Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Shampoo

I got seduced by the commercials--the ones with the Hollywood star (whose name escapes me) with the perfect body and extraordinary hair doing yoga--and bought a bottle of the shampoo. I chose the Volumizing Root Boost kind.

I tried it for the first time this morning, and was going to post a glowing review here. My hair feels so soft and light, the way it does when I come out of a salon. Volumizing shampoos usually make my hair hard to comb through right after shampooing, but the comb just slid through my hair this time.

I used no product in my hair--just the blow dryer and a flat iron. Dazzling shine, and I love the way my hair feels!

BUT . . . I wanted to include a link with my post, so I looked it up on Amazon. Lots of good reviews, but lots of bad ones too. People talking about the shampoo causing hair loss. Then I looked it up on Makeupalley.com: Same thing, only worse. Major hair loss, and some reported scalp problems.

My hair is already fine and thin; I can't afford to lose any! So I won't be using this shampoo again. It's too bad . . . I thought I'd made a great find.

yikes, I'd stop using it IMMEDIATELY! :p

I love the Garnier Fructis product line for hair! Maybe they have something you're looking for. I LOVE to use both their 'sleek & shine' shampoo and conditioner during the winter... far less static problems. :p I tried their moisturizing shampoo and it's really wild! it has tiny beads in it and feels like it's almost carbonated, lathers up really thick, and makes my hair squeak like crazy as I rinse it. :o) I have a ton of hair and it made mine super-voluminous so it might be a great shampoo for you.

A while ago, I picked up the trial sizes of the Clear Scalp "nourishing" shampoo and conditioner. I admit that I used the 2 only once -- I didn't like the way my hair felt, and with my hair not as thick as it once was, I think I probably saw a lot more hair in the drain cover than I wanted to. I'll try it another time or two before I decide whether to toss them.

As for squeaky hair, I think there's still a debate over whether that's stripping too much beneficial stuff from the hair. I know hair is dead, but ...

Now, Moroccan oil is the "in" thing for shampoos and styling products to add. I do want to try one just to feel my hair after that, but I'll only buy trial sizes for this type of stuff. WalMart had some brand -- Pantene, I think -- in a huge bottle -- way too much shampoo. Hate feeling stuck with a huge bottle.

I was a beautician & any perm should easily last 3 mos so she is getting the perms way too often. I have friends that get perms & they last about 3 months so 6 weeks is taking advantage of a client(patron-your wife) Hair should not be washed for 3 days after a perm or you relax the curl & it will get straight too soon. Most older folks heads sweat at times if they get overheated, wear heavy crocheted or woolen caps on their heads(or wigs) & the head can get very smelly- I call it old people smell. I know some people get used to it on their spouse or on themselves & no longer notice it or could be their sense of smell is terribly diminished. I was called to hospital or nursing home in the past as you have to be licensed to cut hair & wash it in CA. Some hair smelled really bad, relatives never mentioned that, probably to be polite to their relative or they had gotten used to it. I think caregivers appreciate taking care of folks with clean hair(& showered) I received many compliments about how good my dad smelled & what a pleasure it was to care for him. Also a clean head has another advantage as not nearly as likely to get infection from scratching their head & breaking open the fragile skin. A clean head just makes a person more comfortable & even if your wife can't express it I'm sure she would not want to smell around her friends. You are a wonderful hubby to care about her & take this step. About hair length if she usually wore it fairly short about to the neck or inch below then that is probably what she would prefer. 3 to 5 inch long hair is easier to keep looking nice & with a perm & weekly washing all she should need is just a comb or brush threw it to look presentable. If you don't remember how long she wore it few years ago Just look at pics of her.

If you want more volume, but don't want to go the 'volumizing shampoo route', try reading the ingredients in the shampoo you usually use. If you see sodium laurel sulphate--immediately toss the bottle in the trash, even if it's almost full. SLS is terrible for both hair and scalp. It's clinically used to produce rashes to test medications for them. It strips your hair, makes it thin and unhealthy. And unfortnately, it's in many, many shampoos. Why? It makes them foam. Totally there for 'show'. Since most of us are adults and making elaborate hair sculptures isn't a necessary part of shampooing for us--we don't need SLS. I use an organic shampoo--it doesn't suds like the regular supermarket shampoos do, BUT it cleans my hair beautifully, and unbelievably, my hair is way, way thicker and healthier now--at age 60--than it was when I was 50 (and still using supermarket shampoo). Just switching to a SLS free shampoo will make a noticeable difference in the thickness/health of your hair. Of course, you have to wait patiently for the new, healthy hair to grow out. And you need to educate yourself about SLS--it's one of those components that goes by many names. Seriously, though, I don't think my hair has been this healthy for about 40 years. WELL worth the extra $$$ for a better shampoo.

