My hair is falling out in hand-fulls!

I am really worried about my sudden loss of hair. I have a 5 month old baby and about 2 months ago I started loosing alot of my hair. I heard that that is common at three month post-baby, but I am STILL loosing by the brush-fulls. I dont know what to do, and wondered if anyone can reccomend a suppliment or scalp treatment or ANYTHING that will help with my hair loss. It so bad that I can see my scalp. I am not covered by health ins. at the moment (Im awaiting approval fro Blue cross) but I will go to the Dr. when I am covered for it. But untill then, I would so appriciate any advise you mom's may have.

Supplementing iron will help some and it is good for the baby too if you nurse (both my obgyn and pediatrician recommended that I continue to supplement iron as I did during the pregnancy only a lower dose).

The hair loss is normal though because during the pregnancy and a little while after giving birth you don't lose any hair - it just gets thicker - so now it goes back to normal.

Unfortunately, you just have to sit through it. I am going through the same thing and have developed a receding hair-line like my brother!!! I wear a lot of hats, scarfs, and have developed funky hair-dos to hide how much I have lost.... and I am already seeing baby-hair grow in. I am beginning to think this is why many neo-moms cut their hair short!!!

Iron is a good tip, although neither me nor my sister have really seen any difference.

I like a lot of your contract points bevangel. When we built our garage in 2003, we hired a framer who was also a friend. He and his helper didn't show up the first day, or the second, or the third. Dh is the son of a carpenter/builder and knows how to do the work, but he has had back surgery and shouldn't be doing it. But on the 3rd day, he got antsy and we had 3 walls up before the framer finally showed up about 3pm and they put up the 4th wall. The next day they started putting up trusses and dh went to his real job. That night, he was looking at the work done and saw that the trusses weren't set on the same marks on each side. The helper must have either been measuring from a different starting point or he was using the metric side of the tape. Anyway, dh spent that evening moving one side so it lined up with the other side and he let the framer know about it so they would do the rest right. The next day, no framer. The next day they showed up at 4pm. and only got a couple of trusses set. The next day they finished the trusses and then we didn't see them again for 3 days. Then they started putting up the plywood subsiding and decking. After they finished that, we didn't see them again for a week. During that week, it rained and the plywood warped. The next time they showed up, they started putting siding over the warped plywood. I stopped them and told them the warped siding had to be replaced first. They said they would so I left them to it. When dh came home that night, he found that they had replaced a couple of the lower pieces of plywood and sided over the rest. And it was really wavy. Dh called him, told him to come get a check and not come back. I roofed most of the garage by myself and dh and I replaced the warped plywood and finished the Hardi-plank siding. The plumber left his assistant to put in the gas line and water heater. He did fine with the line but he installed the water heater with the controls facing the wall and in a cabinet with no way to reach them. Dh had to redo that. The concrete contractor and the electrician were both terrific, so it wasn't like every sub was a problem, but the framer caused enough grief to make up for all of them. That was at a time when building was still good and even getting bids for a small job was hard. Our biggest mistake was hiring a friend, who used our friendship and put us last while he ran off to work on other jobs. We aren't friends any more. A contract from our end and not just their end would have made a big difference.

It's normal. Pregnancy affects hair growth cycles compared to normal so that by term, a woman has a lot more hairs on her head than usual. There is less general 'shedding' which normally would have occurred for those prior months. After giving birth it's like all that lost time is made up in that department. It can take months, generally 'sometime' in the first year you should begin to feel your body has pretty much returned to its pre-pregnancy state. If you notice the effects seem to be more extreme than 'normal' or if you are concerned, ask your doctor or pediatrician about it. Women in the post partum year can experience thyroid problems, or other issues which can be associated with hair loss problems.

I like Linda's suggestion. I did something similar a few years ago. I wanted a very Spanish Colonial lamp, but everything I found looked too new, too cute, too generic, or was too large for the space I needed. Still searching, I walked into an antique store in Old Town Albuquerque and fell in love with an antique chalkware santo (statue of a saint). The owner suggested a lamp place to take it to. There, they created the perfect base for the statue and attached it with museum putty, so that it wouldn't be ruined by glue. The post curves around my statue and I was able to pick the perfect shade for it. I love it and always get complimented on it. It's the perfect size, one-of-a-kind, beautiful, old, and adds so much character to my room. You might be able to find a great piece of pottery in the right color and have it attached as mine was. I so appreciate everyone's comments. I went last week and got multiple chips of the same colors, taped them together (so my sample spot is a whopping 4" long instead of 1x1, but still, every little bit helps). Jagl, that Maison Blanche color is really lovely, and so is China Doll, which is quite close to it. But in the end I'm guessing we'll do Moderate White, which is a white with lots of tan in it. Marys1000, thanks for the tip about that brochure full of off-whites -- that's how I found the Moderate White. And I'm liking Sand for my kitchen and DR, so perhaps I'm close to making a decision. I think I'll live with it for a few days. Randita, thanks for the help with the finishes! I've heard good things about the Cashmere paint, but my boys (and husband!) are capable of marking up walls in places where you wouldn't think any marks would get, so I should probably go with eggshell for the bedroom. Much appreciated. You guys are great. Thanks for the input and the pics. I'll post again when I finally make my mind up!

Thanks proserpina! Maybe I should cut my hair... Im going to start looking into shorter hair-styles... Im just so not a short-hair-person! But with how thin it is now, I NEVER wear it down (always have it up in a clip or pony-tail holder although I bunch it up in the holder. Even a pony tail looks too thin to wear!)
Im glad you see baby hair coming in. I hope mine starts to! I will try to get more iron.

Okay, so I must say I have experienced exactly what you are going through. Yes, I lost lots and LOTS of hair during and after my pregnancy. My baby is 13 months old now and my hair is still growing back. I am having to buy a whole bunch of head bands to hold back the growing hair. Without these headbands, I look like Albert Einstein!

As far as scalp treatment goes, I highly recommend a product by Arbonne. It is called Thermal Fusion hair and scalp revitalizer. At first I didn't think this would work (being that I tried countless others). I tell you what.... IT WORKS!

The product is well worth it's price. It has and is still making a difference with my hair. It actually feels good on the scalp.

get your thyroid tested. Pregnancy can affect a lot of things and one of them is a change in thyroid function. If your thyroid gland slows down, the symptoms are hair loss, weight gain as well as dry skin and feeling cold all the time.
