These days, a printer is almost a disposable item. You can sometimes get a new printer cheaper than the cost of 2 ink cartridges. The downside of your situation is that you don't know if the printer you buy today will be compatible with Win8 when it is released. When Win8 is released, printers that are compatible with it probably won't be discounted much...if at all. I have an HP Officejet 4500 which does an ok job of print-copy-scan-fax and is available in both wired and wireless. It does not tolerate off-brand ink cartridges but it does work well. It might be okay to get you to the day when you get a Win8 computer and a printer that works with it.

You know, that might work, been in the same situation myself, but I do prefer to have colors for inks sometimes, so keep up with the both of them. I get refills of ink from Walgreens, much cheaper, unless there is a special on ink refills at WM, or Staples, wherever I can find it. Also, sometimes, cleaning the spots where the ink comes out of the little holder, with a Q-tip, and some alcohol, sometimes allows more ink to come out of the printer, but don't use anything but alcohol! Also, never touch that area, as even the oil from your fingers can plug those fine holes!

I would advise you not to get one with all of those little cartridges. If one is low on ink, you can't print anything. I don't know which is best but I have always used HP and will continue to do so. When I bought my first one, years ago, I was told print heads can be a problem on printers. HP has theirs in the ink cartridge so you get a new one with every replacement. I don't use the printer much any more, so I set it to print in black only. It will print even if the color cartridge is low on ink. I just read your post again and you said ink jet.
