favorite books?

I am putting together a basket of books for my DIL baby shower. Can you tell me some of your favortes that you enjoy reading to your children?

For a point of reference, my boys are 2 1/2 yrs and 9 mo. Here are some books that they like and I find easy to read.

I subscribed to the book of the month club for a while and picked out some good books that the boys really like. DH signed us up for a different club that was selling mainly Dr. Suess books and those didn't go over too well. In fact, most have never been read.

Depending upon what you want to spend, you can find suitable books at Wal-Mart or buy nicer ones at the bookstore. Just a word of caution my children have several nice expensive books, but the ones that they actually like me to read either have only 3 or 4 sentences to a page or rhyme or have sounds that you make like "moo", "buzz", etc. I know everyone likes to buy the really pretty books with all the nice pictures, but at this stage of life, my kids do best with the little 6" x 8" cardboard books or the others I've mentioned above.

I have slowly been working my way through that "50 Best Science-Fiction and Fantasy" list that i posted here a couple years ago (I've now read 41 of the 50), so not surprisingly, two of my 'best of 2015' are from that list: Ubik, Philip K Dick - in a world of telepaths and precognitives playing with your perceptions, what is real and what is not? The last page still leaves you wondering! The Stars My Destination, Alfred Bester - although written in the 50's, the story and ideas are as good today, in fact, Bester uses SF ideas that have now become standard in all SF. Bester described it as "Count of Monte Cristo" in space and it was a thrill ride to read. When I finished, all I could do was sit there, breathless, and say WOW. :) The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar: Living with a Tawny Owl, Martin Windrow - thanks to whomever mentioned this last year. I owned a parrot for 30 years, and this book captures all the charm, work and heartache of keeping a bird as a pet. Silently, and Very Fast, Catherynne Valente, a Locus-award winning novella about an artificial intelligence. The AI tells the story (although it takes a while to figure that out), from its first development as a house monitor program, through a multi-generational evolution with the original programmer's descendants, when the question still remains - is this a true intelligence or merely programmed responses, yet how does it differ from the learned responses of a human. Interspersed with several creation myths & fairy tales told from the perspective of the AI. Fascinating. Valente knows her stuff. Babel-17, Samuel Delany - I tried twice to read Delany's Dahlgren, which is on all of the 'best of' lists, but gave up and tried his earlier Hugo & Nebula winner, Babel-17, which uses the concept language drives perception. A page-turner that kept surprising me. I noticed that The Martian showed up multiple times above; I enjoyed it very much but found that the explication of all Watney's ingenious solutions eventually got tedious. And anyone at NASA can tell that the NASA center Weir talked to the most was JPL (just as with Tess Gerritsen's Gravity, you knew she did her research at Johnson Space Center)! Being at Headquarters (which every NASA center loves to hate), I found it amusing that in both novels HQ was portrayed as the villain/obstacle to overcome.

I've read, and loved, so many books, including The Metamorphosis. I've read and enjoyed Fyodor Dostoyevski and Louisa May Alcott, Stephen King and Edna Ferber, to name a few. My late husband had a large collection of sci-fi, which I read when he finished each book. Janie, it's nice to hear from another Heinlein fan. When I think of all time favorites, two come to mind. One I read when I was a child, Miss Hickory, by C.S.Bailey, and one about a child, Ray Bradbury's loosely autobiographical Dandelion Wine, specifically the chapter about the grandmother's kitchen. The latter is the book I've re-read most often, because it reminds me of my own beloved grandparents.

The Bobbsey Twins, Little Women, Little House on the Prairie. There was a school library book called Matilda, about a black cat. It was written as if Matilda were telling the story of her life as a stray, describing her new family, her new kittens, and the little boy with a new puppy. I checked out and re-read that book so many times during the school year when I was in 2nd grade! One day a few weeks after school let out for the summer, the school librarian showed up at our door. She told my Mom that I'd read that same book so many time that only a few other people had a chance to read it. I was feeling a little guilty until she reached into her bag an pulled the book out and handed it to me. She said they had made a book order right before the end of the year, and she'd ordered another copy of Matilda for the library. They were pulling the older books and donating them or selling them to make room for new books, so she paid the 15 cents for the old copy and gave it to me. I still have it and have read it to our grandkids. It was my first chapter book, too!!

This is difficult to narrow down. Here goes: Book: "To Kill a Mockingbird". I read it at least once a year. Song: "Till There Was You" , Beatles. DH and I used to sing it to our babies. He would play it on the guitar and we would both sing. Maybe that's why they went to sleep so quickly-to escape our singing! Movie: Dr. Zhivago. On a snowy night DH and I went to see the movie and were only a handful of those who braved the storm to see it. It was in an old theater with the red velvet drapes around the screen. Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. This was my favorite as a kid, DH's favorite, and is all 3 of our kids' favorite. It's a true classic.

Anything by Richard Scarry. Make sure it's really a Richard Scarry, because his estates has "syndicated" his characters. If the book says "Things That Go BY Richard Scarry" then it's a true Richard Scarry. If it says "Richard Scarry's Goodnight Book" Than it's NOT a real Richard Scarry.

ANYTHING by Rosemary Wells, especially any Max and Ruby books - "Max's Dragon Shirt", "Max Cleans Up", "Max and Ruby's First Greek Myth", "Max's Chocolate Chicken", "Bunny Cakes", "Bunny Money". She is mine and my youngest DS' favorite author.

OH, and you HAVE to include "Read To Your Bunny" by Rosemary Wells. It is the basis for the "read 20 minutes a day" movement. It's the sweetest book with the sweetest pictures, I tear up every time I read it to my sons.

Anything by Margaret Wise Brown (She wrote "Goodnight Moon"). My kids especially like "The Noisy Book"

Look for picture books that have won the Caldecotte Medal or won honorable mention. They are the "best of the best" from each year. "The Snowy Day" by Ezra Jack Keats is a good one.

"Pat The Bunny" is also a favorite in our house.

I just love GOOD children's books. There are WAY too many children's books published these days and so many are just pulp, but there are some really good authors still at work.
