Oxygen is not explosive. It is an accelerant.
The smoking is more dangerous.

I have an Aunt who has been smoking with her oxygen for well over 30 years. We kept telling her not to do it but she would never stop. She is still with us today and has outlived just about all her relatives. She is in her 80's.

Might not be dangerous, but it's stupid.

If the management cannot/refuses to talk/or not to the person, you might go to the local fire department and talk to them. Because it is a senior area, this could be a violation because it puts others in danger in case of an explosion. They also might have some ways to protect you etc.

THERE IS NO EXPLOSIVE HAZARD WITH OXYGEN. If there was, they would not allow us to carry portable tanks out in the public.

Oxygen is an accelarant, which means it can make a fire burn hotter. In a worst case scenario, if one were stupid enough to smoke while using the oxygen it could cause the ember on the end of the cigarette to flare up and cause local burns to the individual, but under no circumstances is there and explosive hazard. In fact, in the book for the portable oxygen tanks it says it is safe to use if you stay 4ft away from ppl while they are smoking.

You say the oxygen is disconnected. So it should not be dangerous. Just goes to show the powerful addictive properties of nicotine. Can't breathe, but can smoke. See it all the time.

But you cannot take it on planes, or even check it as baggage. Why? Because the airlines claim of the explosive matter.

No it doesnt explode but can do damage...We had a few in dialysis,didnt take it serious .Onecame in hair burnt,eyebrows gone ,throat was burnt more of a flashback no explosian although I guess if you sat tank near like a heat source it could.

A tenant at my job started a large fire in his apartment by lighting a cigarette too close to his oxygen, so yes there can be a danger. If you google it you can find lots of information on it.

My SIL has COPD and goes outside, disconnects her oxygen, and smokes. Yes smoking is addictive, but I like to think living is too!

The claim that you cannot take an oxygen bottle on an aircraft is totally BS.

They will require you to have a written copy of your doctors prescription for the 02 bottle, but in some states that is a state law anyway.

All commercial aircraft have emergency oxygen masks that drop down from the overhead automatically in the event that they loose cabin pressure. In addition, they have dozens of small walk around oxygen bottles that are used by the crew to allow them mobility during an emergency.

On some airlines they will require you to check your O2 bottle as luggage, but they will give you a walkaround bottle to use in the terminal before boarding and while on the aircraft. On some aircraft the stewardess can open the overhead panel and connect your canula to the aircrafts oxygen supply while in flight but one thing you can rest assured of, the airline is not going to let you ride without oxygen if you need it.

Oxygen can saturate the surroundings, making it burn better/faster than if there was no oxygen from a tank in the area. So if you are on a sofa, for example, using oxygen, and oxygen from the tank is seeping into the sofa and you drop a cigarette onto the sofa, it's liable to burst into flames faster than normal, because it's being fed by the oxygen. That is why there are all the warnings about not smoking around oxygen tanks. I imagine a cloud of oxygen around a lighter would make the lighter burn hotter and brighter and faster and bigger, too, so you could get burned lighting up.

You indeed can carry oxygen on a plane, I have several clients that do it all the time.

My mother actually helped bring her life to an end earlier than it would have by lighting a match while she had her oxygen tube in her nose. She had asthma, emphysema (sp?) and had been diagnosed with mesotheleoma (sp) once she was in the hospital for burning her face. She had been in the hospital, they released her with the oxygen but she was so incoherent that when we got to their apartment in the Assisted Living Facility, I hunted down all the matches, lighters, and cigarettes I could find and removed them from their place. that night, she went wandering around the building and found some matches. The enxt morning she lit one (didn't have a cigarette) and burnt her nose and lip area. She knocked the tbe out of her nose and it was on fire. My Dad who was in a wheel chair, grabbed a glass of water that was by his chair and dowsed it out. My Mom was nearing the end of her life as it was but it brought things to closure soon than we expected.

Sad, sad, sad. That is all I can say.

When I see young kids smoking - thinking they are looking so cool - I wish they could see themselves with an O2 tube stuck up their nose, so desperate for a smoke.

It's a horrible addiction for sure.

I lived with my parents smoking all my life and there many nights that I laid in my bed listening to my mother cough and cough. When she would stop coughing, I would be even more worried that she has choked or passed out as I had seen that happen a number of times. I can remember getting out of bed and going to their bedroom door and asking her if she was okay.

My DIL parents both smoked and when she got pregnant, she told them she would not bring the baby to their house if they continued to smoke there. She is a very determined woman and she meant what she said. By the time Asher was born, both of her parents had quit. Her dad did Chantix but her mom quit by herself. Lucky for us, neither my DH or myself have ever smoked. Living with my parents was enough for me to know that was a habit that would never happen to me.

I did Chantix as well. Almost have a year under my belt. There are still times I automatically think that I'll go have a cigarette and then I come to and remind myself that no you won't!! It's such a habit and I smoked for lots of years.

So so so glad I was not smoking when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Although like I told my Dr., if there was ever a reason to want to start again, that day would of been it. I have kidded him about what a moronic thing that would be!!!

deamn, I so totally agree with you. Quitting was the toughest thing I've done and a diagnosis like breast cancer could very easily send me back over the edge. That and the weight gain......grrrrr.......

juellie1962, I am almost 2 months post op...was at the Dr. 2 weeks ago, he said I am healing nicely. Do not have to go back to see him til Nov. Still have not seen the oncologist. Saw OB-GYN Dr. last week(you know..that yearly thing..lol)and she's thinking that neither surgeon nor oncologist consider me a high priority at this time. I'll take that!! LOL!!
