High speed costs a lot, but everyone can get it

HughesNet offers high speed internet everywhere. First, you want to look outside to make sure you are able to see the southern skies. There has to be a clear view to the south. This can be tricky if there are trees but doesn't mean setup is impossible. When the installer arrives, he'll determine for you and your card won't be charged until/unless connection is complete.

Look here for their package offers.

Option 1 is the $300 upfront for equipment and then the monthly package fee.

Option 2 is no $300 upfront but is an added $20 a month to pay for the equipment over a two-year period. This is subject to credit approval, but it works out to be $80 more in the end.

Whatever package you choose, you get a $100 mail-in rebate. Their rates are based on internet only with 2gig storage for emails but no webpage and no web storage. I really think it's awfully expensive compared to rates around here (about twice as much and no upfront costs), but at least you finally get high speed internet.

Received this email a few minutes ago........

I saw your post and just wanted to say I had Wild Blue for about 12 days b4
cancelling it (No you are not allowed to cancel and are liable for the contract
period).

I took the !@#$ thing down, packed it in the original boxes, disputed the charge
on my credit card, returned the crap, with proof of delivery, presented that to
my crcd, and in time it was taken off my card. I also canceled my crcd b4 they
could bill me for the remaining 10 months on the contract. I had paid one month
up front, and one month was free.

They badgered me for months, and I am afraid to pull my credit report and see
what 'might' be on it. My credit was near perfect b4...98.5% out of 100.

I imagine if I searched I could find a rant thread or two of mine about them.
I waited on hold several times for over an hour with no one answering repair
service, b4 I hung up. They told me it would be 10 days to get a repairman out
here to repair my 10 day old equipment that was under warranty. They just do
not have the manpower to maintain things in my area, and not enough techs to man
the phones. They were the worst nightmare I have ever had with a company.

Just thought you should know.

Just food for thought. Like I said...Wild Blue was a real nightmare and Hughes
sound a good deal like more of the same.

Beware of agreeing to pay for crappy service for 12-24 months.

I have Hughes net and its too expensive, and its NOT fast. But its all we can get thats faster then dial-up. I wish we had somthing else around here.

We have DSL and I HATE IT! Half the time it isn't working right, takes forever to load, fails to respond, etc etc etc. We have had the AT&T serviceman out here multiple times and when he leaves, it works fine--for a week or so, then it's back to its old tricks and we have to call again. And everytime it storms, it goes out. When our contract is up, we are thinking about getting a Galaxy tablet computer that we can take anywhere, and also acts as a wifi hotspot so you can still get internet on your PC. Both of my brother and sister-in-laws each have one and they love it. We'll get rid of our land line phone and DSL line, we don't really need a land line anyway as we both have cell phones and nobody calls on it anyway except political calls and sales calls. The more I think about it the better I like the idea. PC's are on their way out anyway, before we know it they will be as obsolete as 8-track tape players, lol!

Calling Elux Oven/Speed Oven owners... how high?

I just measured our Elux speed oven. The bottom of the speedoven is 4 feet 2 inches from our kitchen floor (IE 50 inches).When I measure from the floor to the inside of the opened door it is about 55 inches. This is about perfect for us, but we are "Semi tall", I was 5ft10inches when I was "In my prime" (about a month ago as I recall), now I'm bout 5ft8 and so is wife. I would say if you are not quite so tall you might want to lower it so the bottom of the oven (from the floor) is 4 feet , or slightly less, if you or your wife did not "Drink your milk", when you were kids, (LOL). As the speed oven is our most used appliance, we really like the present location, next to the fridge, and away from the regular oven and cooktop, so we don't have to "Dodge" each other if one is using the oven or cooktop and the other, the speed oven. We also like the fact that our regular oven is elevated about 6 inches off the floor, alto with the fully gliding out racks and the huge window in the Icon oven, one stoops less that with an oven whose racks do not glide out and/or has a smaller window. Even so, I tend to use the higher racks in the regular oven the most. HTH's Gary

Just wanted to say thanks for the responses. Sandy, I don't really know how fast my speed is... since I've only ever had dial up, I don't have anything to compare it to. I can watch videos now, which is something I couldn't do before. Downloads still take some time but about 1/4 the amount of time they used to take... I'm pretty happy! Now I don't have to load 6 tabs and read one while the others are loading!

about the white fence service, now it will list many but beside them you have to look and see if it indeed says that one is available, for me it was right on, it did list ones that are not but it did say in the list not available over to the side. Mark, just be wary of a 2 year commitment on a service you have not yet tried, I would ask for a trial period prior to signing that kind of contract and find out the terms if it is broken. I would also do some online searches for info on them and see how well they are liked or disliked. I know BBR forum has forums for many various ISP's you could check there to see if there is one for them. http://www.dslreports.com/ Also if you will be using just a modem you would do good to go ahead and get a router to put with that modem so you have a good hardware firewall between you and the modem and the internet. I just won't go with a modem alone these days. and with just a simple google search I found this forum which pretty much says it all LOL BridgeMaxx Sucks here are a couple more blogs and several replies, it appears it is all about location with them and just how close you are to one of their towers and what could be blocking you from the tower. Also have read it is a night mare to get out of the contract so heed that warning. Internet via BridgeMaxx BridgeMaxx Update do some googling it is your fiend in these situations.

I just switched our business to AT&T Internet Lite (light?) It's $50
a month cheaper and not at all slow. I do notice if a thread has photos it's a little slower to load the pics.

HughesNet is the only service we can get, we live in the country and cable doesn't run out here, checked with AT&T and they don't offer high speed service in our area. HughesNet wanted $399. to hook us up, then $60.00 per month. In my opinion, it is rediculous to pay that much money per month to get on the internet. I don't work, so I can wait for my dial up service to grunt, groan and gag trying to get me where I want to go.

One of my sisters is on HughesNet in Louisiana, she says it's not much faster than dialup for her.

Centurytel is really expanding DSL where I live. I'm actually paying less right now for DSL than I was for dial-up and Callwave. It'll go up $5.00 a month after a year and then it'll be about the same as I was paying anyhow.

Hang in there! I'm glad I waited for the high speed DSL.

I am on Dial-Up.

Satellite would be my only option if I wanted to upgrade. It wouldn't be much of an upgrade for what the $$ is.

I am staying with dialup for now - hopefully in the future there will be a better option.

Satellite providers make it sound great - but it isn't a whole lot better than my good dialup connection - at least not $40 more a month better, LOL!
