female, all from the same litter. They showed up here as feral kittens. After feeding them for awhile, we finally tamed them, got vaccinations, spayed and neutered and started keeping them inside. About 5 years ago,when they were about 9, one male got sick. I took him to the vet, he was diagnosed with renal failure. The doctor said we might try giving him fluid and trying to keep him alive, but she didn't sound very hopeful about the outcome, so I had him euthanized. I had bloodwork on the other 2 done then, and they were normal, although the other male was in the high normal range. The vet didn't suggest that I should have him rechecked after some time had passed, so I assumed I didn't need to worry about his kidneys. After about a year and a half passed, the other male lost weight (down to about 8 pounds from about 11) and I suspected he had renal failure too. I took him to the vet, a different doctor saw him, and it was renal failure. He convinced me to do the fluid and see if he would improve. So I did. After about 3 days of force feeding him canned Hills AD, he started eating dry Hills KD and gained weight. His appetite was fine once he started eating. He eventually gained weight to 10 pounds, and maintained it until a few months ago. He started out with fluid every day until his creatinine and bun went down some. Then every other day. Then every third day. Early on, he was anemic, so the doctor started him on EPO injections. That took care of the anemia and he didn't develop the antibodies that some cats develop. After a few months I asked the doctor (this time it was the doctor who had seen the first cat) if I needed to be concerned about his blood pressure, and she said that she was sure his blood pressure was fine. (They couldn't check it anyway, no Doppler machine.) One evening about a week later I realized he was blind. I took him to the emergency clinic in Charlotte, NC and his blood pressure was so high it wasn't readable. They kept him overnight, got his bp down, and sent him home with a prescription for Norvasc and told me to give him Pepcid daily, as well. That took care of that problem. While at the emergency place, which is also a specialty veterinary clinic, he was transferred to internal medicine, and was fortunate to get an excellent doctor who told me his specialty is nephrology. I started taking him there for his regular bloodwork and checkups, even though it was more expensive. There's no doubt in my mind that taking him to the specialist made a big difference in how well he did for so long. As time passed, and his creatinine started rising as his remaining kidney got worse, I increased the fluid to 200 ml. once a day. His creatinine never did go down near normal. It was always over 5, and even when it was around 8 his appetite was good and he seemed to feel fine. That's how I gauged how he felt, by how he was eating and how he acted. About 6 weeks ago his creatinine had gone up from 6.6 to 10. I could tell he was not feeling as well, and he wasn't eating as much. I increased his EPO injections to once a week, from every other week. Dr. Jaeger said EPO seems to help lower the creatinine in some cats. When I took him back about 10 days ago his creatinine had only gone down to 9.6 from 10.1. His blood pressure was a little high, too. He wasn't eating much at all, so I got Cyproheptadine (appetite stimulant). That was on Friday, July 6. He was scheduled for another appointment on July 26. When I brought him home that Friday, I persuaded him to eat a little canned Hills AD twice that evening. Saturday he ate a little more of it. Sunday he wouldn't eat it, so I tried no salt added canned tuna. He ate just a few bites. He also was not drinking much at that point. I was still giving him 200 ml fluid daily, and his medications. Monday he wouldn't eat at all and had not drank more than a couple tablespoons of water. Thinking it might take a while for the appetite stimulant to work, I put off calling the vet. Monday night I opened his mouth like I would to give him a pill and popped a little tuna in. He swallowed it but wasn't interested in eating at all. Tuesday I called the specialist and he said to bring him in. We had discussed at the previous appointment that he was near the end, and the doctor and I agreed that I wouldn't force feed him since he wasn't going to get any better, but the doctor thought he'd be ok for another 3 weeks or so. Our objective was to keep him comfortable if possible. By Monday night I had already made up my mind that it was time to end it before he got in worse shape. I had also realized Monday that he wasn't urinating as much as he should have been for the past couple days, so his remaining kidney function wasn't enough to produce much