Allergy Appointment

My 3 yo has his first allergy appointment this coming Friday. They called and said not to give him vitamins or antihistamines for a week, why is this? Thanks, Paul

Why is he going for an "allergy appointment"?
The reasons for mo antihistamines is because that inhibits the body's response to allergins....but don't know wh7y no vitamins.

Probably "no vitamins" because he could be allergic to something in the vitamin pill - frequently a binder used to hold the pill together.

I have an entirely different idea - your symptoms sound exactly like those you get if you have sleep apnea. It is something more people get when they're older, but even young children can have it. It is associated with extra weight, but unless you are heavy, there are also anatomical reasons for it (like a slightly lower palate, tonsil problems, and others), and you need to be seen by an ear, nose and throat specialist (your family doctor could set that up), plus have a sleep study (where you have a couple of small wires taped to your chest and wear a small plastic clip on your finger (painless) for one night to test for the condition. It can be very serious IF it's not treated - the headaches are due to high blood pressure (if you have apnea) and the tiredness is because you are not sleeping well at all - you actually end up holding your breath (in your sleep) for a few-many seconds at a time, many times a night, and the gasps you take each time afterward can really tire you out. Please, please show this note to your mother and ask her to look into it - it really needs to be taken care of (also painless!) if you have it. I know - I do (and lots of other people too).

Sudden Allergy to--Shrimp?!

Shellfish allergies are no joke. This is the one allergen that is " Adult onset". I grew up on the ocean; and have eaten lots of shrimp. In 2005 I had my first reaction to shellfish. After 2 bites, my throat started to close up. Last night 2018 was my last exposure; and it was more severe. It was cross contamination. I had a steak where a lot of shrimp was on the menu. My steak was cooked where shrimp was cooked. I was in the ER within an hour of exposure via 911 ambulance. Vomiting, sweating out of every pore and blacked out twice. Once hitting a wall so hard everything fell off and broke on the opposite side. The EMTs kept asking me if I have been drinking.... None of my family told them I just ate at a local restaurant and had a severe shellfish allergy. I could not communicate this as I was in and out of consciousness. I am now going to an allergist, getting a medical alert bracelet and an epipen. I guess my family was too freaked to communicate what was going on.

A very late comment here but... I'm back at my yard/garden and I have more weeds than I can possibly appreciate. Anyone feel a need for some? I'll surely share. The only one on the list that I can't find so far is purselane. I'm sure there is some here. I just have not started working in the right area yet.

They probably only make one, but this is the bag my vet started Savannah on. Apparently, it's also available on Chewy. Purina Pro Allergy at Chewy In our case, since we are really trying to determine whether S has food allergies, my vet stressed that S can't have ANYTHING else -no table scraps, no treats, etc. She normally gets a pill every morning, which I bury in a Pill Pocket. I didn't think about that during the visit, but emailed my vet the next day, asking if it was okay to just coat the pill in the smallest amount of Pill Pocket, but she told me to put the pill in cream cheese instead. I can only guess that cream cheese is a more pure substance than a Pill Pocket. Poor Vanny is completely befuddled as to why she suddenly isn't getting the salmon skin, etc. after dinner! I think the key word is "hydrolyzed" which you can see in Purina Pro's product name. If I remember correctly, my vet said I could use treats with that in the name, but I think for now anyway, we will just continue to forego treats.

He will probably be given a "scratch test." They have him lie on his stomach without his shirt. With a needle, they make 30 or so scratches in rows on his back and put a little potentially allergy substance in each scratch. Then they watch it for 20 minutes or so and see which scratches react to the substance. They cannot touch or scratch these itchy scratches. It is awful. I did it with a 5 or 6 year old. Our pediatrician had said to go to an allergist only when life is awful and we cannot go on the same. He was not sleeping because he was sneezing and coughing so much. And I have to warn you that you get false positives and false negatives too. Then from those results, they know what to have you avoid and they develop shots. They want to see what he will react to. I have to say that the allergist had more effective medicines he prescribed than did the pediatrician.
