Kitchenaid Mixer Food Grinder Attachment

Wondering if anyone has this attachment and does it work pretty much as described? I would like to grind beef and turkey for ground meat recipes such as meat loaf and hamburgers. What else do you grind up? I saw a segment on Martha Stewart where they ground up already cooked meat to make a spread type thing. One mixer jammed up and they quickly moved on to the finished product.

Once again the search function isn't cooperating with me.

I have the KA grinder attachment and it does work well. I've made several types of sausage (pork, venison as well as beef). For more tender proteins like chicken and seafood, I still use my food processor to chop it.

I say go for it

I use mine to make my own pork sausage too! Works great! And I have ground beef a few times when I found a good sale on large cuts - that doesn't seem to happen any more around here lately.

Some atachments are very pricy and if you use the strainer atachment, its use is usually limited to just tomatoes. Seeds of smaller berries are going to jam or go through the holes. The strainer as no optional sieves. My old Oster Kitchen center as more stuff for cutting and slicing that I used all the time, especailly the slicers, and grater disks, not to mention a food processer. The KA seems to have wire wisk beaters which tend to make you use a spatula to clean off the sides of the bowl all the time. The Oster has an offest beater and goes against the bottom and sides while also rotating the varios bowls. then there is a blender atttachment as well as an ice crusher, and ice crem maker that uses the traditional rock salt and ice. Its no longer made, but if you find a used one, grab it, try it out, and I am sure it will become a necessary device for many food prepping issues. If they were to atart making them again, they would probably outsel any other multifunctioanl product, proved it was advertised well. Now Oster/Sunbeam are Jarden owned, who also make Food Saver, and many other products, as well as all Ball canning supplies..

Mine is also the 4-1/2 qt tilt-back head, in cobalt blue and I can't remember exactly how long I've had it, but several years anyway. Got it for a great price at Tuesday Morning. What I want to add is don't be fooled by the quart thing into thinking you can't mix large quantities unless you buy the mega model. I bake routinely and I have a super cookie cookbook put out by an Amish community. As you can imagine, they don't bother with the batches that make 4 dozen. Those recipes are written in quantities that make 11 to 12 dozen cookies at a crack. Often I will reduce that, but the first time I tried a recipe as written I looked at the bowl and thought this probably will not work. It's appearance is deceiving, because I got it all mixed without a problem. My friend however, felt she needed the 6 quart with lifter, and although she likes it, it was too tall to live on her counter under the upper cabinets so its home is on a shelf in the garage off the kitchen door. I'm sure because of that, it doesn't get used nearly as often as she had imagined. Whatever you get, you will most likely be thrilled with, because the KA truly works very well.

several years ago, sister had a little "found money" and bought a bunch of attachments for her KA stand mixer. on a trip up from VA to visit, she gifted me ones she didn't use... she kept the pasta roller/maker thing and uses that a lot. there was some sort of juicer that i thin might have been missing a part or 2. a pasta extruder that i could not get to work. and the meat grinder attachment. if i used it a lot, would want one made of metal instead of mostly plastic. one of the things i make is homemade REAL bacon bits. supermarket sells the odds & ends of the pricey slab bacon CHEAP. it's usually not very pretty but always tasty. i grind the raw bacon... sometimes semi-freeze ahead of time. then slowly render till done. it lasts forever in fridge and dirt cheap compared to the mystery bit or even real bacon bits. when i make a meatloaf, i like bacon on top. a layer of the ground bacon on top works really well. i often see the old-school, hand-crank grinders at thrift stores or yard sale for WAY less than $20.

We have had one for many,many years. We use it to grind different mixtures of meats for sausage. Wayne also grinds the meat for hamburgers and meatloaves. Works great! NancyLouise

I have one also, and it works great on both raw and cooked meat, although I use the fine grind for raw meat and the coarse for cooked meat. It's great for when I make turkey or ham salad. It will also grind pickled vegetables fairly well for adding to said salad, although I usually prefer to chop those by hand. It does not work well on raw celery, and is absolutely terrible for grinding nuts - don't do it! I have a hand-cranked nut grinder for nuts, and I'm happy with that. The KA grinder is also not good for bread crumbs. But for meats, it is excellent, and it is worth it to get it for that.

My favorite KA attachment is the grater, and it stays on the mixer most of the time. Besides cheese, I use it for grating hard vegetables, such as carrots, daikons, and onions, when I am adding them to soup. I do NOT like chunks of carrot in soup, but I add the carrot to give a bit of sweetness, and I want it to practically dissolve into the soup.

I use it for chopped liver -- I grind the cooked liver, the hard boiled egg, and the raw onion all together. Makes it a breeze.

I have also used it for gefilte fish and chicken patties (with leftover cooked chicken), and just last year I tried it, with great success, for making latkes, for which I like the potatoes ground, not shredded like hashbrowns. So now it gets the job instead of the food processor. I cannot believe we used to grate all those potatoes and onions (and our knuckles) by hand.

Great thread! I've been wanting a grinder attachment for my KA ever since I saw how easy it was to chop hot peppers when my niece and I were making hot pepper jelly last summer and she used one.

Thanks, Lars. Now I've gotta go to youtube and check out the grater attachment in action! lol

Am I the only one who finds it slow and cumbersome? Yes, it works, but if I used it more than a few times a year I'd spring for a more professional level machine.

I will check out the grater attachment as well!

I wish Annie would jump in and tell us what she uses. IIRC she bought a meat grinder even though she has the KA attachment.
