My Sled Dog Ride in Willow, AK (7 pics)

I haven't finished going through all of my Iditarod race photos but I have prepared some photos of the day I went on an 8 mile sled dog ride in a most beautiful area.

We went to the Dream a Dream kennels of 14 time Iditarod musher Vern Halter. Vern is a friendly, very approachable man with lots of smiles and love for his 70+ dogs.

We sledded in Willow, AK, just outside Wasilla. It had snowed heavily the night before leaving a bright, beautiful, sugary winter wonderland. The likes of which this Southern California gal has never seen.

This is Vern telling us (a group of 11) about how to pack and prepare to run an Iditarod.

My view as I was sitting in the sled's front basket. I sat in it for 1 mile of the 8 mile ride.

This was taken while I was standing on the back runners of the sled. I did this for 7 miles. It was a blast! I did have to ask the musher to stop so I could take the photo. :-)

Oh Jodi,

I loved the pics and look forward to seeing many more. I imagine that ride was really an exhilarating one!

It looks like you located some good boots after pondering buying them before the trip.

My brother and I built a fort, another fort, and a 2-story fort. Then, we built 3 dog houses for our dogs, a rabbit pen for our 2 rabbits, helped my grandfather remodel his home, and helped him build bee hives. So, we started enjoying building VERY early on. It wasn't something they made us do, just something we loved to do. We were both homeschooled and only had to do school study for about 4 hours a day. That left plenty of time for other activities. We played forest rangers from the time I was 7 until I was, well probably 16! We loved to listen to Old-time radio, specifically "Ranger Bill" and "The Lone Ranger". When I was 10, I started farming with my own little flower garden that my granddaddy helped me start. Then, when I was 12 and my brother was 9, we started our first vegetable garden. It was very small in comparison to my granddaddy's farm but it kept us busy. We grew 10 rows of corn, 25 tomato plants, and some pepper and okra. Since then, we have continued to grow the size of that garden to 5 acres and now we want more to farm. My parents and grandparents (who lived next door) never forced us to work with them. We just wanted to. Instead of having lots of friends our age at school, we made friends with our family. (For which I am so grateful now!) We didn't watch TV (didn't even have one in the house) didn't play on the computer (only got one of those when we started college) and spent as much of our time outdoors as possible. And yes, even after a hard days work building and gardening, my brother and I still enjoyed digging holes! I think its something that kids just like to do. We dug 7 holes that I know of, probably more! One we got 6 feet deep and were starting a tunnel before it collapsed! We had dreams of digging a hole with tunnels into the earth like a cave to be our hideout! If it sounds like a childhood from the 1940's, you're right, it was! But now at age 24 and my brother age 21, we both are best of friends when many siblings hate each other. We have strong ties to our family, work on our family farm, enjoy life and have something to work towards in life so unlike many of our peers in college! I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything in the world! Yep, there were bad times but boy did we have fun! -Rachel

Uxorial, I used an Olympus digital camera. And yes, the cold affected the camera. It fogged up the lenses inside the camera and occasionally it wouldn't operate at all but that was rare. I kept it tucked inside my jacket whenever I wasn't using it. I also noticed that none of my photos are as crisp and clear as they have been previously. One of the gals I traveled with had all kinds of problems with her little camera (can't remember which one it was). Hers shut down altogether a good deal of the time and she was going through batteries at a ridiculous rate. I gave her one of my hand warmers to wrap around the camera on a particularly cold photo op day. It really helped. I went through more batteries than usual as well but not as bad as hers. She'd take 10 pictures and her batteries were dead. I'm sure Casey who takes all the wonderful photos in cold, icy Newfoundland can shed some more light on this problem. Jodi-

We took a Princess cruise and land tour several years ago. It was wonderful. We got a room with a balcony on the top deck so we could sit out there and look at all the sights without standing on deck being cold. We went in early May and the weather was not all that bad.....in fact, no mosquitos and very little rain. It was great to wrap up in blankets and call room service for coffee. We loved staying at one of the Princess Hotels in Denali and took the bus trip. Excellent! The train ride to Denali was OK but we took the bus back to Anchorage and enjoyed it much more. Our very favorite side trip was outside Skagway on the bus tour to the Yukon. There was also a train trip but the bus ride was a great experience. We got to stop along the way if there was something interesting to see.....like a big wolf near the side of the road. The guide was really a lot of fun and knew the history of the Yukon gold rush. We also stopped for lunch at a museum/gift shop. I bought the book Alaska by James Michener there and re read it. I would suggest you read it on your trip. We opted not to have scheduled meal times and that worked out very well. We met some people who were from a tiny town here in California where my maternal grandmother was born. Small world. We took the trip to Mendenhall Glacier outside of Juneau. Take lots of pictures and keep a journal so you can share your experiences with us when you return. Have a wonderful trip!