urine. I weighed him and it looked like he had gained about a pound, but I know it was fluid because he hadn't eaten enough to put on any weight. So when I took him to the doctor Tuesday morning he examined him and said that there was nothing we could do to help him at this point. So I had him euthanized. I hated to do it but I know it was the right thing to do. I feel better about it knowing that he only seemed to feel really really bad for a couple days at the most. Monday night, before I took him to the doctor Tuesday, he jumped up on the bed and I petted him for a good while. He purred while I petted him, even though he hadn't purred for at least a month. Now, here's what happened with his sister. She had some spells of vomiting, starting 6 months ago. The regular vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. Her bloodwork was fine, although her calcium was a little high. After a couple days she'd be fine, and start eating again. She had gradually lost some weight, but he attributed it to her getting older (she was obese at 15 pounds for a long time, and even when she got down to 10 pounds she looked chubby, because she was a small cat). After one of the vomiting spells, I took her to the emergency clinic at night because I thought she might be dehydrated. They did bloodwork and it was fine, but the specific gravity of her urine was not quite normal, and could possibly be an indicator of early renal disease. They didn't suggest she needed to be transferred to internal medicine, so I didn't worry about it. That was in April, I think. She seemed fine for a while. Then about 6 or 7 weeks ago, she was sick again so I took her to the regular vet, mostly because I thought she might need fluid and I couldn't tell if she was dehydrated, so I didn't want to do fluid at home if she didn't need it. They did bloodwork and her creatinine and bun levels showed renal failure. Other than the urinalysis being somewhat abnormal earlier, we had no clue that it would be renal failure. I don't remember how high it was, but she needed IV fluid at least overnight, so the new young female vet at the regular vet's office said that if it was her cat she'd take her to the specialty vet, and since he was already seeing my male, I knew he'd see the female too. They took her as an emergency patient, hospitalized her, and kept her for about 4 days. He said her kidneys were worse than the male's. Her creatinine didn't go down much, but I brought her home and started the same routine with her, fluid, blood pressure meds, pepcid. She seemed to do a little better, and started to eat, so I took her for her followup appointment around the first of June. Her creatinine wasn't going down much, but we didn't think she was in any danger of getting worse quickly and her appetite had improved. That afternoon when I brought her home from the appointment she went to the bowl and ate some food. I thought she was ok, but from then on, she went downhill fast. I had an appointment for her about a week later on Tuesday, June 12, but she got so sick I took her to the emergency clinic the following Saturday night instead of waiting til Tuesday. She wouldn't eat, I was forcefeeding her canned Hills AD. She hated getting the pills but got too weak to object much. She couldn't even walk to the litter box. I had to carry her. They called Sunday morning to say she had perked up some, but wasn't ready to go home. So I thought she might be ok. Then Sunday night the emergency doctor called and said she wasn't doing well at all. She wasn't producing urine and had fluid in her chest and abdominal cavities. That doctor had called the specialist (who had not been able to see her that time because of an out of town conference, but had just got back into town), and he agreed that there was nothing they could do for her, so I had her euthanized. It was harder with her, because with the male, I had about 3 years to know it was going to happen eventually. She had seemed ok (except for the occasional vomiting spells) up until a few months ago. The specialist said that the male had done much better than he would have predicted when he first saw him with the high blood pressure, and the female went down much quicker than he expected, although he knew her kidneys were worse than the males. The male was diagnosed in September of 2004, I think, and he lasted until this past Tuesday, July 10. The female was diagnosed this past May 21, and I lost her on June 10. Exactly a month apart. One thing the specialist said early on was that you never can predict how long the cat will live or how they'll respond to treatment. He didn't think my male would live much longer from when he first saw him in Dec. 2004, and he's had a lot of renal failure patients.

