Order of operations... painting bathroom with cracked paint/mud

I'm painting a bathroom and currently some areas of the paint and spackle are cracking and lifting up. I've chipped off a bit the spackle, so nothing is currently loose or lifting and wallboard is exposed in some areas.

Should I prime first, then spackle, then prime then paint?

Or just spackle, prime and paint?

What are my chances of having my new paint job stay crack-free?

You will want to remove as much as possible, sand the chipped areas and then prime. You want to give your patching compound the best surface to bite onto and that would be a clean primed surface. If it will crack again really depends on the underlying condition for why it cracked in the first place. If it's plaster, sometimes plaster just cracks again and again because of the movement behind the plaster.

No offense...but that is one "less than ideal wall"!!

I know you mentioned "wallboard"/drywall, but it kinda looks like maybe plaster, as Paintguy mentions?!
* What's the age of this bath/wall?
* IF it's plaster...you may have a battle on your hands!
* Have there been water-leaks behind or on those walls?
* Is there a good bath-fan?
* The walls will have to be washed b4 any new coating goes on the wall.

Paintguy...is this maybe a case for Gardz??
(even if it's plaster...)
THEN the spackling/repairs/possible re-skimming?

You don't have to put 'mud' over drywall before painting. If you want a texture on the walls you do, but not if you want flat walls. You need to float out the area where the paper is torn off or you will be able to see the edges after you paint. You don't necessarily need to tape over the torn edges. You should make sure there are no fuzzy pieces of paper sticking up, then you can just take drywall "topper" (a light-weight joint compound) and a large drywall knife and float the wall flat. Sand lightly and repeat. You may want to put a good primer down before you paint to make sure the paint looks the same all over the wall. Good luck! Renee

In the master bedroom, I have beige marble saturnia. I understand what you are saying, but I really don't think a clear/blueish translucent glass in the shower, and then the 2nd backsplash I linked for the wall behind the vanity (not the electric blue one) wouldn't work with the beige porcelain. I mean the beige color is a neutral color, I will then have expresso as the vanity color, similar glass to the subway tile glass on the vanity top and the vessel bowls, so not sure why the beige porcleain wouldnt work? It would blend well with the master bedroom floor and I would imagine it would just provide a neutral color. I think if I go with a pure gray it will be too dark and dreary. I just hope whatever floor I pick that the contractor does it with 1/8" grout lines with a grout color that matches very well. I hope the contractor doesnt give me a hard time about the 1/8" grout lines and a hard time when I ask for it to be a diagonal layout. I am going to do 18"x18". To Tina, I agree, I dont think a border will be necessary in the shower, I just didnt know if it was "too much" glass all in one area and needed to be broken up. But I looked online and many subway glass showers have no border. In terms of metal finish, you mean like on the vanity and shower? Oh, no, faron79! I didn't take anything as arrogance, believe me. I was hoping to hear from the paint pros, of which you are one. I truly do know that it would be the best idea to get a fan installed, but we just can't do it now. Everything costs more in CA so I'm thinking that estimate could easily be doubled, and maybe more. Paintguy--I'll look for Plus 3-- I'm glad to know about that. I just noticed today that other than a small area in the bath/shower tub, the mildew and slight cracking is in the ceiling paint, which we didn't apply; (we've been in this house 13 years.) I'm thinking that because of that I'll use the Zinsser on the ceiling but maybe BM on the walls, since the color choices for Z are terribly limited. I have to kick my dd out of her bathroom for the weekend and really get in there with the sander and get the prep done. Wish me luck!

Help! Bathroom paint WAY too dark!

I looked at the paint this morning and it still seems dark although I know the lighting will help. The darker color will look great with all the black tile accents and art. I am not found of that orange fake oak vanity and mirror, you know? But maybe the darker color will de-emphasize the mirror rather than higlight it. I have to paint more tonight. Thank goodness I have 2 baths in this house. The 2nd one is even smaller than this one and a dark paint in that room would be much worse. That one stays white. So I will think on this 1st bath to see if I can stand the dark shade (which is only this dark here). Thanks for the suggestions. I will be taking my BM paint fan deck with me everywhere now. LOL. The wall is just drywall from the 70's. For some reason there is quite of bit of mud rubbed all over this section of wall. The parts I have chipped off don't seem to be covering anything but plain drywall. I've lived with plaster walls before and that's not something I'd want to tackle.

The bathroom fan makes noise. Beyond that I think it does nothing. It will hold a small piece of toilet paper up on one side, but it will spit it off on the other side. The problem areas are all near the ceiling, so they get a good bit of steam, but no leaking water.

I thought about Gardz, since I already have some in my collection (although it might be too lumpy at this point, since its a couple of years old). I'm not looking forward to the fumes in that small space, with that great fan.

Yes, the walls will need a good scrubbing, and then I think hairspray may be banned from the room.

You could really use the Gardz instead of the primer before you do your patching. If it's lumpy, strain it through a paint strainer or some old nylons.
