My computer sound is gone! Can you help?

All the sound seems to be gone on my computer. We can't hear music, speaking on news videos and even the sound of the cards for solitair.

I haven't changed anything lately and the wires and buttons look OK. The settings on the volume control are all in the middle.

Come to think of it, I have rec. a couple notices lately that "My Disk is low on Memory" I don't know what that means either.

I have Windows XP and the updates are automatic.

We need to run a couple errands so I'll be back in a couple hours.

I still have Windows XP too. We lost our sound a few months ago, seems the speaker wire was pulled out of the jack in the back of the CPU. Plugged it back in, did a shut down and restart, and our sound is back!

I surprisingly ran into this same issue. I've called HP before, the first time being when i took my new Pavilion Slimline out of the box and the hard drive was not being recognised. I called and was immediately told that it was no longer under warranty. I said i had just bought it about 4 hours ago at a major retailer. I was told it didn't matter, apparently it was an older model that was on the store shelves for some time now. Four calls and three hours later my computer was working, sort of. I had a few calls in the past 9 months, usually for not booting properly or at all. I'm still waiting for recovery discs from about 9 months ago. Last night i came home and my computer was frozen. I had to reboot it. It ran the CHKDSK (again) and afterwards i was missing about 100GB of data. I called HP today. After he said his greeting i opened with "pending hard drive failure". There was no talk of recovery discs. He had me run the hardware diagnostics. Surface scan : HD535-2W. The fun lies in finding a service location in Calgary. He said they had service centres & partners EVERYWHERE. Their server was offline so we couldn't get it from their website. He gave me businesses to call. In a city of over 1000000 people you'd think there would be SOMEWHERE i could go to have the hard drive replaced. He was very helpful. I just wish their computers were too. It would save me all of these calls, from which i am taking a break. This would be the first time i got someone who really listened to me too. It's really nice when that happens.

Genes, no, I don't use hibernation or sleep or stand by. Let me run this thought through y'all. About the time the computer decided it didn't want to do internet, we had Comcast to come out to check why we got nothing but tiles. While he was here, he took note that we have five TV's and was using several splitters. He unhooked/uninstalled one of the tvs and it got rid of the tiles. Could the splitters have anything to do with this problem? What is such a riddle to me is, why does one computer work on the Ethernet and the other one will not? Hmmmmmm? I've had another AT&T technician back to the house and he found nothing and I took it back to the computer guy and they, again, found nothing. The AT&T guy did suggest hooking up a router and using that. What's the general thought on that idea?

Pictures will help, but in the meantime, a few things to consider: - Super-glue (CA glue) will strengthen failing and flaking particle board. Use the thin stuff and drip it in and let it soak into the surrounding area. - Fill loose holes with epoxy. Epoxy putty would work well for this. - Most knock-down (KD) or ready to assemble (RTA) furniture uses connectors of some sort. By sound system do you mean the sound drivers in as per viewed in control panel or a physical system of speakers and amps recognized by the computer? It could be one of many things if you have a complicated sound system. but if you only have a pair of speakers plugged in directly to the laptop we just might be able to help out. do give us details.

In the blue bar, lower right where time is displayed etc., there's a series of icons - hit the arrow if not all of the icons are displayed. Run your curser over the icons until you come to the one named "volume". Click on it - you may just have accidentally turned the volume down or off.

Take a good look at duluthinbloomz helpful entry.

This is a good example why I ask questions like this here rather than the Computer Forum. There I would have likely had someone say "check your volume control!"

She -- explained exactly where to find the volume control and how to handle it ---- That is my kind of language!

I love asking help from people who speak the same language and at the same speed! LOL

BTW -- If help didn't come here, I would have had to go to the Computer Help Forum -- but always here first!

Thanks everyone! Don't you just wonder if there will ever be a time of not needing those "Dah!" type reminders!

Here's a related story. Our church now broadcasts online, and our "not-so-tech-savvy" pastor wanted to go back and watch some of our services. He and his DW bought a new computer for Christmas and had someone come out and hook it all up. NO SOUND. The person, who works in an IT related field, tried all kinds of things and still...NO SOUND.

Turns out they didn't have the speakers plugged in. :-)

Hayjud-I had that happen to me once.Couldn't figure out what was wrong.Was having a fit about the stupid computer not working and DGD came in to see if she could "fix" it.Turned out she had turned off the volume earlier! That is now one of my pet peeves,"Do Not" turn off the volume when you use my computer! They still do it sometimes but at least now I know what to look for.LOL
