Anyone near Ocean City Maryland??

I'm wanting to go to a beach while I'm still able to walk fairly well, if I can talk DH into it. Looking for a fairly quiet area, motel as opposed to big hotel.

All we want to do is relax, walk on the beach, take pictures and EAT. Any ideas?

I don't have suggestions for a place to stay..it has been too long since I lived close OC.

But check this out to see the boardwalk and weather for each day.

I always read the reviews at tripadvisor, that will give you a good idea of what you can expect from each place. You might want to look into a Bed & Breakfast or a condo rental instead of a hotel.

Feral would be non-native in this case. The use of feral is generally associated with domestic non-native animals which have reverted to a wild state. The most common that one hears about are cats, dogs, and pigs. Cats and pigs are non-native to North America but often establishing wild colonies. In all cases, their breeding will find them reverting to a wild type. Feral cat colonies usually revert to striped tabbies. Dog colonies revert to a yellow cur similar to the Australian dingo. Pigs revert to a long hairy beast. I'm not certain if there is a good word to describe non-native plant varieties which have escaped from cultivation and become nuisances. Dandelions, kudzu, quack grass, multiflora rose, and a lot of others may have a lot of names of which perhaps only half would be allowed here! Some references would use the word "naturalized". Pollination within the colony of some plant species remove certain domestic traits and they eventually may revert to something close to their original wild ancestors. That's why a lot of the wild garlic leeks of the south are more like their original forms which still grow wild in Europe. They are growing wild but non-native and not exactly like the cultivated domestic variety. It's nearly also so with the topsetting "wild" onions which are found from Texas to Georgia. All had tame origins and at one time may have been brought to this continent as a single species. Now I can see small differences from 3 separate locations. All are now growing "wild" as escaped or abandoned domestic things. And that's exactly the same situation with feral cats and dogs! Martin

It turns out that "Junior" is a HY male Anna's hummingbird! The MOS was out yesterday and banded him. That's the good part. The sad part for me anyway is that he departed about 4 hours later. So, if there are any people still looking at these posts I hope that you still have your feeders up, he may be visiting soon, I hope.

Its sad to see so many landscapers with so little knowledge around here. Im glad that Southern Magnolias and Crape Myrtles are finally used a lot around here, but about 10 years ago I saw a wealthy community with lots of palms right near me. But there was a problem. First, they used hurricane cut sabal palmettos and Butias which is something that you cannot get away with growing without protection until about Virginia Beach. And second, they planted them in September! Maybe they would of put up a good fight if they were at least planted in the spring, but they were dead by New Years. I am seeing some people plant windmill palms now which is great to see (a few are surviving the winter too!), but I have yet to see one nice sized needle palm! I really doubt that a large needle palm would have a problem in our winters, and if you plant them close the south side of a home, they would probably really thrive! -Alex

The last time we were there with my 90 y.o. MIL, we stayed at the Dunes. Not too expensive, esp. off-season, at the far end of the boardwalk, rooms were nice and ocean-front and a nice OF terrace with chairs and afternoon tea. Off-season, it's a quiet town and a lot of restaurants are not open. We did find nice ones but we had to drive. Oh, on-site parking also.

I, too, would recommend the Dunes Manor Hotel, just two blocks north of where the boardwalk ends. Last Oct., my husband and I stayed there. He uses a wheelchair, sometimes, and the access to the boardwalk was fairly easy.

I've only been to OC, Md once--have you been before? If not, I'm afraid you may be vastly disappointed. It's one of those places where they've built horrible high rises right on the beach, so no one else has any view or sea breeze. It's very over-developed, very commercial, too crime-ridden for my taste.

It sounds as if you're looking for a lovely, quiet, more high-end beach visit. Have you considered driving a few more miles north, getting on the ferry, and spending a few days in Cape May, NJ? From what you're asking, I think it sounds more like what you want. It's a lovely Victorian seaside town. Lots of lovely B & B's, nothing too glitzy or commercial. Lovely restaurants. Not super-crowded. Very sedate and classy. And if you do want a little night life, you're only a stone's throw from Wildwood, and about a half hour or so from AC and OC (the NJ one--that's much more family oriented than it's MD counterpart). With the hopes you're pinning on this trip, I'd just hate to see you disappointed the way I was when I once visited OC, MD.

Consider driving a couple miles up the road a little. I drive down to those beaches a couple times a year. (Rehobeth, Dewey, Bethany, and Ocean City)
If you want crazy people, traffic and congestion, go to OC. I prefer Rehobeth. It has the boardwalk, plenty to eat, more families, lots of boutique-style shops and not many tall buildings.
Dewey caters to same sex couples and is a nice beach town if that doesn't bother you.
Bethany is very quiet compared to the others.
Yes, if you go off-season you really have to look hard for a decent restuarant that is open.
Also...take an afternoon to go to Assateague to see the wild ponies. In addition to the ponies, if you want a really quiet day, you can go to the beach there, too.

Just don't go to Assateague in the summer - the mosquitos will eat you alive. :)

I think the OTHER OC is the better one. I've been going to OCNJ all my life and still love it.

I've only been to OC and Rehoboth once and wasn't impressed by the beach on the coast in that area. Probably didn't help either that it was in July, peak tourist season. (or that I grew up on island beaches with palm trees and light sand)
I believe some of the gulf Florida beaches uneffected by the oil would be attractive to you. Flamey goes there every year. She would know the in's and out's for that area. Several Kt's call it home. April, Tiger, Liz???
I'm sure you have your reasons for going to the east coast. If it's for a pretty beach, ah, well....

Any beach town will be crazy in the summer - when are you planning on going? Check out Chincoteague VA. Don't go when the pony penning is - either weekend. We have a mobile home there and I like it until July and then all H breaks loose.. The beach is not developed. You can't even buy a can of soda there. You do need to buy a beach pass though. Downtown is quaint with enough shopping for anyone unless you like designer stuff.
I like going to Ocean City - for a day now and then. Sometimes big and noisy can be fun.
