Painted kitchen cabinets=funky texture. HELP!

Hi, all. Resident lurker, first time poster! :)

Short story: we installed tall beadboard, including backsplash, in the kitchen. We also painted our builder grade oak (?) cabinets white (Valspar Snowcap White, semi gloss, with primer). As with all trim and other cabinets we've done, we sanded the original gloss down, cleaned thoroughly, primed with Kilz "stinky" stain cover primer, then used quality angled brushes and the small sponge rollers (Lowes...can't remember the brand) for cabinets. But, I can't get over the sticky texture of the paint! It doesn't look (or feel) smooth at all. I also read that we can't sand down semi gloss for a solid month lest we want an even worse texture. I don't know what to do...or what we did wrong. It just seems lumpy and even though my husband says no one will notice...YES, I will. That's all that matters.

Related: on some areas there appears to be a yellowing effect, as well. Now I know I'm a painter/DIY newbie, but this has me stumped.

Any and all advice/tips are welcome.

PinkBee, I sell paint in my job, but I'm relatively new to DIY painting, too. Last summer I rolled high gloss latex paint on my bathroom cabinets and the texture was horrible! This summer I've been using Ace Cabinet & Trim paint on my kitchen cabinets. It's a latex/alkyd hybrid, and it levels beautifully! Paint that levels well smooths out the roller/brush marks as it dries (some painters use paint extenders to help with leveling, too, but I'd rather avoid that step). I also learned to use a brush to avoid the orange-peel effect from rollers (there are light brush marks on the frames since leveling is tougher on vertical surfaces, but they have much more character then roller marks). I intend to get around to repainting the bathroom cabinets with the Ace Cabinet & Trim paint, but to save my sanity for now, I gave it a month or two to cure and then sanded down the worst of the texture. As for the yellowing...unless it's an oil paint or you picked a creamy shade of white, I'm stumped. Perhaps the oil primer is contributing to this? Faron? Painterguy? Christophern? Funcolors?

Thanks so much for the tips...although now I'm filled with regret for not knowing this prior to doing my ENTIRE kitchen. haha.

I'll wait to sand and try those brushes and possibly the paint. Do they do color matching?

Yellowing: the only thing I can think it could be would be the primer somehow coming through...but how? I'm seeing it mostly around the stove so perhaps it's smoke (although I don't think I've burned anything). It looks kind of streaky, though...like paint strokes.

Yes, there is a special type of roller - a split foam roller which is supposed to roll around the texture and paint all sides of it. I got a low-quality one at Fred Meyer; I later saw a better one by Wooster for cheaper at either Home Depot or Lowes. I can't find it on their websites (typical) but I know I saw it in the store. I used a high-quality 3/4" nap wool roller for my last coat. I liked this better than the foam and wished I'd used it all the way through. However, I was doing acoustic tile; your mileage may vary on a popcorn ceiling. See my other post on this subject here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/paint/msg0210400021419.html?4. Unfortunately, you do not really have an easy task on your hands there. I've done this numerous times since I renovate old houses. Without seeing exactly how deep the grooves are, there a possibly 3 options: 1-install smallish sheetrock over the ceiling plaster (3/8"). I don't like to do this b/c it is usually hard to hang as you have to make sure you get a stud and not screw into plaster or lathing. And, sometimes it is not really level. To save on removing plaster, I just had an idea but have never done. You could run 1x4 wood furr strips across the ceiling, then run sheetrock. 2-You can do the same for the walls, but then the reveal around the doors and windows is messed up and does not look good. Can work if you have really thick trim and use thin sheetrock. But, sometimes this is wavy. 3-Remove the plaster and sheetrock. Best approach. Then you can open a bit of a can of worms: studs that need to be replaced, need furr strips, maybe new wiring... Will look great when done, though. 4-You can apply a wide fiberglass mesh to the entire wall and mud it in. Use hot mud on the first coat---very important! They come 3-4 ft wide. It is kind of expensive, but less than demo. However, if the grooves are too thick then this may not work since the finishers would have to apply way too much mud to fill it in. Julie

Yes, with neutrals you truly could change out your fabrics by season. Thanks for reminding me Annie. I do admit I'm not feeling the strong colors either. I just posted some additional photos to the kitchen link taken in morning light with what I put together. It appears I like the softer, slightly color tones also, centering on some green or blue green. Thank you for your comment on just that point. My DH is fine with anything I choose, as long as he gets back into the kitchen soon. He's the main cook and missing it.

jess1979-sorry I missed your comment earlier. The perimeter is Leathered AB and the island is Alaska White. Thank you. I am getting used to it being my kitchen. I kind of stood in amazement when it was all finished. Spoiled girl here. spartans-ohhh, that is so awesome. That herringbone is just sucking me right in! Thank you for posting a pic. It looks great - and I love the range and sink together like that. I toyed around with it for my own but couldn't figure it out. Anyhow - very very nice! What kind of herringbone is that? romy-truth be told I actually fell in love with your crackle and saw this herringbone when I went in to see the sample board of the encore. I like a little something and that is what I think the crackle does - not plain but it doesn't shout at you either. Yummy! Thank you for your kind words on my family room - I had help (A LOT of help). ;) mayflowers-textured or fabric look totally good with - animal print - gah, no. :D I will see if someone will photoshop it for me. I am handy with the computer but no so much with that sort of thing. It is an equally gray day again today so I am not sure when I can get a pic with some decent natural lighting in here! I think you hit the nail on the head - that is the only thing I am really hesitant about - does it compete with the island. Hmmm. I kind of feel like the island is a piece all it's own but it IS right there so I need to consider it. I don't want something totally plain or that matches the trim and cabinets. That would bug me - feel like the tile just runs right into all the white. BUT, I know I need to be subtle and subtle I do like...hence the slight matte texture. I am the least trendiest person I know, or should I say I am always light years behind what's hip and happening but I like what I like and don't really check to see if it's "in" first. For some reason herringbone strikes me as kind of classic but not necessarily a period look like maybe hex or penny round? edit: And I seem to be struggling between white being too white and off white being to cream - warm v. cool. I need something pretty neutral. True gray is too cool. The island counter to me is more warm but not beige or cream, sigh. Thanks everyone for your thoughts. PinkBee, what paint are you using on your cabinets? I am painting trim.. and my first attempt was to use Benjamin Moore, White dove in an oil base, and found it to messy to clean, so I switched to their "Advanced", with is a water base - enamel finish. It is suppose to be great at leveling, leveling. It is - fantastic... looks like an oil base, but after a few weeks I decided I didn't care to the color of white dove - too much yellow, and I was looking more for a neutral off white. This forum raves about the color White Dove.. but to me, it was way to yellow! My search for the perfect white paint went on.. I tried 5, and just couldn't find the perfect one!

I bought a subway tile, in the perfect off white color and tried to pick a paint from that... it brought me back to WHITE DOVE! ???? Than it finally dawned on me... the white dove paint I was using YELLOWED (within 3 weeks!) It was a completely different color from what I started out with. I switched to the Aura line, which will be non-yellowing. It goes on nice, but the advance went on smoother... but I'll take the light brush strokes in exchange of all my paint yellowing!

you have to spray the cabinets for a pro finish sorry to say, you will always see applicator marks in the paint no matter how much they say the paint levels. You might get away with doing vanities with brushes and foam rollers but not kitchen cabinets up high with a satin paint in the light of a kitchen. I do this This for a living and I would never get paid for anything less than work that could pass for a factory finish.
