Staining above your head

When using a thin exterior oil stain, any tips on staining above your head for something like soffits or porch ceilings? It tends to get very messy very fast with a brush and stain running down your arm.

I would use a roller, Rough Rider or a staining pad if the material is really thin. In the old days, Rough Riders were the best for really moving fast without the material landing all over your face. It's a red handled contraption with two sets of black bristles in rows so that you can use it to get in grooves and such. You can also screw it on to an extension pole. Why are you staining with an exterior oil anyway?

>Why are you staining with an exterior oil anyway?I have a log home and was matching what I did a few years back. Mold has been a problem, I have Jomaxed the house and just re-stainning problem areas where I was too agressive with the Jomax. So far it's been working fine. Why do you ask?

In the powder room, I have a black and white antique etching of a famous street in Germany. In the exercise bath, I have two antique maps. In a guest bath, two pieces purchased at Pier 1 many years ago - silver frames, triple matted with small silver medallions hanging from ribbon. Second guest bath, a stained glass window. Master bath, an original pastel of trees and a lake. These things would look good in any room in our home. I don't restrict original art from the bathrooms. We have good fans in the bathrooms and have not had any problems with humidity over the years.

A backsplash is always going to get dirty. There is no way around that. You'll have to occasionally clean it. And unless it is a really forgiving non-porous surface (glass, stainless steel, some types of well-sealed granite), it'll take some work. Any type of grout is going to be painful to clean no matter what. They make less-porous grout (e.g. epoxy based grout, and polyurethane grout), but even those aren't necessarily a panacea. You could try something like Viper Venom Grout Cleaner. It'll cut through the dirt quite effectively. But it's some pretty aggressive chemical. Make sure you use appropriate personal protective equipment. And absolutely make sure you test it on another tile before. It definitely has the potential of damaging tile or some natural stones. When you are done, seal the surface. But don't expect miracles. Sealing isn't going to prevent discoloration. It'll simply make it easier to clean in the future, as it seals the pores and makes it less likely for grime to get into the tile/stone. Or you could live with the discoloration and consider it a side-effect of picking a natural stone in your kitchen.

Actually, although galvanized nails might not "rust," the zinc in galvanized nails reacts chemically with cedar and can cause staining. I have always used stainless nails and had no problems, but these are expensive and people often skimp and go with galvanized. For nails that are already installed, there is no fix short of replacement. I'd try to live with your situation, and wouldn't bother to replace them...unless the installer used ordinary nails, in which case, the stains will be very significant.

Not a pro and hopefully one will answer. In the meantime, you can find guidelines like these by Googling. However I would add that since everyone's island size, pendant size, ceiling height, personal height and sightlines vary, I would use the balloon trick before you have something installed: blow up balloons to the approximate size of your fixture(s). Hang them on strings according to the advice you find, and stand in different spots to see how they feel. Do they block your view? Seem like they would shine in your eyes? Hit your head? (yikes!) How do they look from across the room or wherever you'll typically be looking toward the island? etc etc. Then adjust the strings to see how they look and feel at different heights. Here's my example when I was hanging a fixture with 3 globes, all of which could be hung at different heights. Did my mockup then moved the table under it and had a couple family meals, adjusting the heights as necessary. (DS is 6'6" so I made sure he helped with the test run, so he won't be blinded at dinner time.)

I can't find anything on Rough Rider/paint brush. Do you have a link? The materal is mostly T&G pine.

Yeah, for a second there I was worried that the Rough Riders were gone. I asked why you were using an oil stain because for most applications, those aren't used anymore. But, for a log home, that is really the only option. If the product you are using is really loose bodied, you may be able to run it through a garden sprayer and then just back brush it....this is just something to consider. Spraying over your head may also be messy.
