The problem is how will you know? People name kids after people all the time. For instance a friend is named Daniel Boone. I wouldn't want it, but it's an honorable name. His best friend growing up was named Mickey Mouse. Granted, they didn't have to call him Mickey, but I think his parents were tacky. The other day someone's kid didn't like the name Jamie. I like that name. Nothing wrong with it. But some people just don't like their name and it's their privilege to change it. I do draw the line at the "Rainbow Glistening" and the like. I often go yer mother musta hated you for some but some think they're "unique". These creative spelling of a more common name. One friend is named Jayson. But after a bit I went, there's far worse. That said, I'm not sure how I'd like to be named after a fishing hole, or an airplane, a weeping tree or a piece of pavement, (or was it a bridge to nowhere?) like one unnamed moron named her kids. Sheesh. Fortunately kids these days are so used to being named after cars, weather effects, body parts, states where they were conceived or otherwise that it's not as big a thing with them anymore.

And then comes the creative pronunciation of names. I still like when Tony DOR'sett, after winning the Heisman decided he wanted to be called Anthony DorSETT'. Roger Stauback said to him, that's OK Tony, when I won the Heisman, I wanted to be called RoGER' StauBACH', but it never quite stuck! Best slam I heard in a long time!

I'm not so sure I like multiple middle names. Can't decide on 3 names? Need to have more for the kid? Now, as far as these adoptive hyphenated names... And Farrah should be b!tch-slapped for starting the Fawcett-Majors thing.

One of my favorite students was named Aprisis!

ZION, Ill. Â A school bus driver and amateur artist from the northern Chicago suburb of Zion has legally changed his name to "In God We Trust."

A Lake County circuit court judge approved Steve Kreuscher's name change petition on Friday.

Under the arrangement, the 57-year-old's first name was changed to "In God" while his last name was changed to "We Trust."

He says the new name symbolizes the help God gave him during tough times and says he can't wait to begin signing his artwork with the new moniker.

Working as a middle school cafeteria cashier, I saw and heard all sorts of unusual names. Most, I've forgotten, but I will never forget the sweet little girl I called Azz-A-lea (like the flower bush) for almost a year before her friend said her name was pronounced AzzaLEE-A.

Oh, now i get April 6! That mama really worked her brain on that one!

One of my favorite classes of 7th graders contained 4 Johns, Lee Kelley and Kellie Lee, plus Ferdinand Fulton and Francis Ferguson.
Fortunately for all of us, they were delightful kids.

My friend Cheryl is a teacher in Irving, TX and she worked with a woman whose first name was Anita who married a guy with the last name of Dick. I thought she was pulling my leg until I went to the school myself to see her name on the wall outside her door. I think I would have kept my maiden name!

A family who's last name was Hocks, named their girl Holly.

All through school and until I was newly married, I went by Doris Evelyn, then I got a copy of my birth certificate, and found out i was Dora Eva, obviously my Mom & Dad didn't communicate well. LOL

My daughter's married name is Halley. When she was in her late teens I was looking into genealogy and found an old family name I thought was so pretty. Mahallie. I told her aren't you glad I didn't know about that name when you were born. Your name now would be Mahallie Halley. Sounds Hawaiian. LOL Dottie

I read somewhere recently where this mom was vexed that someone had pronounced her child's name wrong. It's spelled La-A.

I used to work with a lady named Tequila & one named Precious. Our marketing director couldn't remember Tequila's name & kept calling her Margarita.

And why do people think it's a good idea to put La, L', Da, or D' on a name to make it different? LaRhonda, L'Shannon, D'Juan, etc.

I heard on some tv news show once, of a woman naming her daughter Placenta, because she thought it sounded pretty.

My grandma used to cut articles with odd names out of newspapers and magazines. She kept the clippings in a tin box and brought it out once in a while to entertain us. She'd have loved this post :-)

In a former life, I had to review medical records...saw some really odd/strange names and combination of names...one in particular made me feel really bad for the child. The family name was common in our area..Burger...no problem with that eh? But, they named their little girl Crystal, alas...Crystal Burger.. I can still hear the cruel childhood jokes she would have to endure! "Want pickle on that burger", cheese and mayo only please" or "no onion please" Don't leave your children open for unnecessary bullying!

A neighbor's son named his kids Katherine, Nathanial, and Patrick...at first blush, this seems fine. But...they call them Kat, Nat and Pat...that's a bit much as far as I'm concerned.

Names with particular meanings have been around for centuries.
Two examples that come to mind are in the Bible.
1. In 1 Samuel the Ark of the Lord had been captured. As the daughter-in-law of Eli, the priest, was dying, she named her new born,"Ichabod", meaning "the glory has departed."

2. In the first chapter of the book of Ruth, Naomi's husband and sons have sickened and died.
Her boys were named, "Mahlon", meaning 'invalid', and "Chilion", meaning 'pining'.
