What would you call this light?

Moorish? Spanish revival? The shape is kind of 20s chinoiserie, too. It must date from the 20s or early 30s. Personally I'd prefer a plain old pan chandelier or a batwing if I wanted something period, but a friend is very taken with this, and it did just come out of a cottage in the neighborhood where she's looking to buy.

But the more I look at it, the less I know what it is, other than pre-Deco/post-Nouveau.

I now recant my statement about machine carving. Asymmetry is a good indication that it was hand carved. Perfect symmetry means machine made. Also, the roughness around the leaves indicate hand work. The wood used for the front of the case may be different from the wood used on the side. Or not. A picture of the screw would be good to determine if the core or thread is tapered or the core is tapered and the thread is not. Are both screws an exact match? Is the screwdriver slot in the middle on each of the heads? All these things would be readly apparent if one were to see the object in person, but are difficult to discern from parceled out photographs. So far, I believe Casey's appraisal is holding up. Still a very nice piece of furniture.

Thanks....I was definitely having mixed feelings about them but gr8day defined it best for me....... 'old world'! :~) I could make the BR fit the style, but it wouldn't have anything to do with the rest of my home. Because of that, I think I'll pass on them, but they will be a steal for someone!

guys, LOL! my vote goes to roselovr's crayola red! I think crayola red is darn close... Dublinbay, lol! that's no cherry red, hee-hee... I always think of cherries as that fresh cherry natural fruit color....unless of course you wanna call it maraschino! or how about "cinnamon red-hot" (like the ones gradeschool kids eat)....I know, I know I'm being silly, somebody slap me, heheh, but that red is like super bright on my monitor....

Looks like it belongs in a silent film star's house. It really has that old Hollywood glamor Spanish thing going. Totally '20s LA. Sunset Boulevard!

Thanks, fori. It must have been a big stretch financially for anyone owning the house it came from--would love to know where they found it. I've looked through some old GE lighting catalogs and it isn't there.

Ah well. I saw a listing for a table on ebay that settled for describing it as Hispano-Moorish and I guess that's what this would be, too. Would be fun if we could track down a couple of sconces to coordinate.

Thanks, Annie. That's a handy resource to have, although I was thinking more of something from the same period. But if nothing shows up, there were a couple there that might work, since they wouldn't be in the same room with the chandelier.

For some reason having some vintage lighting (even if not original to the house) really cranks up the resale value on these, especially to the people who will immediately put in can or track lighting. I guess it's a humbler version of the mentaility that creates things like a Henrybuilt kitchen with a Glenwood range languishing in it.