update: We still aren't 100% shampoo free. We cut down to only washing every other day, and then substituting every other of those with baking soda. I've gotten to where I look forward to a fully baking soda cleansing routine. I certainly like it even better than days when I shampoo (the one which was chemical free). We have finally run out of the chemical free shampoo and now it is time to be 100%. My son's hair was crazy oily all the time (no matter what type of shampoo or how often he cleaned it). He'd get out of the shower and it'd still look greasy?! Going this route has sent him back to the non-greasy days, AND his face acne has reduced. His hair is so soft. He loves it. Me? I love it. I feel like my hair so much less stressed. And people keep offering compliments without my asking. People who have no reason to talk to me about my hair, e.g. someone standing behind me in church and we've never talked about hair? So I think that's pretty unbiased. No one knows in real life knows we've done, except on this forum (and anyone reading it). When it gets to the point someone says, I really love how great your hair looks! What's your secret? Then I'll know I have "arrived". It's getting there. I appreciate the feedback y'all gave me before trying it. What was really cool? It was super easy to get through camping this weekend. I washed it before we went out and then this morning. But it was fine all weekend! Let me focus on the more fun stuff. ____________________ Jodi, did you stay conditioner only? How's that going?

I actually skipped washing my hair yesterday morning. It looked terrible, but the good thing is I work from home. I ordered terriks bar soap and conditioner. Terriks, what do you keep them in? I'm also going to order the Keratase in travel size. I want to find something I like, but a part of me is hoping I don't like the Keratase, because of the price. I already bought Dove Oxygen Moisture based on a recommendation by the Paula's Choice staff. I started using it in the winter when my hair was starting to seem more thin. Once summer hit and the frizzies started, I put it away until next winter. I'll have to see what the difference is between it and Dove Daily Moisture. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!

I like the Garnier line too. One of my favorites is their Hydra Recharge shampoo. I also use their root booster regularly and "Shake Effect" gel sometimes.

Pammyfay, I was given a pricey Moroccan oil shampoo. It was a little heavy for my fine hair, and I felt it also darkened a bit (a big no-no! LOL).

I'm wondering if Unilever will find itself facing a big class-action law suit over hair loss.

Hydra Recharge is the one I called "moisturizing", so I guess that was a good suggestion. lol!

Have you tried taking biotin? it will usually increase hair growth -- but everywhere -- meaning head, legs, etc.

... over the top, at least.

Why is it that men's hair seems to stay intact around the edges ... where it continues to need cutting??

Shampoo should be just plain mild soap to remove dust and dirt.(Unless you only shampoo during your annual bath! LOL) Rinse well. The conditioner adds back clean 'texture' stripped -- along with the dirt -- by the shampoo..

Lotsa lather is meaningless, and usually means the formula contains the chemical laureth sulfate to make it foam.

Talk to a dermatologist for recommendations. Ours walked the aisles of drug stores and learned that most shampoos and body washes contain formaldahyde (has other names) as a preservative -- and sodium laureth for 'foam'.

DH uses plain, cheap glycerin bar soap for hair and body -- after having bad skin reactions to things he'd used for decades..

PartyMusic, I took biotin a couple of years ago when I lost hair from being out in the sun while taking doxycycline. I think it worked; in any case, my hair grew back. ;-)

Perhaps I should take it preemptively starting today.

When I shampoo and it starts to "not" work anymore, It is a build up... so I unpoo.... I use baking soda and warm water to wash my head and hair... then rinse with apple cider vinegar.... no your head won't smell if you rinse with clear warm water after....

Really really soft shiny hair.

I was listening - not watching - someone on television just within the last couple of days recommending the baking soda to remove dulling products buildup in hair, have not taken the time to try it yet. I'm not sure my hair is particularly dull, but I do use product, a styling gel, light spray...

I couldn't see how much baking soda she was using with my back to the TV and doubt measuring is necessary, but she was saying to mix it with a couple tablespoons of your own shampoo, wash, rinse, once every week or two.

Morz8, baking soda is a exfoliant/abrasive, etc. I wash my face daily with baking soda plus cephafil, about a tablespoon of each.

I'd use 1/2 and 1/2 shampoo and baking soda for the results desired.

I keep a plastic bottle of baking soda in the shower for everyday facial scrubbing.
