Extra wide shoes for toddlers?

My son's feet are so wide and chubby we always need to buy extra wide. We normally go to Stride Rite and I'm hoping to find a less expensive alternative! I'm beginning to think it's a conspiracy. LOL Just wondering if anyone else has any luck with this.

I used to get my daughter's Stride Rites on EBay. A lot of people sell new ones cheaper than the store, but you have to make sure the shipping is reasonable.

We have an outlet mall up the road a bit that has a striderite outlet. While all outlet prices are not always low, I did find a difference between the outlet Striderite and the regular Mall Striderite.

I work with toddlers with Down Syndrome and have for years...here are some suggestions for a toddler around 18 months old... they are learning cause vs effect...that they can make things happen by their actions, so a toy that has buttons that you push and it lights up or plays music... a ball that is brightly colored and about the same size as say a soccer ball...these are at Target or Walmart.. a board book that has REAL pictures with one picture per page...like a FIRST WORDS book... a very easy shape sorter (with a circle, square, triangle...nothing more) a little set of noise makers/musical instruments...drum, maracas, bell, etc. a set of large blocks (Hobby Lobby has had a great set that are foam blocks)...those are great as they begin to learn to stack a riding toy that they can sit in and push along with their feet. Most children who are 18 months with Down's Syndrome are sitting up independently and are working toward walking...so a push walker could be a good toy provided it has a wide base. A narrow push walker would not be a good choice because they tend to lean forward on the handle and it slips out from under them... Kids with Down's Syndrome are such a delight! Have fun! Have you tried offering a reward for staying in her bed all night? As far as transitioning to the new bed, let her help pick out her new bedding so she has some involvement. You might pick out a couple of options in advance and let her choose from those other she might go off on a whole new theme. Brag up how she is such a big girl to get the new bed. Have you friends and neighbors brag her up too. My kids liked to turn the light on too. I fixed the problem by getting (I don't know what this is called) a thing I could screw into the light socket. It sort of looks like a light socket. You can buy them at Wal-Mart back by the light switch covers. Anyway, it had a pull chain on it (some come with an extra outlet). I would just turn the light off at the bulb every night so flipping the switch didnt work. I put a night light in the extra outlet so the kids can't reach it. I would move the furniture away from the light switch so she doesn't have a reason to be climbing. Since your dd seems to enjoy her time in isolation, I would probably leave the door open. Give her a consequence for every time she wanders out. You may have to take away a toy or some other action. Don't sit and talk to her. Make a simple statement and return her to bed. After the first time, just use a gesture and no words. Don't let her have the attention she's wanting. If she knows you mean business, she'll quit. Good luck! She will get over this.

I have a wrought iron staircase and hired a contractor to custom-make me a wrought iron gate at the bottom of my staircase. It's been highly effective with 3 boys and even stops my dogs from visiting our house guests in the middle of the night (guest room is upstairs). The gate is so pretty and I am surprised at how many compliments i get on it; it doesn't look like a baby gate at all. Well worth every penny and I'll leave it on even when my boys are grown.

I always say I have duck feet. They are as wide as they are long. I have a pair of shoes and I don't remember where I got them. I had them a long time before I wore them. I know I didn't buy them new...yard sale or thrift or maybe someone gave them to me. Once I started wearing them, they are the most comfortable shoes I have ever had. They are canvas, like sneakers but don't lace up. But they do have some crisp cross laces on them...for looks, I guess. I have literally worn holes in the top side. The bottoms are good...haven't come loose like cheap sneakers. They are Easy Spirit. I have bought 2 pairs since, but haven't found any exactly like them. They are comfortable but not as much as my first pair. They look like heck but I am going to take them to the store and see if they have some more similar.

Payless Shoe Stores here in Texas sell the extra wide shoes for Toddlers. They aren't as good as stride rite, but for everyday knock arounds, we found them satisfactory.

We use Payless too. Also, when my kids were younger I found some plain white tennis shoes with the vel-cro in wide width at WalMart and loved them. I liked them so much that I bought two pairs (I had two kids) in every size they had. We had shoes for several years! When you find those wide widths at good prices, you gotta stock up.

Get skater shoes!!!!!!!! I have an 18 month old who has had the hugest and widest feet ever since he was born. Even in the womb all I could ever feel is his heels! LOL You go to the shoe store and all they want you to get is stride rite because they do come in wide but a girl working there said to get skater shoes for him because they naturally run wide and ever since then that is all we get. "Etnies" is a one brand that works well for us but the "Nike Free" has been the best and they are so light weight. We got him a whole size bigger than what he needed because he grows so fast and they have been great. Target also carries skater shoes that you can pick up for $12.00. I hope this helps!!

Skater shoes and shoes that in general just look like they're made wide. New Balance is the only athletic shoe that I have found that come in wide and extra wide sizes for kids. I have found great success with Zappos.com and newbalanceexpress.com. It can be hard to find the wide and extra wide sizes in the stores. The shipping is free and they were helpful to me in the customer service department. Good luck.

My 2 year old has quite the chubby feet too. We had to get the skater shoes "Vans" at Kohls for about $15-20.

I have a 3 and 5 year old and they have EXTRA Wide feet. They can't wear Payless, New Balanc or Nike's. We have tried with several blisters. We are stuck with Stride Rite XW and my 5 year old is wanting something cuter. Stride Rite only offers a few styles and they are dull. Any suggestions? Anyone tried the Land's End wides?

Bringing this back to the top to see if there are any additional suggestions. Our granddaughter has inherited this side of the families wide feet. So far we have used Stride Rite but there shoes are so gender stereo-typed. Almost all of their girl styles are pink - not a favorite color for us or her parents or me.

We'd prefer to get her something more neutral but not as boyish as their boy styles.

I'll check out New Balance too.
