BM solid stain on fence - question about when to do second coat

I have just finished putting one coat of Benjamin Moore solid stain on my pressure treated wood fence. I have a lot of other home projects that I want to get to and it is time consuming to do the fence. I live in Canada and get cold winters so within a month, fence staining will no longer be possible. I'd prefer to do the 2nd coat of stain on the fence next spring if that is okay.

How necessary is a 2nd coat of paint? And if it is preferred, will it matter if I put it on soon after the first coat of stain (sometime in the next few weeks), or is it okay to do it next spring instead?

It's just a matter of building up the coating really. More coats will fill in the wood pores more and get you better coverage and an additional coat will give your wood better protection from the elements but letting it go for one winter isn't going to be the worst thing in the world at all.

Sorry to thread jack OP - but related to this a question @paintguy: I have a BM painted pressured treated fence like Scarlett001 that I had painted October 2013.

What is does professional wisdom say when to repaint it for protection purposes?

Yes, the sprayed paint should dry down flat. If it's dryng with an orange peel look, then that is likely a problem with atomization. The paint not atomizing can really occur because of any number of reasons....wrong tip, wrong fan size, wrong pressure setting, wrong temperature of material, wrong temperature of the air, wrong paint, wrong primer, paint applied too heavy, paint not applied heavy enough, overspray, etc. Were the doors laying flat when sprayed or upright? Sometimes if they are sprayed upright, gravity can actually make the paint sag a little bit and that may end up looking like an orange peel. You could try to sand it out. You can paint over the oil based paint with latex, but it needs to be dull and you may even want to reprime.

Solid stains can peel. When it becomes time to recoat, it is messier to remove old solid stain. Solid stains are a lot like paint. I used on on my last house siding to cover over cedar plank. If the plank were relatively new, I would have preferred a semitransparent to preserve more of the look of real wood. The solid stain used basically plastic coated(acrylic) the wood. It is durable and fine for a vertical surface where it can last over 10 years before a recoating is needed. Looking at the manufacturer's labels, claimed life of a stain job(which is always longer than real world life) is quite short on a deck or porch where the stain is subject to traffic. Thus the extra work on next recoat to strip off old coat is more significant than on a vertical surface. My current house has either paint or solid stain covering over a bad condition cedar deck. This backfired on the seller of the house because the house did not sell quick enough. By the time I bought it, the coating was peeling badly revealing the mess that awaited to either replace the deck of undergo a major repair and resurface job. In summary, can be done but messier to recoat and hides real wood. If you do this, be sure to expend extra effort to prep wood since adhesion is critical to long life and labor of redoing/fixing is much higher.

White paint will last much longer and with much less maintenance. If a wood has any color at all---as in pressure treated----the white stain will be next to useless. It will look more like washed out white wash. Plus, the sun will fade it in a short time. Shouild you decide to paint the fence, you will need to use a good sealing primer first, such as Bullseye 123 from Zinsser or most oil based primers will work. Oil based primer is a bit more difficult to apply, however, than water based 123. Then use a good exterior latex enamel house paint. Pressure treated wood, when dry, can be painted immediately. It is difficult to get a large number of dry pickets, however. Wet ones---that ooze noisture when a screw head compresses the wood----will need 4 to 6 months to dry. Cedar can be painted on installation, as a rule. But using cedar, which is naturally weather resistant, and painting it is kinda expensive.

Are stains and water protectors (makes the water bead on top of the wood) different? I stained/water protected our deck 3 years ago with an oil based brand, and it doesn't peel off at all, it just soaks in...but it still disappears (for us anyway). I don't know if the wood is just dry and quickly sucks it up, or if the sun breaks it down or what. But it desperately needs to be done again. So I don't know if I just used crappy stuff or if retreating the wood is just going to be a every-second-year kinda thing. Ugh. If we ever build a deck again, we'll spend money on metal spindles. I HATE doing those stupid spindles!

It depends on the sun. In areas where there is no sun, you can get 8 to 10 years or more with a solid color stain. In areas where the sun is always shining, you may need to recoat every 2 years. Also, for fences where the wood is actually in the ground or near it, you may need more maintenance there, especially if the wood is actually sitting on piles of snow or sitting in rainwater. I would just look at the wood periodically and see how much of the coating has weathered away to determine when it's time for another application. Of course, as a painter I notice that it is a rare person that actually stays on top of this sort of thing...most people wait until it is too late to apply another coat. Out of all the things we paint though, deck flooring and wood fences are about the hardest things to maintain.

Thanks paintguy. Our fence around the HVAC is in shade most of the day - so possibly 8 years sounds great.

Our other fence around the tankless water heater gets about 50% sun in the afternoon but its 2 posts each sits in open PVC sleeves in the ground & the ends touches rocks & pebbles within that sleeve.

The post ends (~12") weren't painted - so go ahead & paint them?

I'll definitely have to monitor it more often.

Yea, the ends of the posts (rough side) are the most important areas to keep sealed. Moisture enters there and helps the wood to degrade the quickest. Of course, these are the parts that are hard to access with paint because they are near the ground, but this is why we seal them if we can before installation.

Luckily, I fabricated those 2 PVC sleeves where I insert the posts in & can remove the entire fence ( really a trellis) without too much headache. This was so I can get to the the tankless water heater when servicing.