I can't tell that I have been to the race in person- but I have 2 friends who are experienced in one way or another with the race. First person is a friend- she was my surgery partner. She is a dog lover- takes correct care of her animals. Her brother was either the boyfriend or was engaged to the winner of several years ago-4 times- Susan Butcher. My friend was up there several times, and was amazed at the absolute devotion and care that Susan gave her animals. The second friend is also a fellow nurse- she and her husband raced dogs here in Wyoming- then moved to Anchorage because she and her husband wanted to race more intensely. I knew exactly how this friend and husband took care of their dogs- they were good friends, and were did alot together with the dogs. After they moved to Alaska, they told me how dedicated almost all of the mushers are- thier dogs come first. There will always be a bad apple in any group. Do you believe that the Olympics are bad? There have been horses lost in the Olympics- the compitition is extremely strenuous, and sometimes injuries happen or a cardiac abnormalty will cause death that the very well taken care of horses had that the Team was not aware of. I do agree that maybe the Olympic course could be less strenuous. PETA is not a group that makes much sense. They don't think that ANY animal should be a pet- they don't even think that a dog or cat should be on a leash, be owned by a human- NOTHING. I guess they would rather have dogs and cats run wild, getting hit by cars, starving, reproducing at will. They are overboard. I agree with not using animals for testing if possible- especially for cosmetic makeup. Anyway- from what I have learned from both of my friends, the race is well monitored- there are mandatory rests, vet checks, and a van that follows them to take a dog out of the race if it appears too tired or ill to race. If mushers treat thier dogs badly at home, that is a reflection of the owner/musher- not the ideals of the race. Did you know that the Iditerod is the only race that having the dogs wear leather booties is mandatory? Being in the atmoshere of the race, and being able to follow the race would be great. If you are dressed right, you are warm. I just went through 2 weeks of temps down to -19 below, and was never cold, as we are dressed for it. Either place you choose to go will be a wonderful adventure- why can you go to the get-together in Italy this year and go to Alaska next year? I would not want to miss either.

The little green boxes...was that where the dogs stayed???

I would hope they could all cuddle together to stay warmer.

Everything you see me wearing (except the gloves) were given to me by Vern Halter to wear during my ride. The suit he wore in one Iditarod when Wells Fargo was his sponsor. The mukluks were huge! I could have fit two of my feet into them! And I'm glad Vern is not a tall man or I would have really swum in his suit.

It was not terribly cold at his place but one never knows what it will be like out in the area where we mushed so to play it safe, Vern made sure I was fully outfitted. He gave me mittens but I never wore them, it was just too darn hot out.

Photos 3, 4 and 7 were taken out on a lake bed where it was expected to be much colder, though it turned out not to be.

Alaskan Huskies (not a breed, just a type of dog bred for speed and endurance) are not indoor dogs. They would be miserable inside because of their metabolism. During dog races, a musher will often not race his dogs or he will stop and rest once the temps climb to 30Â° or above. The dogs will overheat.

The first picture with the dog on the dog house brought back memories of my malamutes. they *loved* the snow! They became indoor dogs in the spring and summer, but in the winter they refused to come in. Your right, their houses are more than warm enough. I'd hate to have to comb out the under coats of 70+ dogs when the weather heats up.

Great pictures! I hope that you frame the one of you in your musher outfit. Imagine your grandchildren looking at you some day and saying "That's grandma!"

I can't wait to see more photos. I also love Alaska, but have never been there in the winter.

We had an Alaskan Husky in CA, but lived in the mountains and he really did love winter and snow, but we had to watch summer. He loved to sleep right in from of a swamp cooler and his coat was so thick and fur between the toes. BUT, he was a one person dog, tolerated others and we did have to watch him around small children. He did like his space. He lived until he was almost 17 years old, had arthritis, but our vet gave him the same shot they give race horses once a month and for 3 weeks he felt great then became hurting again.We still miss him.

Kath, it is very, very difficult to find sled dog rides in the Anchorage/Wasilla area during Iditarod and Fur Rendezvous (another huge event in the same timeframe) time. Just about anyone with sled dogs is either running the race, helping someone who is running the race or a volunteer for the race.

We really lucked out. Found a small company who does custom tours. The owner, Candice, made some phone calls and finagled her way into Vern's very busy day. He's done 14 Iditarods and at 60, is retired from racing but he sponsors other racers. He helps them prepare, loans them dogs, etc. So we got to spend some time at Vern's kennels, check out a sled up close that was all packed for a gal named Nancy Yoshida who was going to race for the first time this year. Unfortunately Nancy took a hard spill on a notoriously dangerous part of the Iditarod trail called The Steps and had to scratch from the race.

So, long story short ... we had a custom tour created for us by Candice at Salmon Berry tours. She's a great gal!