It's a shame your vet did not discuss subq's with you, and you r babies were so young! Yes I believe had you a different ver your babies would still be alive. May of us are told our cats will not live long, and they have lived years beyond. There is a lot of hope with CRF cats. Some have lived to be 23, I'm sorry you did you lost your babies. Do you have anymore furbabies? Like Lynn said there is a great group on yahoo where lots of us (over 7,000 I think) that have cats with CRF, and there is a lot of great advice. If you have anymore cats, even if they don't have CRF it is good to get on the list ad learn, that way if it ever happens again ou will be prepared.

The vet tech showed me at the office how to give Jaz her subq's and after a few hard starts I don't even have to restrain her, we heat the fluids and my partner holds the bag while I sit on the floor (Jaz on her heated blanket) then quickly I put the needle in. We got with a smaller one, less pain and while it takes a little longer it is well worth it for our baby. I'm sorry for your loss!

Kendall, yes we have 3 male neutered cats. One of the three, Oliver has had the urinary blockage in the past. He takes Cosequin in his wet food to prevent a recurrence. The others are a grey and white fatty, Handsome and a tuxedo teen kitten, Louis. Thanks for the info and I will be better prepared if this occurs again in the future.

Our Furby developed kidney stones when he was 4. Diagnosed as CRF a year later, when he blocked again. That's when we learned about fluid therapy and other meds to help him. (Needs Pepcid and a potassium supplement, and Cardizem for a related heart condition.) He's been great since then, and he's 8 now. He gets bloodwork and an ultrasound to check for stones and look at his heart every 6 months.

There are options for CRF kitties, but sadly, some vets don't realize this. Lots of people think we're nuts for doing what we do for Furby. Meds 3x/day and fluids every other day. But he's worth it. And gelcaps are wonderful things. ;-)

Labmomma, we lived in central VA when Furby formed the stones. Our vet mentioned that he (yes, the vet himself) gets kidney stones as well, and he was told or read that the highest incidence of human kidney stones in the country was in the Mid-Atlantic area. After we heard that, we put Furby on distilled water. Unfortunately, that didn't work, because he didn't like the distilled water and didn't drink as much and formed stones again. After his second blockage, we put him back on tap water, but by that time, we were in Ohio on well water. He drinks much more now (he loves to drink from the bathtub faucet), and the sub-q fluids no doubt help a lot as well. Yes, we do it at home, but we prefer not to use the dripline and to just use a big syringe and inject it. Furby is waaay too active to hold still for a few minutes for his fluids, and the injection takes under a minute. We do warm the fluid first, as that seems to make things much more comfortable for him. (Makes sense!) And he grumps about it a little, but it's really pretty easy to do.

Kendal, that's awesome about Jaz! Glad to hear she's doing so well.

Thanks Diana! I just keep my hopes up that she remains stabilized. She still has some off days, but I try not to dwell too much on how much time she has left and just enjoy her a day at a time.

Have you tried Furby on filtered water? We drink it, and it tastes much better. also the vet told us it was best for Jaz to drink filtered water. The taste is good, and she loves it. It's not too expensive and worth it if your Furby drinks it.

I have a cat named Jazz with CRF too!! Only he's a boy.
The first vet I took him to said he would "last" about a year, well, it's been over 5 years and he's doing great!! Of course I have a different vet now. She's great. He gets 100 ml sub q's every three days, Petinic vitamin 2 times a day, eats IVD modified food,and drinks distilled water. I also have another CRF cat, Rex, who is also hyperthyroid as well. Same regime, plus Tapazole twice a day. He is about three years since dx. and is doing great as well!!
I think that a lot of cats that people think are just old are really CRF, and they could be helped. I had a cat growing up that, looking back, had all the symptoms of CRF, of course we didn't know it, and she just eventually died. She was 19 though.

Something you might want to consider is asking your veterinarian about Captopril. If your cat has high blood pressure (definitely a problem with hyperthyroidism), then the high BP should be managed, and Captopril is one of the best choices in this case. If your cat is diabetic, and has blood pressure high enough to justify treatment, again, Captopril should be considered. Your vet will probably have to order the "people" version and calculate the appropriate dose.

