Secondhand smoke may cause cancer in pets, doctors say
Comments (8)As a longtime Vet Tech, I have to say that, yes, secondhand smoke does effect your pets. Cats more than dogs. With a stethoscope I can hear a difference in the lungs of an older cat who has lived with heavy smokers and a cat that that has never been exposed to secondhand smoke. Also feline asthma is more common in cats that live in smoking households than in non-smoking households. As far as dogs, I am sure it effects them too but not as noticeably. As far as lambasting anybody, I would never do that [I am a smoker and can hear my lungs with the same stethoscope I am listening to my cats with!] but if you do have a pet with a breathing problem it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to tell your Vet you smoke. Pete - You can smoke in the doghouse, just let your pup be somewhere else when you do it!!!! nova...See MoreSmoking around oxygen
Comments (22)My mother actually helped bring her life to an end earlier than it would have by lighting a match while she had her oxygen tube in her nose. She had asthma, emphysema (sp?) and had been diagnosed with mesotheleoma (sp) once she was in the hospital for burning her face. She had been in the hospital, they released her with the oxygen but she was so incoherent that when we got to their apartment in the Assisted Living Facility, I hunted down all the matches, lighters, and cigarettes I could find and removed them from their place. that night, she went wandering around the building and found some matches. The enxt morning she lit one (didn't have a cigarette) and burnt her nose and lip area. She knocked the tbe out of her nose and it was on fire. My Dad who was in a wheel chair, grabbed a glass of water that was by his chair and dowsed it out. My Mom was nearing the end of her life as it was but it brought things to closure soon than we expected....See MoreFor those with pets what do you do with the water bowl?...
Comments (30)we live in a split level and we have the dog's bowl at the bottom of the steps on lower level with a pet mat underneath b/c she is such a messy eater and drinker. the cat gets fed on top of W/D b/c dog will eat his food ASAP... so no food bowls in my kitchen. i was always knocking the water bowl pre-reno and did want to deal with it in new kitchen. so sorry for everyone's loss. it is just heartbreaking to lose your pet. we lost two dogs some years ago and we still miss them and talk about them. our dog now is going on 13 and really slowing down... thinking of rescuing another soon. i would just hate to something to happen to her and then have no dog at all.....our cat is going on 11 but still acts like a kitten, so hopefully he has alot more years in him. he is indoors only, so i think that really helps further his life. he was a rescue. we found him at 6 mos of age on the jetties in cape may, nj. brought him home and have had him every since. he's is just awesome, more like a dog than a cat. always the first to greet you at the door, we all just love him so much. we always wondered what made someone dump him, but their loss was our gain. here's a pic of Tori, just taken this morning and Jetty, taken 4 yrs ago, he looks the same!!...See MoreDo you unplug your tree when you leave the house if you have pets?
Comments (26)Over 50 years ago, my parents had a cat. Every Christmas, we would find Mehitabel (yes, named for the famous cat in the book, Archie and Mehitabel) sitting on a sturdy branch, right up against the trunk of the tree, staring at us like the Cheshire cat. Now this was a tree with that old-fashioned tinsel put on it, lovingly one or two pieces at a time (it took forever!), and not one strand was out of place. We never saw Mehitabel get up in the tree, nor did we ever witness her descent. She looked quite lovely with her eyes "glowing" from the tree lights! She was quite a character. None of our cats ever got up IN the tree, but they did knock it over during the night one time (nasty old-style Christmas tree stand). We tied it to something from then on and never again heard that unmistakable sound in the middle of the night....See Morequirkyquercus
