Do I sand between the two top coats of paint?

I did all the patching and prep work and primed the old bathroom--twice!--with appropriate wait times (thank you Faron for all your help!)

I just finished applying the first full coat of semi-gloss paint and am letting it dry thoroughy.

Do I need to sand or wet sand this before I apply the second full coat of paint?

I couldn't find the exact answer when I used the search feature on this site, when I read the paint can label, went to ehow and ask.com, so (sigh) I'm asking here.

Thanks for the input--I keep telling myself there's not such thing as a dumb question if you really, really don't know the answer and don't wanna make a guess! LOLAM !

I'd cross post in the paint forum, I'm sure someone there has the answer and reason for it! I've never had the luxury of paining a room that doesn't need several rounds of spackeling and sanding, so I'm always stuck priming and putting on 2 coats. Since it's already white, I would be tempted to do a very, very light sanding with fine sandpaper to take the sheen off a bit and follow with 2 light coats of paint. It may be in my head, but I feel like two thinner coats cover better than one thick coat. I'm absolutely not any type of expert, so that may be the exact opposite of what you should do. But maybe it will stimulate some discussion.

You may have to let it dry for a bit longer. I wouldn't worry about sanding between coats unless the surface is rough though. The paint should stick to itself just fine unless you waited several weeks between coats.

Thanks- I'll pick up a few and play with them a bit. My next batch of door backs turned out pretty well, maybe I wasn't back brushing hard enough on the other doors, or went too light with the foam roller to begin with which does leave those darn bubbles. I think I was just so nervous working on a real set of doors that I might have been too tentative. We really want this to look good and last- I don't like doing things half-way. I appreciate your help!

What does the manufacturer of the stain your are using recommend? Minwax, for example, does not recommend standing between coats of stain, at least for oil based stains. With most stains a fair amount of the pigments sit on the surface of the wood. When you sand, you remove the pigments. Others have suggested steel wool but I'll say it's unnecessary for oil based stains. You do need to sand between coats of varnish. Unlike shellac and lacquer, subsequent coats of varnish do not dissolve the previous coat and need to physically bond to the previous coat. A bit of light sanding creating minute scratches that improve adhesion. Sanding also removes small imperfections. Just make sure you use a tack rag after sanding. I'm not a big fan of steel or synthetic wool. With open pore woods like oak, bits of the wood can get caught in the pores. I prefer to use very fine wet/dry sandpaper between coats of varnish. I find it gives me better control and a smoother finish. I typically start with 320 between the first and second coats, 400 between two and three, 600 between three and four. You've shown intelligence by asking the "dumb" (they're never dumb!!) questions! The world of painting isn't rocket-science, but people can really louse things up with bad or outdated advice!

Case in point:
On another forum I read...a guy had painted Ralph-Lauren's River-Rock on his cabinets, and was wondering why they didn't clean-up very well!!! Uffda....

Thanks for the compliment, Faron! I'm glad there was an easy answer on the forum, because I sure couldn't find one when I searched!

The bathroom is done! I finished it today! Tomorrow, I'll re-hang the towel racks and the shower curtain and put up the outlet covers and switchplate. Two more days, and we'll be able to take a shower in there!'

I decided to go with white instead of a beachy water color or a light pebbly color --but of course, I had to spend some time priming over those because I painted big ol' swatches of those on the walls to see what it would look like. It's a small bathroom and those colors made it look smaller and darker. White, with accents of that beachy water color (hey, I have a quart of it and cannot use it in my classroom!) is--to quote baby bear--"just right!"

Glad the email works. Cyberspace is such a mystery to me, but I do love it!

Thanks for the input about waiting a month to tighten the switchplate and outlet covers. As for pictures, no promises, but maybe!