Okay--WHY Captopril? Because studies have shown that it protects the kidneys. If I found that I had Type II diabetes or any kidney problems, I'd insist my doc switch me from my calcium channel blocker to Captopril pronto.

None of this means that you should skip all the other things, especially the sub-q fluids, but it's one more thing that could make kitty's life better longer. That is, if the kittymonster will tolerate a daily pill (I have one hellkitty who believes the appropriate response to ANY oral medication is to foam at the mouth and howl).

Hi Rita,

Jaz is short for Jasmin, Jaz is a great nick though (o: Wow, to have 2 cats with the disease, it's hard enough making sure Jaz gets her meds and fluids. I hate having to poke her everyday, but it is quick and how it helped makes it worth it. No she has been vomiting off and on, yesterday right after having a bowel movement. There were two big round ones, and while not really hard they were big enough to cause her a problem. I have her on a stool softener, and it's hard to find the balance of how much to give, sometimes the dose the vet prescribed is enough, and other times I have to add a little in the middle of the day. Thanks for writing and I'm glad your Jazz is doing great. Are you on the yahoo e-mail list for CRF felines? It is a great help, a lot of mail but worth it to be able to talk to people who are going through the same thing as we are.

Thanks for the tip, and yes it is hard to give pills, I've got 3 so far, a BP med, pepcid, and the appetite stimlulant, then I have th powered stool softener. It's a challenge to make sure she gets them all. I use baby food, chicken is her favorite and grind the pills in there. It works most of the time, and makes it easy that way. What a trip, a foaming at themouth howling kitty, now that would be a site to see!!

My Jazz is short for Jazzpurr. He's a big beautiful all black boy!! Ha Ha. How about your Jaz? I remember the first few times we gave fluids to him, I cried. It does get better though. They pick up on your reactions, so if you are calm, it helps them be calm. At least that's what I try to do for myself!!! I think the throwing up thing just kind of comes with disease, I know I have to deal with it occasionally. My Rex tends to get constipated, so that's a lot of fun too. My vet said to try canned pumpkin............of course he hates it, but Jazz and Gizmo (yes, a third..I am a bit of that crazy cat lady!! Ha Ha) LOVE it!!. Only they don't need it.
I am a member on yahoo, have been for quite a few years. I don't go on there much anymore, it seems like it used to be better. I don't know. Maybe just me. I will have to check it out again.

re: Dehydration. I have had cats in the past with all kinds of urinary issues.

Now with this cat, I bought this new automatic watering 'fountain' thing. It has a charcoal filter, and drizzles water like a fountain automatically. My cat drinks very well and stays very hydrated. I credit it for hairball prevention as we have not had a problem so far, and she's 3 years old.

Jaz is a mix Egyptian Mau/tabby/Savannah, she is quite the beauty, and pretty big, she was 16 lbs, but because of CRF she now weights just a little over 9 lbs. She looked more like an Savannah/Egyptian when she was younger, but as she grew older more of the tabby came out. She stills has the spots, and rings around her tail like a serval/Savannah,and like many cats with a more "exotic" mix in them her hind les are longer then her front. She is special to me no doubt about it!

My cat doesn't have renal failure but she had bladder crystals and repeated infections. I changed her food to a special urinary tract dry food. I divide her food into three servings and soak it with 1/3 cup of water each time. So she gets a total of a cup a day, she's 15lbs. The correct water amount is calculated by dividing the number of ounces the cat weighs in half. Her urine is no longer overly acidic and no new infections since we started the forced water.
I did loose another cat recently to an unknown mass, outside of his loungs and his kindneys suddenly started shutting down. He stopped eating, the SUB Q fluids didn't help. Unfortunalty it was all so sudden that we couldn't even operate to find out what the mass was. I was even force feeding him with a tube for several weeks. Just sharing this to say I know what you all are going through with the sick kitties. I've had more than my share over the years. The one thing people can't say is that I don't spend enough money on my pets at the vet!! I think I paid for his second vacation home!
